That’s a lot of Schefs in the kitchen. Your trees are looking fantastic, Toy. So great getting all those aerial roots, that’s awesome. Gotta learn how to train those now! Such fun
Love Sheffleras and imo even easier to care for than most other "trees" to grow and stay alive. As you stated yourself it is not so easy to make them grow in the right direction but I guess that tradeoff is worth it when you can be messing around with them as u want.
The problem with Schefflera is that it's too easy to grow. :) Once you get one and see how well it grows and how easy it roots you'll propagate every cutting and make more bonsai. I got one plant this year, already started 2 bonsai and I still have a bunch of cuttings rooted in water waiting to be used for something. :) I love the greenhouse and it seems that your scheffleras love it too.
Isn't that the truth! That's exactly what happened with me too. Last year I ended up with all these random Schefflera's everywhere and eventually put them all together in one big pot.
For directional pruning with scheffleras, you can do it! Try to leave a larger stub above the node you want the new branch coming from than you did at around 14:00.

Thanks so much for this! The variation between your trees was so helpful to see, and I didnt know they grew aerial roots. I'm putting mine in my tropical paludarium, Im assuming the aerial roots can handle dropping down into the water?
They sure can! Mine end up growing out all over the place if left unchecked. But on that note, they'll creep into other pots too. Thanks for the comment!
i have one of these in my pythons enclosure. i wonder if i could get it to grow similar. I only have 2-3 in of soil but some good floor space, so i assumed it would just overgrow it. Its 36x18 in size. Enclosures humidity is always 60-80 percent and the soil is enriched with all sorts of bugs
What are those white spots all over the leaves? Is that some sort of mineral build up? Just wondering. Also, love the ladybug idea I’ve done that before too just bringing them in with my plants from outside
Yeah, its liquid fertilizer. Some of these are way in the way so I kind of wing it and just spray the best I can back there. It ends up getting everywhere.
No specific bonsai stores that I know of, but there are a few that sell pots and little starter trees. Far west landscape is one that comes to mind. Pretty spendy though. I personally like northwest organic nursery, and Edwards nursery. Even zamzows has a lot of bonsai pots, and some decent starter material.
Hey man, good timing. i bought my first group of 3 at a big box store for only $15 yesterday. I'm a beginner and not careful. All I have seen is basically like "it's impossible to kill these things." So i cut them way down to maybe 6 inches, and all the leaves (bc there was white and black mold and I think maybe scale). I aggressively pruned the roots too. Anyway my point is I wasn't nervous before, but now I am bc I didn't realize season was a big factor for indoor plants. Is there any way these might survive lol
Well, I would say you still have a shot with them. Heat and humidity are key. If you can't find a way to keep them humid, put a clear plastic bag over it and spray some water inside. It's a crude version of a greenhouse but it's effective. Assuming the soil has good drainage, and they're getting good light, staying warm and humid, I think there's a lot of hope.
You could use a small wire hook to pin them to the soil in the areas you want so they stay. Nice collection.

Just curious i know these love humidity does misting them constantly help?
It helps to keep them healthy for sure. For growing Ariel roots it doesn't work as well as the clear plastic bag trick.

Probably calcium residue from watering with tap water.
