Crazy to think that the GSP we see in this fight - despite being only 21, far from his peak, and fighting WAY back in 2004 - is STILL, *already* good enough to hop in a Time Machine and compete with the best fighters of today.
His wrestling and BJJ were already elite, and hold up by today's standards. His top game, his timing on the double legs... he already had the foundation of the legendary takedown artist he'd soon become. But even his distance, speed, cardio, takedown defense... it's on par with many of the WWs of today.
And this was freaking 2004. Dude was destined to take over the sport.
Sidenote, holy shit Karo put on the fight of his career here. Like, little did he realize, he just kept it competitive and even caused threats to the future GOAT

Since GSP was champion for so long we just take for granted that he is phenomenal, but for those not aware of the context at the time, this was a huge step up in competition for GSP and he was not really expected to win as Karo Parisyan was a very talented rising prospect back then. This fight kind of derailed him of his illusions and he didn't really emerge as the great fighter we expected and I suggest this loss was the grain of sand in his confidence shoe that he could never really ignore. After all, if this was Georges' first fight, how much better could this kid become?

So good at such a young age, this level of competition was almost like being fed to the wolves for his 1st UFC fight. Fighters do not get this type of experienced fighter in their 1st fight anymore. Unless you were a champ in a different organization like a Michael Chandler, but he had 26 pro fights before he first fought in the UFC.

In that sense, his transition into MMA has demanded that he had to advance his skill set, and he shows just how well he has done that, GSP's strength and endurance is a formidable beast, all power to him, a great contest and Karo can walk away with his head held high.
