They were influenced by grunge in the 90s. The Monster album and tour was much more guitar heavy. I saw them in North Carolina in 95. They sounded great.
This actually aired on television completely uncensored. I don't know if it was live or what the deal was but I recorded it on VHS. I watched it repeatedly. Not sure why this needs to be censored on CZcams. I miss my old VHS copy. I threw on the end of a tape I was archiving Simpsons episodes with.

I was a fan of REM from when Murmur came out in 1983... I was finally "old enough" to get to see tham on the Green tour. Imagine my disappointment when the screen att he start of the concert said something like "Do NOYT scream Raio Free Europe".... last damn dime of mine they got Oh, I'll still get their recordings, but they don't get dime from me. I would have written them off entirely, but they had Throwing Muses open up for them, and I'm grateful for that much.

i disagree, michael stipe is close friends with patti smith and both have been seen together often in and around ann arbor mi, and both are shy normal people that are embarrassed when given to much attention or special treatment,, which is way more than i can say for other musicians i have seen in public, lars ulrich are you listening ?
