Joe Rogan and Jon Bernthal discuss the early days of AMC's breakout show, The Walking Dead. I personally remember it fondly from Season 1 and Jon really shows why the earlier seasons of that show were much more special.
Jon Bernthal is an actor known for such roles as Sheriff's Deputy Shane Walsh in "The Walking Dead," vigilante Frank Castle in "The Punisher," and more recently, corrupt cop Wayne Jenkins in HBO's miniseries, "We Own This City." Bernthal is also the host of the weekly interview podcast series "REAL ONES with Jon Bernthal."

Jon’s interviews with the Ukrainian sniper are wild. Hunt them down. The guy breaks from combat and calls in.
Jon Bernthal played Shane so well that every season after his death I would constantly be wondering "What would Shane have done in this situation?"
The Governor is lucky he never met Shane
I thought of this too! Had Rick and Shane sorted things out, moved on to the Prison and they meet The Governor, Shane would’ve done so much damage to that man.
yeah literally every villain I was just thinking about what shane would do. He didn't last very long but he made a massive impact
lol I thought I was the only one
What was great about his character, is that in his death, and essentially forcing Rick to kill him, that made Rick the ruthless character he would become. All Rick's weaknesses in the first 2 seasons...leaving the camp to rescue Merle, the futile search for Sophia, not killing the barn walkers, and not killing Randall..were exposed by Shane.
Durring the part where the governor meets his "new family" I though he might have a redemption ark but nope he is still a phyco paths. URG!!! why did Hershal have to die that way 😔
My dad suffers from severe clinical depression. I was not able to really form a connection with him most of my childhood. However, in 2013 he asked if I would watch this zombie show with him. I did and we were hooked on TWD for YEARS. It helped bring us together after years of not being able to relate. Thank you so. so much for that. It means the world to me.
That’s truly beautiful. I’m glad you and your father have a better relationship now.
I am happy for you and your Dad. Thank you for sharing!!
@SoWokedamn brotha. How are you doing today? I went through a bad breakup back in 2011. I was severely depressed for 2.5 years. Dreams took me back to what I wanted. Then I’d wake up in reality. Ended up hating dreams haha. I remember the day I finally got over it. I was surfing. I told myself.”bro I love you” that night I didn’t have dreams of her. And it kept getting better and better
That's a awesome story.
Very cool..
Him and Rick were absolute gold in walking dead, two great actors hitting their peak 💪🏻
Season 1&2 was epic. Without a doubt peak TWD. Season 3&4 was great too with Governor then it went downhill from there.
@@jonfreeman9682 disagree Negan and that era was wonderful some of the best seasons of TWD ever
@@autismmode1663 ehh.
@@jonfreeman9682 neegan era was the best
Seasons 1-6 and Season 9 were peak Walking Dead. Also Lennie James portrayal of Morgan Jones is a legendary performance as well
If Shane could have protected Lori and Carl without falling for Lori he would have absolutely owned the walking dead world. He adapted to the new world before the other people realized they even needed too.
I think Shane was a better choice for Lori- he was willing to do anything to keep her and Carl safe! I loved the character of Rick- but Shane was just more complex….
@Dee Spence shane had too many flaws and was slowly losing his mind, it would of been a matter of time before he turned Lori and Carl
Yeah he lost touch with humanity too quickly. Rick, (yes it took him awhile to get there), at least held on to the small bit of humanity he had left in him.
Reminds me of Sampson and Delilah in the Bible.
@@deespence8629 complete nonsense
This man crushed it as the Punisher. Need him back with a great director
He will be back probably with the Midnight Suns
Shane - twd
Great actor man, he was awesome as the meth head gang member in that prison movie, great in every role he takes. In person he was very chill to me and my friends the night we were at the same party.
Disney needs to figure how to handle adult Marvel shows
They handled the Netflix shows well. They got it figured out. Disney owned marvel when they did those
That TWD episode where Shane opens the barn is easily one of my favorite scenes in any movie or show ever. Great job to the whole TWD cast there.
Yes. That changed the whole plot lol. Sophia was revealed too
Agreed that was such a huge shocker with Sophia! Especially having read the comics.
Jon Bernthal is a phenomenal actor. You can tell he gives it his all with whatever role he's in. So respectful and humble.
Absolutely. Love how he tells nobody wanted TWD and even HBO AMC rejected it at first as they shopped around and they managed to get funding for a 6 episode trial just bunch of guys feeling grateful for 6 measly episodes and it was a hit thanks to Frank Darabont who was persistent in the project. Just a great story.
@@jonfreeman9682 right on. I think Darabont did an amazing thing with that cast/crew but I often wonder what the show would have become if HBO did pick it up back then. Maybe it wouldn’t have lost its way or even ended after 6-8 seasons
How so?
Shane is one of the best characters of all time, the best part of season 2 by far.
And Shane proved to be right about things. The later seasons proved that
Wait wym, what were Shane right about ?
@@rener7940 he’s not right about everything but he was right about things never going back to what they where and it’s kill or be killed now
the fact that Jon wasn't nominated for an emmy for the 'barnaggedon' episode alone shows how much is wrong with award shows. that performance was next level.
@@rener7940 did you watch the show? Rick was too touchy feely. Shane had warned him. Shane made it clear that a hard kill or be killed mentality was needed. If Shane had been alive when they crossed paths with Negan things would have played out differently. Rick was weak and useless
Those first 4 seasons of The Walking Dead was top tier television for me. While there were definitely good moments in the rest of the show, seasons 1-4 had me in a chokehold as it was airing.
Totally agree. Season 1&2 are the best then 3&4 with the Governor. The reason why it's so good is because of a small cast and simple story before they built it up to such a large cast and complex stories like Negan and whisperer and Commonwealth. The early seasons felt more personal.
Mannnn I definitely agree with this , I love great television . The walking dead season 1-2 was fucking awesome and Shane was a beat of a actor and 3-4 the governor was ruthless I love it after that it went down hill for me and I stop watching unfortunately it lost it’s originality and I stepped away but Shane was the best
I loved it the first 4 seasons but after that I lost interest went too long and drawn out
Absolutely. Seasons 1 and 2 were peak, must-see television. Seasons 3 and 4 were still great and really engaging. However, over the next few years from S5 to S8, the show went from great, to good, to just meh.
Starting with S5 or S6 writing and many characters became kinda cringe, thinly-veiled woke themes and political messaging started to emerge, plot armor for certain characters, ridiculous over-the-top scenes that asked the audience to suspend too much disbelief and broke the show’s setting and tone, democratizing the narrative direction of the show and characters actions by blatantly pandering for fan approval via Talking Dead (like when they announced that Morgan would be leaving TWD and moving to FTWD on a talk show before SHOWING this on screen), etc.
I hung around until the resolution of Negan’s initial arc, but my interest and engagement with the show had been in free fall for at least a season or two before I stopped watching. I have no interest whatsoever in watching the final 3 seasons.
@@SSPspaz lol u did much better than I thought I didn't go past 4 I'm like this is not the walking dead we came accustomed to Loving over the years, I was like man this is becoming trash I tried but couldn't get through when I think of the walking dead I think of the first 4 seasons that's all
If they didn’t fire Frank Darabont the show would have stayed good.
Man I wish they would have him on to tell his side of what happened behind the scenes with amc. You can search some of the emails he sent but I think it was partly bc he was fed up with how the network kept on screwing them all. Eventhough it might have made him out to be a jerk everyone who has history working alongside including Bernthal says that they very much admire the guy bc he has a passion and ultimately respect for his craft. Amc however is the total opposite so its no wonder he got canned
What the AMC executives did to Frank Darabont was really disgusting
Amen
Fun fact: it DID stay good. (But I love Darabont and it was sad how the studio screwed him over)
@@bobbyadams8889 not only that but its borderline criminal what they did pretty much stealing the show right from him as he was mainly responsible for bringing the comics to life in living colour lol. However they didn't give a shit and had wanted all the profit for themselves spending as little as possible. At least he took them to court over this which they ended up paying out 200 mill so I guess you could say he got the last laugh before everything was said and done
The barn scene was that I gave Jon a lot of respect. After seeing him in Fury, Sicario etc, he’s a great actor and has a bright future
Seems like a relatable guy. Just a cool bro.
A great actor. Was awesome as Shane and is top 3 villains in TWD. He deserves bigger roles.
@@jonfreeman9682 he was and wasn't a villain. He didn't agree with the group because he was ahead of them mentally for an apocalypse. Jon Bernthal has to be the best interview I've seen on JRE in a long long long time. You can tell Joe knows it and is being MUCH more reserved and slow. He is seeing someone being 100% and open and who has been through some real experiences and is taking away true wisdom from it. I'm blown away.
Just wish he did stutter thorough things so much. Makes it hard to listen to. And he is a professional podcaster.
@@bradley617 He can't help it tho. He's been open about his huge stutter / anxiety disorders. The fact that he can act so well despite these AND has gotten so much better in recent years attests to his character.
It is a really good interview for Joe because he isn't interrupting him and just listening.
Me and my dad started this show in 2012. We just finished watching the show together. Thank you TWD ❤. The best years of my life Fr. What a time.
Same, my dad and I started watching in 2012. We would watch it every Sunday every year for 10 years. I am an adult now and live on my own but would still come over each Sunday for TWD and dinner. It feels like more than just losing a show when you have such a memory attached to it.

Secretly, that's the answer bit. Why was you afraid to say it.
What made him such a great character is he wasn't a bad guy. He saved Rick's life in the hospital and saved the wifey and kid. Then he got into a relationship with wifey both thinking he was dead. But Shane had dark side and killed when necessary.

Even though things took a turn eventually turning it over to mrs.Kang, she did what she could with what was left. I hope 2023 brings back maybe even a flash back of mr Shane Walsh! 😁😄 appreciate everything you did for those memories mr. Bernthal ! Don’t understand how much it means to me!

Jon is one of the most likeable guys that always plays a role you're not supposed to like. It speaks to his amazing talent.

I stayed captivated all the way through to season 11. Never got old to me. Also loved most of Fear. Especially the first three seasons and season 7. World Beyond wasn’t my favorite with the kid actors but I loved getting more story from the rest of the country and the CRM
But you gotta admit the show kinda fell off with season 7-8 and never really felt the same after.
Yeah I'm a die-hard TWD and Fear fan too. Couldn't get into beyond as it's a kids show. TWD lost alot of fans after season 7 and have been on life support but true zombie fans like us will always tune in. IMO Shane and the Governor are top two greatest villains. Negan is third. What made all 3 such great villains is they're not all bad. Lance was another great villain but they didn't do him justice with such a lame death and arguably he is the most complex villain because you don't understand how motivation at all. LoL
Didn't really catch on to Fear, but watched season 7 recently because for some reason its the only one on AMC+. The first episode of Season 7 is so badass and kind of works as a standalone story. I took a break from main series to grieve for characters but when I picked it back up knowing the whisperers were looming and seeing equally nasty threats arise those final seasons was really something. So glad this has become a universe of content. Excited to see whats next and to watch the spinoffs. The show isn't over in my mind its just branching into new paths.

It’s all the other subsequent stuff after that that make Shane a scumbag and really weird.
He began to treat people really weird and did REALLY questionable and just downright irrational and wrong/evil things.
@@Kallah_DaughterOfYAHUAH ik bro that's what I said
@@miklovv sorry I misread what you wrote.
Maaaaaaaan HOW MANY shows, how many have we lost to lazy writing near end? Countless....... Lost, GOT, Walking Dead, the list is huge.....
I honestly think the money is an issue as it runs out, OR they have so much from success network tells them to make more seasons and they rich af and NOT as passionate as when they were broke essentially.....
Don’t forget Dexter..
Darabont was fired from TWD because AMC wanted to spend 50% per episode and churn out 2x the episodes. Kinda speaks for itself.
The show-runners for GOT where in over their heads, they intentionally made it harder on themselves by refusing to hire a writing staff. In hindsight it’s actually astonishing that Game of thrones worked as long as it did, had D&D been more experienced and organized from the onset the show would’ve stayed strong to the very end.
Breaking Bad was the only highly successful and critically acclaimed show that had a good ending. Can't think of much else. Better Call Saul was great too.
And people start climbing the ladder and attaining power and hire all their worthless friends. That's a ton of what I see in the world anyway, could be the same.
I've enjoyed Jon's work in everything I've seen him in. He always gives his all and makes every performance memorable, believable and "real" for that character. Wish him much and continued success.
scusa se ti disturbo.puoi aiutarmi a trovare solo le stagioni dove jon partecipa?le stagioni e gli episodi sono tante e scaricare tutto è complicato!grazie se mi rispondi e anche se non lo fai
As someone who loves TWD it was fantastic hearing Jon's perspective on it. Very well said
Season 2 was brilliant, one of the best seasons of any show in TV history, period.
Horrendous take
Hands down the best season. First two seasons are the best then 3&4. Shane and the Governor were the best villains. It would be cool if Shane stayed with Rick as buddy buddy thru a few more seasons fighting together.
Season 1 is better in my opinion
@@extremelyonline I respect that, and I definitely agree that season 1 was great also. For me, something about season 2 raised the bar a notch on an already great show. It went from being a "zombie show" in S1 to a "human show featuring zombies" in S2, and I became much more personally invested in the characters themselves.
@@jt-ff3yx Interesting as I saw it was a human show in the very first Episode.
Morgan with his wife and kid.
Rick going back to end the suffering of the bicycle lady in the park.
Caught me in the feels right from the start all the way to the last episode with what happened to Rosita...
This guy was one of the character that got me into the show. I wish he went longer season but may be the shortened role is perfect for his character!
I never liked Bernthal until these kinds of intimate conversations and watching his own channel.
Hes a good person which trumps his acting career.
God bless him.
Season 2 of the Walking Dead is my favorite. There's that special kind of magic that he talks about here, there's a palpable sense of strong passion and a hungriness, stubborness, a true survival kind of attitude that's felt from the crew. That season was butchered by interference and budget cuts but it WORKS SOMEHOW. Darabont and Co. are true artists and survivors.
Jon Bernthal was legendary in TWD. Shane still is and will always be my favorite character not only because of Bernthal’s performance, but because of how well written Shane was and how he wasn’t perfect, but was what the group needed.
He was brilliant and was an antihero. He was a good guy but had a dark side and was Rick's BFF and their standoff at the end of season 2 was epic complete with the zombie swarm. I think season 2 and 3 with the Governor are the best. Along with season 4 when the Governor returns. Shane deserved another season at least. I'm rooting for him to get a huge role in another show.
I really think people give Shane as a character too much credit. I do see lots of people say he was "what the group needed". He wasn't a good person.
He happily would have sacrificed any one of the group if it meant saving his own skin or Carl/Lori. And when it came down to him or them, he'd probably leave them too. Sure he was ahead of the curb in a lot of ways but he didn't care about anything besides his own interests. If Daryl or Glen or Rick was injured with him on that trip instead of Otis, they'd get the bullet too.
But don't get me wrong, he was a GREAT character but because he was the bad guy, especially in the second season.
Honestly is episode is prolly one of the best ones joe has ever had on JRE And that's saying alot because he has done so many great interviews but Jon is the fucking man. Such a class act person and a man who just says it how it is and admits his own faults and owns up to them and learns and betters himself from them. He has become one of my favorite actors recently dude is the man. Keep up the good work Joe.
Proof?
Whhat is that!? What is that!? Lol that part cracks me up.
The first 4 season of walking dead were so good
First 5 . Season 5 hit its peak for most tuned in viewers. Rick finally became Shane in season 5 and was ruthless and terrifying af. Season was very dark and rick was constantly on the go out in the woods killing the dead and people like the show shoukd ne with not staying at a community for too long . And rick was at peoples throats and slaughtering cannibals in a dam church . At the end of season 5 once they came to Alexandria then it immediately went downhill for the show going forward as stuff got dragged out and etc
@@CHRISTALGIAUgh Alexandria was Just garbage. People shit in the farm but it was about 10 episodes meanwhile the prison and Alexandria were 2+ seasons.
I stuck with TWD from the first episode to the last. I have no regrets. I know a lot of people dropped off and I don't blame them, but the last few seasons were so good. Shane's character is still one of the most memorable characters in the entire show despite only being in a small part of it.
Proof?
I’ve been re watching twd and I see this on CZcams man love it
Jon goes straight into the top 5 of best guests that Joe has had on his podcast. His story really hit home with me.
Proof?
TWD is definitely not murder porn. Yes a lot of death happens, but majority of the deaths are meaningful, it hits hard. Most Hollywood films and Tv shows just blow people away and we think nothing of it. Most action films just blow away 20 random red shirts in one scene just because. That's murder porn. TWD is a show on what humanity would do in extreme situations and most of the deaths are taken seriously.
fr. the finale even proves that it isnt murder porn. they couldve killed a lot of characters for no reason. it was expected by fans that a lot of ppl would die because so many other more violent shows would do that for their last episode. but they only killed 3 characters. 2 nobodies and 1 big death that was well done and not at all gory.
People who never watched past Glenn say this kind of thing.
Yeah I don’t agree with Joe. He’s buggin
Agreed, joe doesn’t have a right to talk about TWD when gave up early and has a short attention span
Why is he still coming !!! Iconic moment on the show
The Walking Dead man omfg this show has a special place in my heart. Fucking great actors man the show is different, great interview!!
Season 1-6 TWD were amazing! Shane was an outstanding character
He is also one of the best Punishers since Ray Stevenson.
The best JRE episode in a while.
If Frank was allowed to do the show in his vision, would’ve been spectacular. I watched it to the end.
Man, in another world, we have a five-to-seven-season run of Darabont's TWD that is probably responsible for legitimizing genre television like GOT.
@@SaddenedSoul I mean, length wasn’t the issue. TWD is based off a comic series. Even franks twd would still be long. Hell, season 1 only covers 6 issues in a 200 issue comic
What most people don't understand is zombies are just a metaphor for other maladies of society. How we respond to society's maladies as fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, etc., is the kernel of this show and many of the other zombie movies going back to Roger Corman. Strip away our humanity due to the ugliest of societal maladies is the Walking Dead.
I always see zombies as a metaphor for dumb people who follow the herd mentality, and not thinking for themselves. And if anyone dares to break from the herd and say or do things that are deemed "controversial", then they will be eaten by the zombies, as it were.
Thank you brothers
The seasons of Walking dead with Shane, is some of my all time favorite television ever. Jon really brought that character to life, and I don't think it would've been as good as it was, if anyone else got the part of Shane. Jon is one of my favorite actors ever, because he's so good at bringing each character he plays, to life. Shane is my favorite character, so much that after he died, I would always wonder how he would approach certain situations that the group found themselves in.
This guy gives me young Grant Cardone energy 😂
This dude should be in every new movie and TV show coz he is intense as fuck and act with the best of them, but he too like Henry Cavill is being shadow banned from Hollywood for being too masculine, his estrogen count is not high enough to get him some roles.
All these femboys like Rami Malek and Timothee Chalamet getting all the spotlight 🤣🤣
HollyWeird...
Dumbest shit I have ever read...

After seeing John In twd. Then wind river, wolf of Wallstreet, fury...quickly became an actor I looked forward to watching. And such a seemingly humble dude.
Dude is too intense. These type of people are unpredictable. It’s no wonder that he’s killed someone in his past…
Lmao you'll be okay, bud.
He plays pretend for a living don't fall for it lol
Almost killed *
I thought it was a great show watching season one. After that it went south faster than Heroes.
I Need More Punisher!!
He’s mostly known for Shane Walsh
He really was a great punisher. Better than Thomas Jane from the film. He seems like a genuine decent man in real life. I'd let him pack my fudge without paying.
