  • Special thanks to John Gunstad, professor with the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University, for speaking with us about his cutting-edge research on how losing weight affects brain function.
Following is the transcript of the video:
Here’s what losing weight does to your body and brain.
During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to.
So losing additional weight will become harder.
Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream.
This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin.
Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat.
The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal.
However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run.
Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints.
Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function.
Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months.
Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight.
The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity.
So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out - like anything else - losing weight can get easier with practice.

I've lost 25lb over the summer, just walking every day, lifting weights and trying not to eat as much. It's surprisingly easy to keep the routine going once you get through the first few weeks. Once you start seeing results, you'll start doing more and more just from the positive results and how you feel. At 31, I'm the lightest I've been since I was 17! Interestingly, as I continue to lose weight, friends of mine are finding it! Lol

I started riding a bicycle because my doctor told me I had high blood pressure. My intention was not to lose weight but get my blood pressure under control. I lost 45 lbs in 4 months without trying just by riding a bicycle 150 feet to the end of the street and back. I never changed what I was eating. I now ride a bicycle 28 miles every day and I have 1,300+ consecutive days of riding. I don't do it to lose weight, I do it to not lose the fitness that I have. You can find videos of how I started on my user page and also my name without the space on strava.

I've lost 50 pounds over the last four months, and like the video stated, it was easy at first. The pounds literally just melted away, all I would do is walk or jog for an hour 4-5 days a week and have one meal. I was incredulous at the results and berated myself for not starting to lose weight sooner. It seemed so easy, I was highly motivated and had minimal cravings. At around 30 pounds lost, I felt like I hit a plateau, the weight loss slowed, and the cravings(especially late at night) came back in full force. After relapsing I doubled down and made it to losing 40 pounds, but the cravings came back even more intensely, after struggling with that for a while, I pushed on and reached the 50 pound milestone. I still get intense cravings, and it's really hard, but this video helps me understand why and puts things into perspective. Thanks.

    • @grolfe3210
      @grolfe3210 Před 2 lety +29

Not mentioned is that if you lose 50 pounds and then walk the same distance as you did when you were 50 pounds heavier, you will burn up far fewer calories! Same as a small car uses less gas to go the same distance as a big one. So you do need to keep pushing at it. But then if you walked an hour the new 50lb lighter you can jog for an hour? Ramp it up.
You mention cravings. Is this for a particular food or is it basically that you are hungry?
You need to accept that where you were before the weight loss was not right and that you need to make permeant changes beyond denying yourself food and jogging.
One meal a day is mad! You should easily be able to have 3 decent meals per day and still lose weight. If you are just eating one meal of junk food instead of 3 meals of junk food then you have not fixed things properly. Good whole food. Cut out Alcohol, all sugar, and really reduce fat. Dairy is a bad habit too. Good whole carbs are fine, mostly it is the sugar or fat added to them that is the problem. Eat raw food rather than cooked, whole rather than liquified and make everything rather than buying anything ready made. Learn what is in food. Eat you meals at a table while doing nothing else, enjoy your food. Enjoy burning it off however you do it.

For me the tricks to losing and keeping off weight:
-Do small changes gradually: this is a marathon, not a sprint. Do slight adjustments every day means they could be maintained over time.
-Eat a little less than I burn: only eat till I'm not hungry, not till I'm full.
-Befriend slight hunger: be a bit hungry for awhile before I eat. Like intermittent fasting, but not as extreme.
-Reduce sugar intake: I pretty much cut out soft drink, though still eat chocolate once in awhile.
-Use belly fat as a gauge: if I squeeze my belly, and there's still some fat, I could eat a little less.
-Exercise everyday: does not need to be overboard, even a few minutes every day is good.

i dont think you have to fast as much as i did but man i used to fast SO HARD i never got past 1.6k calories a day for abour 1-2 months(well yes sometimes i did but only for a few days) at the end i got from 87 kg to 73 kg. Yes i got some cons like low energy. Later on i never got past 73. I had GREAT appetite and couldnt keep myself from eating
High calorie food like i did before and i got to 77 before that appetite stopped. Im now at 74 and its very stabilized i never go above. I put myself a weight limit. It helps more than you think. Two things i saw changed. I was a lot more lighter when running and my endurance skyrocketted( maybe thats because i go to cycle with my dad for long distances,go play with my friends a lot and im a quite active guy. But it was never like this. Before i could ran for 1.5 hours when playing football but now i can easily play for more than 3 hours.). Im 1.68 cm tall

Its good that you are trying. But pro tip: get a routine. A boring routine. Body becomes fat after the hormones go awry. And the hormones go awry when our cycadian rythm is disrupted. Turns out our endocrine system regulates our mood and cravings, which is only regulated by a proper sleep cycle. Work with ur cycadian rythm. Wake up an hour before sunrise. Go to sleep within an hour of sunset. In the meanwhile, make sure you take out 40 mins for some sort of physical activity: some cardio, some zumba, some planks. Preferable if it is done early morning after having an apple.
Everything will fall back into right place if you make sure to wake up early morning. Just switch your binge-watching personal time from late night to early morning. That will get you on the right track.

I did research that whole day on diet planning, workout routines, then planned out how to check progress. I started on June first of 2020, about 3- 4 months later I lost 40 pounds from following the plan and watching guys on CZcams. I started at 245 now a year later I’m 200-205 lbs I keep fluctuating. Goal weight I am shooting for is 190 lbs. The hardest part of this journey is to stay consistent and fight the cravings of wanting sweets and fatty foods. I started my weight loss journey at about 16 years old. I am barely 19. I have been on and off because of life just happening, and I’ve lost 63 pounds so far. I started at 230, weight is 167 now. Current goal is 150. I am 5’2, so my height and weight combined made me feel like trash. I’ve dealt with depression and just a very long list of mental illness diagnosis as well as intensive therapy since I was 10. In the last 2 years I’ve been on a very steady journey. One thing I learned is that overeating makes me feel terribly nauseous and sick, to identify when it is time to stop. Doing it all the time made me feel miserable but I would keep going because I love LOVE food and have a binge eating disorder, so my lifestyle changes and some other mental BS I had to process gave me some handle on it and it’s pretty much under control right now! When I would go up the stairs I needed at minimum two minutes to catch a breather before I could talk properly. Now I can go up and down like it’s nothing. Not even after going up and down 10 times. My joint pain has lessened. I’ve realized how great working out consistently makes me feel. I have burn out sometimes like any normal person and shit is still tough, but I’d be lying if I said I want to stop completely. I look forward to doing it now. This journey has taught me soooo much about myself and my want to treat my body right; even to love myself when I hate it most and to recognize how hard it works for me. I crave vegetables now. It is some major rewiring. It doesn’t make everything perfect but it sure helps. It’s just insane.

I lost 36lbs (16.3kg) this year, hopefully 40lbs by the end of this month. Only about 5 months of actually being on a diet. If you hit a plateau, I think the trick is to take a break from your diet but don't eat beyond your calculated metabolic rate. I took a break in my diet from June - Sept and did not gain any weight, and when I continued the diet in Oct, I started to lose weight quickly again. You'll get hard cravings and feel almost sick the first week of starting your diet, like a brain fog. After that it will subside.
Make 1 day a week cheat day to keep your metabolism in check. Cut out sugar and refined carbs from your diet. Eat about 1500 calories a day. You'll lose weight even sitting at a desk. Make water your new favourite drink (or tea or coffee - with stevia, not sugar). Caffeine is good because stimulants reduce your appetite.

Millions of people who wish they could be like you in losing that much weight!
While your experience Is true for you, it doesn’t spread a helpful message to people who want to lose weight.
The reasons you feel worthless and empty have nothing to do with your weight, they have to do with your thoughts, beliefs, and patterns in your self talk. I know this sounds preachy. A comment like yours makes me want to give you words of encouragement to keep going, analyze your values and behaviors, make adjustments, have hope that things can and will get better if you make small changes to your programming, and make it happen for yourself. I use to have man boobs and flappy arms which looked terrible in any shirt I put on, now I have a flat chest and toned arms love wearing shirts and jerseys everyday. I’m 260 Lbs, and I’m struggling to stay motivated. (Cliche I know.) but I’m aiming to lose 80Lbs within a year. I’m just wondering if there’s any psychological tricks to stay motivated, and what was it that kept you motivated.

    • @mattkay7334
      @mattkay7334 Před 6 lety +14

I found that you can only stay motivated if it comes from yourself. You are the only person that will always be able to keep yourself accountable. It is different for everyone, but what finally gave me the motivation to lose weight was when I realized how much weight I had gained in 2016. When I was big, I didn't care what my weight was, but seeing in retrospect how quickly I was gaining weight, it scared me and still scares me.
You have to figure out at what point enough is enough. At what point do you decide that whatever habit you have, be it too many calories or not enough physical activity or both, has gone to far and has to stop.
It really isn't easy, but if you find a way of eating and exercising that works for you, it can be done. That's what I had to do, is make my own plan/diet, because all the diet out there aren't custom enough for most people, and don't take into account your specific needs and challenges, but you can.
If I can do it, anyone can, I'm just some regular guy that stopped eating so much junk food and started exercising and eating right.

Lol, guess it wouldn’t hurt starting now though. Thanks for the reply! Now lets all hope we can stick to these New Year resolutions.

Five things I’ve learnt since losing 190lbs. 1. There is never and end. I’ll always have to watch what I eat. I’ll always have to exercise to maintain the weight loss. 2. The moment I hit my goal weight there was no fanfare. No parade. No joyous celebration. No one actually gives a shit that you lost the weight. They only tell you if you start to regain or if you eat something they think is not “diet” approved. 3. Don’t expect the weight loss to fix you. It’s just fat. Losing it won’t make a difference to your happiness even if your unhappiness revolved around your weight. 4. Being at a healthy weight won’t mean you are healthy. It will just mean that doctors now don’t have a reason to blame your ailments on your weight. 5. Being obese doesn’t make you unlovable to others it just makes you unloveable to yourself. Love you now to want to be a better human not have a better body.
