Taking the time to draw out my turns has been a huge tip. But at 8:07 you count out 7 seconds while playing in slow motion, by the time stamp it looks like JJF took 1.5 seconds to go to the top.
Why these videos only have a couple thousand views right now is beyond me. You guys explain thing so beautiful, I’m constantly getting “aha” moments listening to you. Thank you very much, Continue sharing your precious knowledge.
I don’t know if it’s the CZcams algorithms , but for some reason the channel doesn’t come up very often in the search under surf unless you actually type OMBE , ( unless you’ve already been frequently viewing the channel ) but I tell everybody I know , with an interest in surfing about the channel.
@@jamesshepard4743 Thanks a lot James. Dont forget to hit the notification bell. Thank you once again for helping us reach out to more surfers in need.
This is the best dissertation on surf skates, their purposes, proper uses technique and which set ups best serve those ends. I was swayed to go with a carver resin 31” CX solely on this video. There’s tons other videos out there, but most from a skateboarder’s perspective. Awesome video!
Just found your channel due to looking for information on surf skates. I like the talk about body movement that effect the boards ability to give the best ride, so much like Snowboarding which is our main focus. Great job!
Hey! How come that I ve just discovered your channel, amazed by the info you provide, big thanks 🙏. I was expecting some info about the Swelltech, was surprised you never tried it... I would be so grateful if you do and give your comments. I see it way different from the others, way more sensitive, responsive, fluid... Cheers, Roger, 46 "Intermediate to advanced surfer, probably advanced after watching all your videos in 2 days 😄"
Gold Coast long boards can be pumped (at least the 1 I tried). They are bushing based similar to the carver cx (so tighter than your yow, smoothstar or c7).
If / when you fall off the surf skate , try to shoulder roll and don’t stop your momentum , but roll or if you can slide it out . You can practice falling in the sand or grass , To get use to the body movement of the fall. You can also watch how pro skaters do it to see different techniques , but don’t put your hands out in front to break your fall. Love the channel guy’s, keep up the great work!!! 🤙🤙🤙
I got a cheap surfskate. I like it. Good to see if you will like the sport. The squeaky trucks remind me of seagulls skwawking and the loud wheels sound like waves rolling in. Lol but 3 days later i bought the job carver.
I've got a Carver C7, a Carver CX5, a waterbourne adapter, and a swelltech. The swelltech is my favorite for its insane range of motion which allows you to throw it up on rail really hard. That said, two tips: 1) don't get it as your first surfskate - it's VERY loose. 2) give up on the springs - when they break, just don't replace them. I replaced them a bunch of times before giving up, then rode it as an asym for about a week until the second spring broke, and haven't looked back since.
Wiv the school girl gigglin & the shorter guys use shorter decks chit chat, I think I may have found a new home! Awesome podcast full of GEMS. Lesh go 🔥
What about the length of the surfskate? A longer skt ,even with a c7 or smoothstar truck would reduced the wiggle factor and get back the flow feeling? I'm 90kg 1.80m high and probably will need a longer board .. I guess something 34"
Get a set of pads. Most important are the wrist shields. I use those on flat ground. In parks, being in my 60s, I use padded shorts because thats what really hurts when you fall on your hips or tail. A helmet and the rest of the pads are also not a bad idea when learning.
Have you guys used normal long boards in bowls, any thoughts? I’m a long term skateboarder and the normal long board in a bowl forces you to do everything you have been talking about. You can’t kick turn a long board and you have to pump long drawn out carves. Its a bit of a learning curve since you can’t just go back and forth like on a normal skateboard and need to get your lines right. You also need a roll in since you can’t drop in.
I’ve ridden my really long 46” sector nine in a big mellow kidney bean shaped bowl and a 36” a bit before. The smoothness and stability is awesome. Now I have a 31” Carver with the CX trucks. The wall ride is smooth and feels the same but the ability to turn tighter with the surf skate and pump more efficiently makes a significant difference for me.
John John can lean and draw out his turns because he is in massive waves. Can't really do it on small grovel waves that most of us have to surf most of the time. Or am I wrong?
I m 53 years old. And last year I wanted to start surfing, but because of corona, I had no chance to go to a surfers spot... therefor I started to surfskate... I fall down quite hard... but I moved on... to get some idea of balance I practiced a lot of movements that is possible with an surfskateboard... It helped me to get less fear of falling... and of course I started to whiggle... I beleave that our brain and our reflexes areis able to know
Are able to differentiate whenvI am standing on a surfskate or on a surfboard... therefore every practice on a surfskateboard is helpful... isn't it??? Nice video... thank you!!!
Great info. I’m enjoying my smoothstar for surf practice. Whatever is the banging/booming in the background is super distracting, especially listening with headphones!
You use the example of riding a bike: 1st on flat, then downhill, then mountain bike trails (offering more dimensions of movement) then say you can't learn compression/extension on flat surfaces. So, for somebody just starting out and wanting to avoid the wiggle, what would be the progression? (Carver C7 patiently waiting to be used) --- additionally --- the reason I'm asking is because I was just about to start taking the board out to start getting used to standing, moving and easy turns on, but I'd rather learn the right way, than try an unlearn the wrong!
Cris Mills tutorial is a good start. We collab with him to create our surf skate series. If you want to take you training further, we recommend you trying the accelerated surf program. Also you could join our surf hacks group on Facebook.
This wiggle thing… I hate that and I have a couple of surfer friends that do it constantly. I’m always teasing then to stop that dancing and start feeling the flow (generating speed in it), after using the foot to get speed
Although One could say that this generation is too tilted towards "equipment" as if the equipment made the artisan. I have seen people with "garbage" equipment do amazing things and have seen top of the line equipment and guys sucking! I have see cheap intruments being played wonderfully and expensive guitars sounding terrible. It think it is the ONE USING the equipment and not the equipment on and of itself which makes One great at a skill. My point is, I choose not to focus so much on equipment and work with what I have, until that point were IN FACT equipment comes as an extra to keep on advancing skill, but that is well ahead on the Road. Just a thought. Thanks!
Love these videos guys but the constant interuptions to read unrelated comments is driving me crazy🤪. Hard to watch the whole video and discussion all the way through.
love you guys but as a skateboarder who also surfs, i cringe every time i hear yall say "surf skate" - a regular skateboard with loose trucks operates essentially identically to a surfboard mechanically! bowl skating with loose trucks is all the "surf skating" you need imo...
pps - if you want to simulate blowing the fins out of the water, you need hard wheels e.g. spitfire formula fours then you can powerslide just like a surfboard

bushings can be replaced or add wax to the bushings to get rid of the squeeky noise.

If anyone is looking for a smoothstar. I was able to get a smoothstar last week from sharp eye surfboard in south tweed

The slower your going you have to be faster and lighter , definitely can’t draw turns out like in bigger solid surf for sure
