    I'm 83, and have been on this path for about 40 years. No one is perfect, so I've been through that time when I took back dairy, got sick, and fat, and had to make the decision to go back to 100% plant based. I lost my mom to colon cancer and decided that I'd never eat anything that didn't grow from the ground. Thank you, Dr. Barnard for all this information, and to you, Chuck, for hosting the interviews.

    For arthritis he should try never to have more that one nightshade at a time. Nightshades are plants that include tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, capsicums and chilli peppers (tobacco is also a nightshade). I have found that having a meal which includes two or more of these can cause arthritis to flare - although I can have just a baked potato with beans and be fine or just a little canned tomato incorporated into a pasta sauce ; however that is just me - maybe try eliminating them altogether and then reintroducing slowly, one at a time to see what happens.

    Thanks for this service. Dr Barnard is a gem.
    We appreciate Dean Ornish’s contribution to our understanding about CVD issues, but why is Nathan Pritikin never mentioned? He was possibly the first to reverse heart disease when he was told repeatedly that reversal was impossible, and included exercise when advised not to because it would probably kill him. We also owe a lot of our knowledge to him and many owe increased life in years and health to him. He also funded his study himself because no one else would fund such “impossible” ideas. I find it sad that he is given little/no credit these days.

    • @gardenofeels6872
      @gardenofeels6872 Před 2 lety +1

      The reason Pritikin is rarely mentioned by vegans is because he developed two different types of cancer at a relatively young age on a low -fat vegan diet. He ended up killing himself because of the pain of the cancers. I would hardly call that a good example of great health on a vegan diet. He is the last person advocates of a low-fat vegan diet want to talk about.

    • @vc6601
      @vc6601 Před 2 lety +1

      @@gardenofeels6872 Yes, he did develop cancer, but as I understand it the cancer was due to exposure to certain chemicals during the war. None of the vegan doctors ever say that a healthy vegan diet will protect from all ills, just reduce the risk.

    • @citadelofwinds1564
      @citadelofwinds1564 Před 2 lety +1

      @@gardenofeels6872 , Pritikin did not develop the cancers because of a vegan diet, but despite it. I suspect the problem was that it wasn't a whole foods diet but relied heavily on processed foods. I tried the diet years ago and so many recipes contained canned this and canned that, so the diet was frankly nutritionally deficient - especially their extreme, ultra low calories version.
      Since then, it's been recognised that refined and processed foods are a problem whether people are omnivores, keto or vegan followers. So the key is to eat the majority of foods whole or minimally processed, and include enough fresh produce. If Pritikin was relying on too much processed foods, he wasn't getting enough of the protective factors from fruit and vegs. He was a pioneer, finding his way, and that means making mistakes. Later researchers and vegan proponents have learned from these mistakes, and these days the best sources urge people to minimise processed foods.

    • @gardenofeels6872
      @gardenofeels6872 Před 2 lety +1

      @@citadelofwinds1564 I never said Pritikin got cancer because of the vegan diet, but it surely did not protect him from cancer either. I remember seeing interviews he did and he claimed to eat a pretty much whole foods plant diet. He was especially fond of whole grains. But his main claim to fame was the miniscule amount of fat in the diet he recommended. Neither you nor I really know how much processed foods he ate as opposed to whole foods. We only have his words and his books. His recipes weren't necessarily what he was eating himself, but rather an attempt to make his diet easier to follow. All we can do is speculate.
      One thing I do know. Fat is a very important macro nutrient, and your immune system will ultimately fail with too little of it. That is one of the reasons for the high vegan failure rate.

    • @panes840
      @panes840 Před 2 lety

      @@gardenofeels6872 cancer is caused by multi environmental variables that can switch on or off a gene. Fat is important but it's not that important. An apple contains saturated fat so does a lettuce but the amounts are miniscule. You don't actually need very much even when keeping calorie density low. So by avoiding high calorie density foods you can get enough to ensure hormones function properly.

      Annie - what about taking a baby aspirin everyday to help prevent a brain clot - ? I had a coronary artery stent put in four months ago and I take Plavix in the morning and a baby aspirin in the evening to help prevent clots - I think it's a smart idea if we have a higher chance of getting clots. Also, you can stimulate Nitric Oxide in the blood to help keep the endothelial layer of blood vessels healthier thus reducing chances of a clot. You can research this, if you want.

    When Dr. Barnard talked about olive oil, he mentioned its negative effects for weight loss, insulin resistance, hormonal issues and the issue of saturated fat raising cholesterol. Dr. Joel Kahn just did a podcast discussing 2 studies showing EVOO users actually showed a benefit to endothelium and reduced IMT shown with an ultrasound of the carotid artery. Yes these studies were funded all or in part by a Spanish company, but Dr. Kahn said there were no conflicts of interest reported and the studies were well designed. While one study was listed as low-fat, it was not low fat at all in terms of 10-15% of calories, but the higher fat group, about 35% are the ones who showed benefits with EVOO. I would love to hear Dr. Barnard speak specifically to these kind of studies, CORDIOPREV and tell us if he has a different perspective than Dr. Kahn for example specifically in terms of heart health.
