  • Fun fact, if you rearrange the letters of "Rwanda" you get "Wakanda" but with some extra letters missing and added.

    I bet if all things go according to plan, soon Rwanda will just change their name to "Wakanda." Welcome to the "tech and education hub" of Africa with a DARK past. My buddy Edmond guest stars to tell his story on how he survived the crazy 1994 mass killings. Oh and they have Gorillas here. So much to cover. Hope you enjoy this episode!

    Honestly, this is an extremely rare case where giving the president unlimited terms isn’t a completely terrible idea. But the problem is that he sets no real rules for succession. He has to set a precedent for future leaders of Rwanda so they can follow his example of how to use power and know when to step down. With those unlimited terms, it makes the government susceptible to corruption. Although the current president probably won't do much corruption, the next one could abuse his power.

    • @yanndylan2239
      @yanndylan2239 Před 4 lety +177

      @@lukedetering4490 and thats why the terms aren't actually unlimited. It's complicated so I'll try to explain it to the best of my abilities. Essentially, in Rwanda one term was seven years and you could only have 2 terms. Kagame was voted into power in 2003 and in 2010 was re-elected. He never intended to run again, however nearing the end of his second term there side scale demands from the citizens that he stays in power and runs for election again. However since the constitution did not allow this, votes on whether the constitution should be changed happened. The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of the constitution being changed so that he can run for office again. Try to follow along, this is where ot gets a bit complicated. The end result, was that the constitution was changed and he would be able to run for another seven year term, however his would be the last seven year term for any Rwandan president. After his current term ends, he will be able to run a final time for a 5 year term. So starting in 2031(?) There will be a new president and a new term system of a maxim of two 5 year terms will begin once Kagame steps down as president. I hope my explanation makes sense. And don't worry, Kagame himself knows that for the good of the country, there will have to be a new leader at some point and it's one of his goals that by the time he steps down and retire, there will be plenty of suitable candidates that will be able to step up and lead the country into the future.

This is, however, no reason to go spurring off my genuine compliments with your pre-existing prejudice. It is not my fault, nor is it my country's fault that no one wishes to associate themselves as the "Malaysia of Africa" or the "Indonesia of Africa", the two of which, should any African nation wish to model themselves after, is as good as giving up.
      Also, the reason why Rwanda's 1% Asian and White populace was mentioned in the nation's demographics is because "Asians" and "Whites" are races; Muslims are not, and I could not care less if they sit at 1% higher.

    I agree with what Edmund say. He said Rwanda had a complicated history. At the same time, every country also had a complicated history but together we hope for peace and prosperity everywhere

      Fairy C Rat u can’t have a comeback story when you were amazing from the start, which Botswana was, at least institutionally, it has a history of strong centralised democratic ethics since before colonisation.

    I have visited Rwanda several years ago, beautiful country, very clean, safe, air is great no pollution, food is tasty, people are very friendly, and I had great time, the only thing I had a problem with were local traders they would usually charge more or trying to cheat you for an item of lower value if they see you are foreigner, but that kind of stuff is normal in many countries. Overall I had great and fun experience there and will go back again, love Rwanda.

    • @ZarazXero
      @ZarazXero Před 4 lety +3

      I'm thrilled that you had a great time! Rwanda has worked incredibly hard to recover from it's past, and it's always so nice to hear when foreigners go there and visit. Oh, the traders will definitely do that haha! If you go back you'll find lots of improvements, Rwanda makes huge leaps year after year 😊👍🇷🇼🙏❤️

    Great video! One important thing you could have talked about is Lake Kivu being one of the only 3 exploding lakes in the world (and by far the largest). With a tremendous amount of methane stored under the lake, the gas has the potential of erupting all at once out and into lower lying air surrounding the lake, with the potential of suffocating anythingin the vicinity of the lake (a 2700km² lake mind you, and with 3 heavy population centers surrounding it, in one of the most densely populated regions of africa). It's also the source of a great deal of energy from methane extraction as you mentionned in the video :) Could also have mentionned Louside Mushikiwabo in the famous people list, a minister of foreign affairs, then secretary-general of the Organisation internationale de la francophonie.
    Anyway thanks for all this work, I'd been waiting for this video for a long time!
