I first saw this mini series about the Atlanta Child Murders in the 80s when I was a teenager and it scared the hell out of me as well as making me fascinated with the case. I've been trying to find a copy the watch it again for years but no DVD seems to exist. I finally tracked down a copy and thought I'd share we everyone as I'm sure there are others who have been trying to find it. Worth watching for the great cast alone, including Morgan Freeman, Martin Sheen, James Earl Jones, Jason Robards, Rip Torn, Bill Paxton.

I lived in Atlanta during this time. In 1979 I was attending high school at Turner High School. This school was maybe 3 blocks over from Wayne Williams home. One day I was late for school and I cut through the wooded path behind the school. As I was walking a man shouted to me, hey girl come here. When I first heard his voice I took off running. As I was running a dog was barking. I was being chased through the woods. I made it out and as I got to the front door of the school, I looked back. There was a dog that looked like a German shepherd and a black man with something in his hands like a belt or maybe a rope. This was mid February or early March of that year.

There were 8 of us all together. I was the oldest. I will never forget her yelling at the telling them to get the hell out of here and leave these kids alone. She is gone now but may God bless her as our Angel.

I was in my early 20s when all of this was happening....living in a state far away, and a new mother with my first baby son. The news on the TV was sickening....and left us horrified and dismayed that sooooo many children had been killed. I missed the programs on TV that were produced after the case went to trial....and I'm catching up to all of them that I can find now: thanks to the gift of CZcams.
I feel so sorry for all of the families and loved ones who experienced the murder of their children.
For many of them: there will never be closure....never be relief...and the grieving will be forever.
I'm wishing all of them continued strength, resiliency, and comfort apart from their troubles.

I remember when these children were going missing. I felt then the children knew the murderer, and that he was someone the adults knew him as well. A white man couldn't scout the neighborhoods that long without being seen. And if so he too was commonly known. However, the person guilty had to have been able to blend in, drop a body in the city limits and walk or drive away without setting off an alarm.
Williams was known and trusted. He built up the dead children knowing this. Thats why so many died. He was known and trusted joining the searchs at times and talked even to some of the family members of missing children.

I realize your comment is now 5 years old, so not even sure you can read my reply. After watching this movie, here's a couple of details I wish this movie had included.
#1 Roy Hazelwood. It was while the local police was driving him thru Atlanta that he noticed how everyone in the places he was taken to, immediately noticed him. when he asked the police about it, they said they were looking because they had a white man in the car with them. That was when they began looking at black men as suspects. a white man would have attracted too much attention in that area, so it had to be someone who could mingle and not be noticed by others
#2 the movie made no mention of John Douglas, who was basically the FBI profiler who told the prosecution how to interrogate Wayne williams.
I'm leaving a link to a documentary about this case that you, and others, may find more informative and accurate than this movie

There's a difference between the purpose of a documentary and a feature film, the latter is about the colour of justice in America, it's a morality tale, a story that tells us about conviction and the accused and presupposed guilt, it's not about the children who were murdered or even who killed them. Art is for moving people. This is not rocket science. Why rely on art forms for facts? It makes no sense. That's like using Picasso to study anatomy to become a doctor. Why mix two totally different genres and assess one using the standards of the other? You're not alone -- many commentators in CZcams trails complain that movies are not factual.
RIGHT. Duh! Just explain that to me, I'm mystified.

It's always genuinely pathetic how parents protect their pride and know their kid is a low life killer. p.s. Too bad the mothers didn't protect their kids. Their kids were out in the middle of the night, they would leave them for days by themselves, no fathers, no schedules, so many of the kids didn't even go to school. It was eye-opening to the rest of America how these families lived.

    • @rucianapollard7098
      @rucianapollard7098 Před rokem +3

I think your "facts" are off regarding the Atlanta Murder victims. I think the mothers worked very hard to protect their children. Several of the mothers said they warned their children about "stranger danger" and told them to only travel in groups and be in the house before dark. It's true that some of the victims were out at night, but according to police records, the majority of the victims went missing during the daytime, not at night. In the 10 years I have researched and studied these murders, I have not read anything where the mothers left their children alone for days at a time! Also, it isn't true that there were no fathers in the home. The majority of the victims came from 2 parent homes. Many of the victims were from poor homes, but by no means does that say they weren't loved and dearly missed by their families and friends!

Just watching this and learning about this case in school, there was evidence to point to him, but I do believe he was working with a partner, at least one of the kids was in his house, the fibers prove that. Most of the victims went with him willing probably thinking he could make them famous, back in those days black kids would not likely get in the car with a white man, so I don't believe it was a white man or the KKK... It could have been a police officer but still black... If they reopened the case with the new technology they have today maybe DNA would give them the killer. The last body points to the only person on the bridge at that time there is no other way around that... If he didn't kill the kids I do believe he killed the last man... I believe the case should be reopened and investigated again... I wasn't there to know if he did it or not but some evidence do point toward him.

I've always felt sorry for Mr. and Mrs. Williams. Wayne is narcissistic and the general public wasn't as aware of these personality disorders back then. The parents were as good of parents they could be to Wayne but he was getting out of control very quickly. They suffered his shame. I would not abandon my friend for something their child did.

Wayne's parents were very protective of him. He was a baby they had late in life. He was spoiled and his parents gave him everything he wanted! They filed bankruptcy because they paid thousands of dollars for Wayne to have a radio station in their basement! Because they pandered to him, he made selfish demands on his parents! Witnesses said they had seen Wayne yelling at his father and even hitting him!! Whatever Wayne was involved in, I truly believe that his dad knew about it! Maybe not his mother, but definitely his dad.

The fact that they never produced a shred of evidence to "prove" he did it and he was found guilty is the justice system at it's best. The fact that he was black probably played a major role in his conviction and you can say what you want but a black man is already guilty before the facts are supplied to prove his innocence in the system.

*_On March 30, police added their first adult victim to the list of murdered children. He was Larry Rogers, 20, linked with younger victims by the fact that he had been asphyxiated. No cause of death was determined for a second adult victim, 21-year-old Eddie Duncan, when his body was found on March 31. On April 1, ex-convict Michael McIntosh, age 23, was added to the roster on the grounds that he had also been asphyxiated._*
*_By April 1981, it seemed apparent that the "children's murder" case was getting out of hand. Community critics denounced the official victims list as incomplete and arbitrary, citing cases like the January 1981 murder of Faye Yearby to prove their point._*
*_Like "official" victim Angel Lenair, Yearby was bound to a tree by her killer, hands tied behind her back; she had been stabbed to death, like four acknowledged victims on the list. Despite these similarities, police rejected Yearby's case on grounds that (a) she was a female -- as were Wilson and Lenair -- and (b) at 22, she was "too old" -- although the last acknowledged victim had been 23. (Dave Dettlinger, examining police malfeasance in The List, suggests that 63 "pattern" victims were capriciously omitted from the "official" roster, twenty-five of them after a suspect's arrest supposedly "ended" the murders.)_*

@@Native5 There have always been cases of murdered children - and sadly there'll always be - but after Wayne Williams arrest, the cases of children kidnapped, then murdered in one location and their bodies disposed of somewhere else suddenly ended.
Also, the fibers found in many victims matching his (very rare) green carpet, bedding, dog hair, car carpet etc is uncontestable scientific evidence too. This wasn't as emphasised in the trial as it would be today as they worried that the lesser educated members of the jury back tgen wouldn't be able to understand it, but if you care to research this it'll leave you no doubt about his guilt.
It's very unfortunate for the victims' families that the DA didn't prosecute him for all the murders but - rightly or wrongly - they were looking for a watertight case and a certain guilty verdict to take this vile predator off the streets in order to save lives. Conspiracy theories or not, you can rest assured that the right person was jailed in any case.
