HOW TO GET TO POMPEII / CIRCUMVESUVIANA NAPOLI / ITALIAN TRAIN TRIP REPORT

- Hello and welcome to another video in my 'How to...' series, a special one today!
We will be making the trip to the ancient city of Pompeii aboard with the Circumvesuviana narrow gauge railway. These 6 commuter/ local lines serve the communities to the East of Naples/ Napoli around the Mount Vesuvius area, as the name suggests.
Now this may not be a very well looked after network, with heavily graffiti'd trains, but it's cheap and it gets you there. Enjoy the trip; we'll be having a quick look around the ruins of Pompeii in the second half of the video!

Visited Naples this summer, and had a lot of fun, but true that Circumvesuviana was not the part of the "fun".
Few advices: pickpocketing is said to be pretty common in these trains, so keep your wallet, mobile and backpack in a safe place and try avoid standing by the doors.
It might also worth hopping on the train from Porta Nolana instead of Garibaldi, as you have a much higher chance of getting a comfy place there -- most people board the train at Garibaldi.
Overall Circumvesuviana was not a pleasant experience, but not too bad either -- I expected it to be somewhat worse. Just use common sense, prepare for the heat, and you won't have any problems.
There's also a tourist train with the new A/C trainsets -- Campania express -- which is less packed, more comfy, faster, only stopping at the main tourist sites. It is significantly more expensive though.

I am Italian (precisely from scafati, the next stop after Pompeii) and honestly I find the "circumvesuviana" line (which is only called "vesuviana" here) very convenient. It's brilliant because it connects important cities at a low cost, certainly some trains are not that great, but slowly they are all being modernized. as you said in the video the new train is more comfortable, and since it has been very successful, others are doing it as well. better for us Neapolitans!

When my GF, Paola, and I visited Pompeii ruins in Spring 2003 we took the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompei Santuario (that at the end of the video) and as I remember the best part of the train trip was coming out of the station walking through a small green path under the shade of some passionfruit plants finding a citrus vendor right at the end of the trail and then buying a large cedar fruit. 💞 Dedicated to Her

Yes, my wife and I took this train about 5 times, 4 years ago ( 2018) from Naples to Meta, where we were staying. Absolutely loved the train. The whole working class Italian vibe. The graffiti was great, should do it to more trains every where!! Would do it a gain in a heart beat. Loved your film, took me right back!!

I actually think the graffiti looks amazing, and it’s world class in terms of its execution. The colors, the lines, the taking some of it from 2-D to 3-D are just beautiful to the eye street art is not less than what you find the museum.

I took trainitalia to get to pompei and only walked 10 minutes to get to an alternate entrance instead of the main one. It was a nice walk through the city of pompei.

I take Vesuviana every day to go to school, that is after the second Pompei stop you showed, as this is the 4th year I take it regularly, i can say it's a magic experience, and pretty weird seeing it in a CZcams video
I used this service back in February when I visited Sorrento and Pompeii. The 2 times I used it we must have been lucky and got one of the newer trains. These older ones look terrible.

Yeah loved it, and enjoyed a couple of days out in Pompeii on holiday. Sorrento is worth a visit at the end of the line too. A beer by the pool, mm, the trains can be a little rough but good value.

Yes, Pompeii is incredible and well worth the visit. On my guided tour we got to see the brothels 😆 not the Amphitheatre. Your train trip wasn't bad although is very good value for money if on a budget 🇬🇧

In the summer of 2006 we arrived in Naples by train and then went by taxi to the port to catch a ferry to Sorento. From Sorento we rode the Cirumvesuviana to Ponpeii and Herculaneum .... They look like the same trains, though never as crowded.

Thanks for making the video. I would love to go to Pompei. We have been to Ostia Antica near Roma a few years ago, also a great 200 year old antique site that has been uncovered from 1810 on. You can see huge mosaics (even to be seen with Google maps since some mosaics are 18 by 12 metres, just look it up) and a bar that looks as if the Roman's just left 10 years ago. It has the same terrible train to it, which is a pity.
Definitely make time to go, it's better than the stuff in Rome imo. But yeah, terrible trains 🤣
These Circumvesuviana trains are no regular trains but light rail, or metro, or even trams, running on 'Italian metre' gauge. Why would they have A/C or toilets? Their main merit is that they are cheap.

The worst part, besides being uncomfortable, is that it causes the coronavirus easily. No safety distance. Neither properly worn masks. Neither hydroalcoholic gel. Neither appropriate hygiene measures. Well.

The fast Circumvesuviana trains are ok. It is also possible to travel on regional Trenitalia trains to Pompeii FS. as you mentioned. Those trains, when I used, were fine, all fit with A/C.

Imagine the absolute chaos that were happening on that August day in AD 79. Even I can't imagine it.
Ah yes, the Circumvesuviana! Was fortunate enough to experience it several times in June 2019. Words don't do this train justice...it is NOT for the faint of heart! My first ride was this exact route. Not only did the train not arrive on time, it wasn't even displayed on the platform information board until 20 minutes after its scheduled arrival, and even then it showed the original scheduled time. It finally arrived 35 minutes late and a crush of people got on. It was hard to believe it was so late as Porta Nolana can't be more than 300m from Garibaldi! During that 35 minutes, several trains rolled by the platform without stopping or stopped and never opened their doors. One stopped and opened its doors but had no interior lights on and no one got on. Even for southern Italy it seemed disorganized and poorly run. I later took it down to Meta then to and from Sorrento a few days later. Simply put, the train is horrifically overcrowded, hot, and uncomfortable...but for less than €3 it's still a pretty great deal. Watch for pickpockets and enjoy the experience!

Seeing the gritty part of Naples/Pompeii on the Circumvesuvianna was actually part of the "fun" we had. Long, hot ride with many stops. We were in the thick of things, not glamour and luxury. Roma musicians played a beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on part of the train ride.

yes I melted away on that train 3 years ago went down to Sorrento. There are other trains too though. It’s called Campania Express, 10 times more expensive than CV but there is A.C. on them. Pompeii is unbelievable. I would definitely go back.
Hopefully the new CV trains will improve the service 😊

If you like Pompeii then check out Herculaneum (Ercalano Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana). It’s smaller than Pompeii but was the more prosperous of the two towns. Most of the artefacts from these sites are at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (Museo station metro line 1 or Cavour station line 2).

We took this train from Sorrento to Pompeii in October 2019. Great fun - as you say, not the most comfortable train in the universe but it didn't have need to be. I don't think they are graffitied, you know - I think it's decoration made to look like graffiti (probably in the hope that nobody then would).
I'm pretty sure it's graffiti over more grafitti 😂
Fantastic network hampered by poor management and sporadic investment. Its got real charm and could be a fantastic regional metro. Hopefully the new owners and Stadler train sets will really help turn the experience around!

I would recommend two other sites. Herculaneum is another Roman town near Pompeii with amazing well preserved buildings destroyed by Vesuvius.
Also recommend a trip to Ostia Antica near Rome. Very similar trip on a commuter rail line that's just as awful with rusting graffitid cars and no AC. The town was Rome's ancient port but due to the harbor silting up now lies some distance away from the sea. It was abandoned and the buildings are extremely well preserved. Must see in my opinion.

@@NonstopEurotrip if you do go back to Rome, head to the Piramide station in the city. That’s where the Ostia trains leave from. Be sure to not confuse the two Ostia stations - Ostia Lido is the new town. The one you want is Ostia Antica. It’s the ancient port of Rome and it’s as well preserved as Pompeii, but somehow seems to avoid the large tourist crowds. The entrance to Ostia is near the station. My favourite area there is the bar which, as someone said earlier in the comments, looks as if it could have just been vacated by the Romans a few years ago. Very easy to imagine a place of drunken revelry! Another site you should visit is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa) which is in the foothills above Rome. You have to get a bus to Tivoli, but it’s totally worth it for the peace and quiet and the nature. Happy travels.

Hello, my wife and I are visiting Ercolano/Pompeii in a couple months. Does the Circumvesuviana train stop at all the stops or will it randomly pass up some? I was told that some trains passed right by the Ercolano Scavi without stopping. Is that true?
Honestly not sure, you'll have to check the timetables!
Used it several times to get to Sorento. 1. It’s just a local commuter service so it’s not going to have all the bells and whistles. After all what do you expect for €2. 2. They are slowly extending and upgrading the metro and the other transport services but this is one of the most economically depressed areas in Italy so don’t expect miracles. 3. The graffiti is really annoying but it’s pretty much a national pastime and has been since Roman Centurion’s left their marks 2000 years ago. 4. It’s got better views and it’s quicker than the road.

You could just use the Metro Line 2, which is much more comfortable and welcoming, I recommend it with all my heart, it is 100 times better than the Circumvesuviana

Hello going to boscoreale in july, many of the sites i read said you can only buy a ticket for the vesuviana in cash at newsstands or the office box, but in your video you said we can also buy it online. Could you say a website id be greatful

Rode the Circumvesuviana a few times in the last week (staying at a hotel just outside Castellammare)
Have to say it's . . . Not terrible. Not good, but not terrible. It's slow, bumpy (feels like the seats are bolted directly to the bogies) and can be quite overcrowded - I would suggest taking precautions (watching your luggage, keeping money and valuables in zipped/interior pockets . . . The usual tourist precautions)
But the services are frequent, travel times aren't atrocious and it's pretty inexpensive. It was a bit of a shock coming off a splendidly clean, comfortable & airconditioned .italo AGV to board one of these trains but . . . Whilst its not great it gets the job done.
They've also clearly upped their cleaning regime since you filmed. Alot of trains are still covered in graffiti but I was on several that had none at all!
My biggest complaint is that since Covid they've permanently closed 'Pozzanno' Station, which would've been a 6 minute walk from my hotel. Instead I had to either walk for 30 mins or get a fairly pricey taxi into Castellammare de Stabia to catch the train.
I will say I did have issues in this part of Italy personally. Mostly with how complicated booking things had to be. Vesuvius was particularly irritating. You can only book tickets through one specific website, this is not well advertised and they charge you €12 each to go to the summit (and on the day we tried the mountain was 'fully booked' apparently!). As someone from a mountainous country where (if you're not using a guide) the mountains are free, I found that pretty irritating.

it's good you got to visit the ancient city of pomepeii wonder what it would have been like before it was destroyed people wearing robes market stalls but also the coliseum gladiators fighting with each other or with a dangerous animal to the death infront of a leader or king and an audience and empires etc

Two things: 1) Pompei is amazing, but Herculaneum (Ercolano) is smaller but better preserved and also deserves a visit 2) Next time you go to Naples, if you want to try some more terrible local trains, look into the Cumana and the Circumflegrea ;-)

Ercolano is just magic. It is only a small site, so very easy to get around. It's very well preserved. The bit at the end though, with all the skeletons, very confronting...

@@ash9x9 I wouldn't go to Pompeii if you were short on time. We were there for a half day and barely saw anything! Herculaneum can be done in a couple of hours - you can see the whole site - it is an easy walk around and it is very well preserved. It is only a short walk from the train station as well.

I taked vesuviana every day for go to school.... It's the worst railway in Italy, and your was a typical ride of Summer. And Napoli Piazza Garibaldi is the best station of Circumvesuviana, the station of my town (S. Agnello) sucks:there aren't any controls and there is 1 platform only. There aren't any shops, it's not accessible for use Wheelchair and ticket office is closed some times, so you can't buy tickets. Sorrento station is better, there are shop always open, tickets office is open, there are controls and there is a small lounge opened to everyone.
It's certainly a unique transport system 🤣

Buy from station
It's terrible, but it's also affordable and goes to quite a lot of places. There's also quite some ghost stations further down this line. As a fan of railways, it's a nice time capsule to times far gone. In most countries this network would have long been replaced by buses, but thanks to low fares and using equipment for long, the system is well-used.
It's easy to talk shit about something, but if the train is full, then the service is a good deal (at least compared to the other offers, such as cars). My guess would be that there's a quite affordable year card.
Yeah it's definitely convenient. But I wouldn't want to take it every day!

I take the Circumvesuviana service regurarly
I can confirm that the service is terrible, so much so that a train was on fire yesterday on the Napoli/Poggiomarino (The green line).
Most trains are from the 70s (30 to be exact), 10 from the 90s and the new "Metrostar" rolling stock are 23.
There are orders to retire this trains, Hitachi has to build 40 new trains, but admistration issues delayed this trains by 18 month at the time of writing, moreover there are 25 revamped 70s trains, 12 already in service, other 13 will enter service soon (This new trains have AC at least...)
The situation is very critical, theoretically the trains are able to do 80km/h, but the speed is limited to 50km/h because of old signalling system.
So this line is very limited, service ends at 10p.m. (unaccetable for public transport), and if you ever have to take this service, factor in 20 minutes, because that's the median delay of the service, if you follow the timetables, this is still the consequence of the 2008 market crash, the company that is responsible of the service (EAV) was on the brink of collapse, and the public transport sector here in Naples has been abbandoned to itself for 10 years, only recently some has been done to improve the situation.
Hopefully the new trains will make the service much better! And yes I saw the train on fire the other day 🔥😳
Hope is low, track is outdated and even single track in some sections, no one oversees the security, not even on the trains, ticket offices in the station are always closed apart from Naples, Pompeii and Sorrento, and even then no one will never ask about tickets so many people don't even pay for the service.
I had to use it for 5 years to go to school, and actually studing about railways, and knowing how expensive they are to operate, I concluded that the service survives only thanks to public fundings from the State. The trains are only part of the problem unfortunatly. But I have to say that I was quite lucky, because I had taken just the train before to go to school. Last year I found myself in a similar accident. I was coming back from Rome, where my gf lives, I was getting home (I had to get off the train in Villa delle Ginestre, where Giacomo Leopardi's Neapolitan Villa is), and in Portici Bellavista there was a big explosion coming from the catenary, I think bad maintenance wrecked the trains engines, but it didn't catch on fire, just had to wait for another train, the blow was quite scary actually

The locals are well aware of the shittiness of it. It's such a pity, it could be a great way to move around Naples' metro area, but we're in Italy, if things are not disfunctional and pervaded by corruption and some mafia too we're not happy

@@Hastdupech8509 Trenitalia does some good regional services as well, for what i remember when i travelled with Trenitalia in Tuscany.
@@thealitaliaa7714 I use it to commute to Bologna, newer trains are good and were on time 90% of times. Trenitalia can be good, but the problems are still there, especially in the South. I'd love to say that it is a top company, but it's not, especially considering that Italy is one of the major first world countries and one would expect a quality service
I have took the train all the way to Sorento. Words cannot discribe my shocked seeing the train for the firsti time when it arrived at Garibaldi. However at the end of the journey u will arrive at a beautiful town n at that point u will forgot all the hardship

I’m from Naples and I know that the original circumvesuviana is completely a shit, but there’s also the Campania Express, which stops only three times and has got AC, numerated seats, so more comfort.

I disagree about the graffiti. I believe it gives the trains a unique and cultural aesthetic, very representative of the overall scene in Napoli City. I do agree though, that they should invest in the machinery, as any city/country should for the sake of advancement and quality of life. Nonetheless, I'm not a native, so my opinion is not of any real value.
