Love having rob back more frequently.. reminds me of when I started watching..Jonnny you're the best but when you have rob to bounce topics back and forth, feels complete
Definitely
As horrible as it sounds to write this comment, this injury has been a blessing in disguise when it comes to Robman reconnecting with the community. Really good seeing his face so much this year.
@@shootboxpodcast I think this is where we use the term "silver lining". It is horribleness-safe.
I am so jealous of the friendship these guys have.
For me going from my ps1 to the Dreamcast was the biggest shock in graphics clarity and color. Just blew my mind.
The first time I saw MSR, I was completely sold. Played that game for 100s of hours.
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Absolutely. Seeing NFL 2K and Soul Calibur, in particular, blew my friggin’ mind!
Yeah same here I was 14 in 1999 and got house of the dead 2 and blew me away.power stone was cool and loved resident evil code Veronica.also crazy taxi
You guys need to get together more often. This was a great episode. Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles. After Sony and Microsoft got into gaming Segas days were numbered. Gaming hasn't been the same since Sega stopped making consoles
Johnny and Robman are always very badass episodes!!
Loved hearing about Summer of 1999. I remember taking my 3 sons 5,4, and 3 to Star Wars Phantom Mennace for sure. My wife was expecting my 4th son in December. I was taking the boys to arcades alot and we would play games together on PS1.
Thanks for these videos.
It’s literally the first movie I took my first born son to. He had just turned 3 and he was instantly hooked to Star Wars after the Phantom Menace. Lol
I miss those pre Internet days of actually going to stores. I went to a midnight launch for the Dreamcast actually with a friend who had preordered it and Power Stone was one of the games he bought. That was a great game and I couldn’t believe the graphics and fluid gameplay.
Not to mention the 1999 was when the matrix came out in theatres! What a year! Nothing beats nostalgic memories with best friends! Great vid!
Johnny do you think that you still have these magical moments nowadays or has the magic worn off over the years? All your stories that you tell ooze with nerd passion. Another great video thank you for sharing
Oh we definitely still have those magical moments now! But there was something kind of special about gaming before the Internet really blew up.
You need to find new genres that you can play with your friends. If your friends are cool enough there's so many types of games to play together now.
@@doublestarships646 this is so true! Me & my buddies are constantly finding new co-op games to play which is a great way to keep in touch when you all move a bit farther from each other.
@@Ty-douken There's always something new and there will always be old titles to go back to, either to rediscover or have new experiences with.
I think enough time has to pass before shit is able to be looked back on fondly..that’s me anyways ..Dreamcast was the last time I was really blown away by visuals.
Johnny saying ‘riiiiidge raceeer’ kills me everytime😂😂😂
My brother and I got our first dreamcast with blue stinger and we stayed up all night playing that game. Great memories. Thanks for the video John and Rob.
what a great friendship. Makes me wanna reach out to my old friends and reconnect.
This really brought me back i miss Zellers and the days of spoil free hype a time we just enjoyed things and didn’t overly pick things apart.
These videos literally make my day!
Johnny my man, I know you've probably got your hands full but please do more regular videos, I can't get enough!
I always love these stories!
I never had summer like the one you guys were talking about but I do have one summer gaming memory that really sticks with me. Summer of 2001 when the Gameboy Advance launched. I was 10 and my parents only bought stuff for me for my birthday and Christmas. Neither were close, so I had to save $100 which took most of the summer. During that time, all of my friends were getting GBAs one by one, so I got to see a few of the launch titles like Super Mario Advance, Dodgeball Advance, and Tony Hawk 2.
Finally, around the end of the summer, I was almost there like 90 something dollars and Target dropped the price to $90 for a weekend. My Dad and I went right out and got one. We agreed at the beginning of the summer that he'd cover the game so I got Mario Kart Super Circuit! It was either right at the game's launch or pretty close to it so it felt extra special to me. My friends and I spent the next few weeks doing that 4 way link cable thing where you can play off one cartridge and had a lot of fun.
I don't even know where that GBA is now but I'll always remember that summer.
Summers of ‘98 and ‘99 were probably the best days of my youth. Endless summers. Hanging out with friends. Amazing games coming out. Great movies coming out too. And oh man..the Pokemon card hustle was real!
The true friendship between you guys is so amazing and the stories of that summer become that much more engaging and emotional - I love this episode of your show.
So much passion and nostalgia I can relate to come through on these videos.
Love hearing you reminisce about specific periods in the past. The late 90s were a very nostalgic time for me as well!
Gosh, wish I could go back in time! Loved the Ace Combat series, GTA, Gran Turismo, Wipeout, etc...PS2 was just around the corner...
How can I thumbs up twice for rob episodes
Multiple accounts. I have like 5 youtube channels.
= D
1999 was one of the best years in my life aswell, I got goosebumps when you mentioned the Phantom Menace build up, it's all coming back. Great video guys!
I was only 10 at the time, but 1999 was one of of my all-time favorite summers too. Just so many good memories. Like becoming hardcore obsessed with Pokemon, lol. Good times
EVERYONE needs a friend like Rob Man. Some truly beautiful and wholesome stories here
Star wars episode one was everywhere. Advertised on pop cans, cereal boxes, billboards, toys, candy, you couldn't not get hyped.
1999 was the best year. For games and movies. Thanks again for a great episode Rob and Johnny.
Man, i love watching you guys. The chemistry is so good and you guys always manage to take me back to the good old days :)!
I swear I can listen to you and rob talk about old memories forever.
Yeah that was a great summer for sure. I remember the hype for episode 1 at that time was nuts.
Johnny, Rob : LEGENDS, one of the greatest episodes yet!! 🎸 🎸
This gave me so muuuuuuuuuch joy, youhave no idea, John and Rob.
2 years ago I went to a garage sale and I found Power Stone 2 for $.25! Best deal for a rare video game of my life. I will always remember that moment!
Dreamcast is my all time favourite console! SO many amazing memories with that console and amazing games; Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Shenmue, Soul Reaver, Crazy Taxi, Ikaruga just to name a few. Those jackets are amazing!! I must have one! 😃 😃
Shenmue is crap
I'm about the same age as you guys. I love hearing your nostalgic gaming stories! It brings back so many great memories for me! Keep it up guys!
Two episodes with Rob so close together? We must have been very good boys and girls!
Damn guys that's a good year! Great to hear you and Rob talking about it. Made my day a bit brighter! Thanks as always.
Man i loved R4 and ace combat that year! I was 19. amazing memories.
I still listen to the R4 soundtrack.
Man Johnny and Rob making me go back in time I was 20 at the time, and remember meeting this Vietnamese college student who sold bootleg Dreamcast games at the mall that came on CD-R disc. He was Emo and wore a trench coat and met you in the food court....LOL
Haha always happy to see these guys talk about their good times.
Love you so much guys seeing you both so happy, laughing while remembering the olds times and sharing these stories is so soothing. You are really cool people and your friendship is something we all appreciate and can relate to. Saludos desde Ecuador al Feliz Jugador de Consolas y a El Robombre 🔥🤘🏻🔥
99 is my favorite gaming summer, too. That was right after I graduated high school! Great times.
One of my favorite “story time” videos you’ve done recently. Thank you for sharing John and Rob! You guys are part of my Sunday routine :)
I want a let's play from you guys playing Blue Stinger - this looks hilarious!
I imported the Dreamcast as well. Such an amazing time. It was the first console where the console version of arcade games surpased the arcade.
summer of 2011 when i just graduated high school. Can't believe it has been 10 yrs already. I feel very old....
Story time with Robman?
Yes please!!
Glad I am not the only one who loved Blue Stinger at launch lol!
Aside from all the great memories I have of the Dreamcast I can also remember the pure feeling of excitement waiting for 9/9/99 and the devastating feeling of selling 1500 USD worth of Dreamcast games to a second hand game store for 50 dollars after my Dreamcast died and long after it was discontinued. To this day I wish I never sold them but I still have the memories at least.
4:46 "Blue Stinger", good game; I actually live-streamed that on the day the game takes place: Christmas Eve 2018. Back in 1999, 2018 seemed so far away.
The late 90’s were amazing for Gaming. So many incredible games and the Dreamcast is still my favourite console ever and I’m lucky enough to still have my original console ☺️
Thinking of Rogers Videos brings a tear to my eye. Used to get $10 a week to mow the lawn. Every 2 weeks I went there with $20 as bought 2 previously viewed $9.99 DVDs for $14.99 and spent the rest on treats. Some of my most watched DVDs.
Wonderful Episode, thank you guys seriously.
We are so lucky to have such good gaming memories !!! These stories always put a smile on my face 😉
This was a great episode, I love hearing you guy’s stories. Thanks for sharing
The way you put your hands on Rob throughout the video makes me all warm inside. Such a subconscious way of showing how much his friendship means to you. Love these videos!
Ace Combat 3 and Ridge Racer Type 4 were Namco presentation, graphic design and music firing on all cylinders. I worked at Gamestop or Babbage's when they sold import Saturn games because Sega USA killed the US version. The gaming industry was so much more genuine, daring, and exciting back then.
Happy Sunday everyone! Who's playing Skyward Sword and loving it?
Thank for sharing the great stories John man and Mega man, you guys are awesome
Me absolutely loving Skyward Sword. It didn't exactly work very well for me with the Wii Motion plus so it's great to have other options for controls.
@@That1PissedOffBoomer for sure :)
@@That1PissedOffBoomer btw I clicked on your bio hoping for some rants and raves - nothing there :(
1999 was the last great year of my life. Everything fell apart after that and I’m just now, at 52, picking up the pieces and hitting restart. And it was an incredible year for video games…and movies and television.
I can't believe I'm only watching this now what the hell! CZcams alerts has failed me 😭. I can't believe you and Rob Man actually lined up to go get Star Wars toys that is so awesome!!!! Would have loved to be there with you guys 😍
Yes that ridge race has some of the coolest and soothing soundtracks of all time!!
I wish I had gamer friends like Johnny growing up in the 90's.
Great episode I feel like I vicariously lived thru due to your combine enthusiasm and details one of the best episodes on this channel
I feel like the hype around The Phantom Menace is something that younger people will literally never understand. The perfect blend of grassroots hype and media marketing. It was insane and we'll never see anything like it
I watch this now ever summer
99' definitely lots of memories.
Johnny, Rob, love your stories
Here's my experience of 9/9/99
Dreamcast day, it was rainy, and depressing. I remember picking up my console at TRU. But jeez that line was so long. Sadly they didn't have Sonic Adventure, it was sold out.
Made it out of the store with my console . And my quest continued. Sears was another retailer that carried games, limited, as did Circuit City. Sad horn. Also out.
I happen to run into the local manager from EB Games. Visiting Circuit City. I took a chance and asked if they knew what games their store had. Offered to call her store. I waited.
And then, yes they did. I thanked her, then went thru traffic safely in the rain. Made it to the store, there was a bit of a line, but thankfully the manager earlier called ahead and asked if they could hold a copy for me.
I waited my turn. Hyped, excited. Then I obtained it. Success.
Totally worth the wait. Sonic Adventure was my first Dreamcast game.
Yeah, sometimes I open up my old gaming magazines from the late 90's early 2000's and that nostalgia just hits strong. Those were good times.
These are some of my favorite episodes of yours, where you and Rob are having a blast while reminiscing about cool memories from the past. Something about the energy and the passion that you two have that just can't be faked or done anywhere else. Love it!
I really need over this format so much. The podcast style conversations and gaming stories of the past. So fun to watch you guys remember and bring up things. No one else is doing this please keep it going. Thank you for doing what you do. Much appreciated.
Summer of 1997 for me and my friend Nathan. Had a Sega Saturn and was late to the party, picked up Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Fighters MegaMix and Street Fighter Alpha 2. Played the hell out of all those and then early September went into EB games and they had broke the release date for Final Fantasy VII. I did not have a Playstation at the time, but I left that day with one and a copy of Final Fantasy VII. For me it wasn't just that summer, (I was 17 at the time so younger than you guys) most of that year was epic. Finished the year playing Suikoden on Playstation and Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
1999 was the greatest year in human history 😢
Absolute favorite gaming channel. This much love and passion deserves all the love and passion it receives and more
I was born in 1990. So I’m no spring chicken when it comes to gaming. But I’m really surprised to learn that arcade games were more graphically powerful and home hardware had to catch up. Really interesting!
Great episode. Love the nostalgic looks back to specific times. I'm trying to remember the episode where rob and johnny talk about the fight they alluded to where they didnt speak for a while. Anyone remember what episode that was?
Johnny talked about that at length in the "Worst Times in my Life" video
@@bluestinger2526 Oh thank you! I was racking my brain trying to find that again! I knew someone here would remember.
This is so wholesome and nostalgic.
And that is why I can never truly hate on the Phantom Menace. The buildup for that movie that summer was insane and can’t ever be duplicated. It was awesome.
Man i remember a summer like this with the demo of carmageddon on pc. Lasted i think 5 minutes and me and a mate would take turns playing while the other was kicking a football against the wall outside (my pc was in conservatory). great times.
As soon as I saw the title, I smiled and knew exactly what you guys would be talking about. The first video I ever watched was your THE DREAMCAST ROCKS video 10 years ago back when I was looking up reviews to justify buying a Dreamcast. You guys talking about Sonic Adventure and Power Stone entertained me so much, it reminded me of myself and my best friends. Love this video and love you guys!
Love this structure of “memories” episodes! They’re awesome.
Lmao the part where he talks about the goth guy with the two girls had me cracking up. Made my Sunday morning thanks guys !
I have just always loved this channel. I love your stories. They make me feel nostalgic. I can put myself in your shoes and then it makes me think of my own memories. That’s effective storytelling!
Everything on this channel is just so upbeat and authentic. You don’t chase the news or dwell on the bad. You just focus on the best parts of gaming!
With me, my favourite ever gaming moment was growing up with the GameCube being a major part of my childhood, i think it was when i was 8 or 9 2003 or 2004, me and my brother both got a Beko TV and Gamecube each for our birthday, we’re twins and Starfox Adventures and Mario Sunshine were our mains, good times 😊
Did i read that right? each of you got a tv and a gamecube of your own? damnn
@@meyelejuega3602 yeah we were spoiled back then 😂 I’ll always remember that birthday
These nostalgia videos make me so happy!
I don't know why but I love listening to these stories, for hours on end even. Thank you Johnny and Rob
Dude..I'll never forget seeing a dreamcast in a kiosk before it came out. I was also on a family vacation and it blew my mind. I felt like I glimpsed into the future.. and it was glorious. The shock of PS1 to Dreamcast can't be overstated. And that sega arcade magic was on FULL display. Just couldn't believe I could actually own these games.. and they looked THIS good.
For me and my 3 friends, it was when we all moved to Japan for 3 months to study Japanese and just live in the land of gaming and anime. There were a lot of misadventures, but since we were all in it together, it was ALL fun! When we came back from Japan, we all moved in together into our friend's 5 bedroom house. So, the fun continued. It was a great time for a bunch of young single guys!
I got the Dreamcast out yesterday to play some PSO. What a time that was back in the day. Love bringing it out once in awhile to relive the glory days lol
I just finished my 5th trails game. I will never forget the twist and turns in it! Played it for the whole day just to finish it. Definitely a fun new memory.
I love you guys!! I wish I had friends I could talk to exactly like this!
While I don't think I have anything profound to say I just want to leave this comment and say that this video is wonderful. I love listening to the two of you speak and reminisce! I remember being in awe watching my brother play blue stinger. That has always been on my bucket list to go back and play through.
I remember that Summer, people went nuts when Episode 1 came out! 1999 seems like yesterday, thanks for the memories John. Awesome show 👍🏻
I found your channel about a year and a half ago as lockdowns were hitting. Have enjoyed every vid. Thanks for the positivity and wholesomeness during these times. Keep it up!
I spent over $500 on 9-9-99. The Dreamcast had a great launch and was an amazing system.
I absolutely love watching your videos. The enthusiasm and nostalgia is genuinely heart warming. I love gaming and you guys make me feel so happy that it's my hobby of choice.
Kids these days will never understands the magical time of retro gaming before the high speed Internet was around... Such a nostalgic time ❤️❤️❤️
Man visiting Japan in the late 90s must have been so awesome!
Everyone talks about 1998 as being one of the best years for gaming (with good reason!) but this is a great reminder that 1999 was no slouch too - damn we didn't know how good we had it at the time
In 1999 my best mate and his older brother were spending their summer days playing this strange new game called FF8. I had no clue what it was but I was mesmerised watching them play my first true rpg experience. So much so that my friend at the time lent me his copy of ff7 telling me how amazing it was and to play it first. I fell in love instantly and blasted my way through the whole game in a couple of weeks. They were still on ff8 but past disc one which I then got from them. Then disc 2, then disc 3 and finally disc 4 one day when they had stopped playing it for a bit. I managed to beat both ff7 and ff8 before both of them and we still laugh about it to this day. Amazing gaming memories for me in the summer of ‘99!
Great Video guys I am 44 now so I think I was the same age as you both during that summer. I do remember standing outside of Toys R us getting the figures ahead of time. I remember how fun it was to wait in line and I met this guy in line and talked with this guy for the longest time while waiting. He was into Star Wars and Robotech like me. I regret not getting his phone number and hanging out with him afterwards because we probably would have been friends.
I remember the hype around phantom menace was crazy. I was in 11th grade in 99 and I remember coming home from school one day and my mom had gone to Walmart and gotten a whole bunch of the figures for both my brother and me. It was so cool. Then I went and saw the movie the Friday it came out after getting home from school. I miss the 90s so damn much. Thank you guys for the trip down memory lane.
Thank you both for doing this. It's always a joy to see you reliving stuff and your enthusiasm is infectious.
For me It'd probably be the summer of 1997. I was big into Quake. GLQuake and QuakeWorld were out, and Team Fortress was out. I'll never forget those matches over dial-up. So awesome.
you know, i'm having a tough time in life right now, i know things could be worse, and are not as bad as others, but i wanna say that you two guys have been a major comfort for me in life to not think of such things.
