We used to fly to the Caribbean a great deal with my parents in the 1960s through the 1990s. The livery on this plane looks awfully familiar. I'm pretty sure I flew on one or more of these CARIBAIR planes. I remember getting on and off many of these using the air stairs in the back. What a time to be alive. Everything is dystopian now. The 727s had the air stairs as well.
Great post. You flew and lived during the Golden Years of The Jet Age! There have always been troubled times throughout human history, but at least back in the 1960s-1970s you knew where you stood in relation to the situation around you. Not so today. Even during my childhood during the 1970s-early 1980s, things made relative sense! I'd gladly go back to that time and live as an adult, at least in most of the western world it was the best of times from the 1950s-1980s.
when i was 9 years old we flew to PR on Eastern, and the on to St Thomas on Caribair, we boarded thru the rear air stairs, for a day trip with my family..i remember the airport on St Thomas was tiny and mountains on one end, and the ocean on the other...we did a static take off and nearly went straight up to avoid the mountains...quite the thrill when you are 9 years old!
Allec gave me a misdirect on this one! Seeing the pilots' names made me think there would be fatalities, at least in the cockpit, until I realized that the accident predated some of the privacy practices in place today. Great video, Allec! You always give us a clear picture without overloading us with data.
Unparalleled UTube Channel! I really enjoy watching, not so much the horrific crashes, what led up to the Disaster. Keep up the GOOD WORK that you are presenting to us, your subscribers! God Bless You and Yours Take Care and Stay Safe! As Always, I remain, with warmest regards, Most Sincerely, MICHAEL! Former United States Army Military Police Officer as well as a former Certified Chief-of-Police in the Great State of Georgia. I sought Justice not INJUSTICE!!! Bye 4 now My Man! Take it light!!!❤🎉
Mr. Allec, I always enjoy it when you occasionally feature these air crashes of yesteryear, so many of us are not familiar with them and I really enjoy learning about them. Fortunately, where this one is concerned no lives were lost though one person did have to have a leg amputated and some others received some injuries atleast no lives were lost. Thank you for bringing this story to us.
Another great video! Some of these are getting pretty old nowadays. The -30 series DC-9 was a pretty solid smaller airliner, and it's interesting to compare the growth of the basic DC-9 into the later versions, not just the longer fuselages but the changes to the wings as well..
On top of the conditions that made for ineffective braking, STT until the mid-70s had a much shorter runway (4650' as opposed to today's 7000' ) so if you did not land pretty much "right on the numbers" in less-than-ideal circumstances, you did not have much room to bargain with. Two other overrun crashes (one a botched go-around), with fatalities, would happen by 1976 before the field was extended with added fill and a new longer runway laid down. (Not just this airplane, but Caribair-PR itself, was acquired by Eastern in 1973)
Maybe St Thomas is too small to be able to have its runway situated anywhere else, but I question the logic of siting a runway in an area which is meant to flood (or known to flood)
Sometimes, ‘minimum requirements’ don’t seem adequate. Hard to believe that no other flight had encountered this situation previously and it took an accident to rectify it.
Great video. Those landing strips in the Caribbean were pretty treacherous back in those days, Saint Martin had a mountain at the end of their runway, and the landing strip in Virgin Gorda was a dirt road off a cliff into the ocean.
I was jump-seat passenger in what was likely a Piper PA-31 series Chieftain or Navajo "puddle jumper" plane in the late 1970s. As we approached Virgin Gorda from Tortola, which had many fewer houses on it at the time, I asked the pilot if we were landing on "that oxcart path" of a dirt runway that we were approaching. He said "hold on" as we executed a steep approach and a perfect landing, but felt very much like driving on a washboard. I just looked at Google Earth and it is still exactly the same as it was the 1970s. A short dirt and sand runway.
Allec, great Truman airport story, but how about the tragic incident of American Airlines Flight 625, a Boeing 727-100, crashed at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on April 27, 1976, a tragic and horrific crash as the pilots tried to go around but the 727 engines took way to long to spool up....
@SteviPantyhose-mt5lm you are so sad liking your own comments *edit I don't know who liked my comment but it was probably him liking my comment to make it looked like I liked my own. Not me I swear.

It is amazing how many airlines have acquired the same aircraft over the years.
Same. Also how many thousands of hours and thousands of takeoff/landing cycles before being scrapped.
Every buyer thinks it's a good one to buy while every seller thinks it's time to get rid of it. They can't both be right.

You must remember the sound of the engines on full thrust at that time...wonderful sounds from turbojet engines of the time!

No fiesta on that jet on this day
For some reason I always feel bad when its mentioned that a plane was scrapped

Upsetting to see all these plane crashes, but he tries our best to recreate them for the air crash memories!

Nice old school livery design, from a carrier I'd not seen before !
Great work as always Alec.
How's your pilot training doing ?

Keep up the good work! Hopefully, you’ll do China Airlines Flight 611.
@SteviPantyhose-mt5lmwhat do you mean
@@red-trinity7390 Don’t worry he’s gone now.
Thanks for posting. I don't recall this one getting much attention in our media except the day the mishap happened. Great when all survive.
Well the ole jet got hurt came back and done its job!

Landing in St. Thomas can be kinda challenging. Thanks for the video, you always do such great work.

Nice video as always! Thanks Allec!
I like the new recent thumbnails in your videos
Dankje
love the piano - brilliant
I'm wondering why reverse thrust and spoilers weren't enough to stop the plane...
I was wondering the same thing. I wouldn’t think that a “wet runway” would be that big of a deal.
Make that 3 of us. I've had flights that it was pouring, it did take longer, but there was runway left. 🛬
At the time STT had a much shorter runway so if you did not land "on the numbers" you did not have much or any margin.
Nostalgiaaaa
Nice....older crashes and not the famous ones. Maybe do some of the Philippines crashes?

Thank you
for?
CARIBAIR had DC- 3 and later CONVAIRS with recip. engines. Never had DC-9.
That poor plane...
Another wonderful presentation, all survived. And then the aircraft was torn apart....how sad.....
Id give a leg to fly on Caribair....😢
Mr. Joshua-Ibay, please do a video on United Flight 855.
How did the thrust reversers not dramatically slow the plane.? They do not depend on surface runway friction or contact.
👍
Next makes the tragedy of Air France flight 139
Great work! Could you do Cebu Pacific flight 387 soon?
@SteviPantyhose-mt5lm why you reply?

Frustrating that I can’t read that horrible white text , other than that a good video .
