Turkmenbashi/Saparmurat Niyazov almost built an ice palace in the middle of a desert, built only one hospital in the country in Ashgabat to make people go to the capital, renamed months after his family, and named a city after himself. He also made people read his book the Ruhnama, basically his book of opinions that all Turkmen had to agree with. If you want to drive, you had to pass a test about the Ruhnama. Did I mention he ALSO had a golden statue of himself that rotated so that it would ALWAYS face the Sun, to symbolize that his age was the golden age? Yeah, he was insane.
Slight correction: Gurbanguly actually isn't the President anymore. His son Serdar has been President since March 2022!

For real though, Slovenia doesn't feel like it's part of the Balkans.
Gurbanguly wasn't Niyazov's barber. Worse than that. He was his *DENTIST!* Yes, a dentist....a dentist becoming the leader is every child's worst nightmare. And as cool as that crater is, the Turkmenistan government currently wants to seal their number one tourist attraction because the gases the crater is releasing are quite poisonous for people living in nearby communities. The reason it was set on fire in the first place was to stop the release of poisonous gases.
Also, the Turkmen flag is incredibly based. The carpet pattern to the left of the flag is not just any carpet pattern, it's a design representing the five Turkmen tribes. From top to bottom they are the Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Arsary.

I actually lived in Turkmenistan. I was not a citizen but there as a diplomats kid for the state department. I was not in that specific area (I was at the capital Ashgabat). I do remember them taking down some traditional village to build a parking lot so yeah not a place you want to live in.

As someone born and raised in north-east of Croatia (Osijek) , i do not agree that is depressing there. It is beautiful city with so much to offer; extremly hot during summer. Would never change living there for coastal Croatia
