I had a 2016 S1000XR. My absolute favorite bike. I traded for a 2020 R1250GSA because I need my drivers license. The XR is an absolute blast. I did multiple 400 miles + day trips without any problems. Wish I had Diplomatic immunity and no worries about loosing my license.
Wasn't it fast enough to keep your license? 😆
@@chadkline4268))
Not even a week of owning my xr I got speeding ticket doing 120mph but it's in the middle of nowhere without cars and people around so I got away with just a speeding ticket instead of reckless driving 😂
Great looking bike. Did you experience handlebar vibrations at any particular rpm/speed combinations?
Got off r1 balls hurt. Got s1000xr and no more pain
First time I am coming across a person who actually gives the figures both in metric system and the nonsense system.. You sir, got yourself a subscriber
😂😂😂😂😂 nonsense system. Hilarious!
I cannot BELIEVE how thorough and useful this guy is. The review covered every single lingering question I had about the XR, the concept, the ride, and the alternatives. Simple, not over-produced, and solid. Subscribed!
Yeah, i would love to see someone like him cover smaller motorcycles. He is a big bike specialist :)
That's funny!
Mine is less than a month. 2022 triple black. I cant stop riding and so addicting. I’m 6’0 185lbs and the seat is comfortable. Love the bike!
Is the XR happy cruising and any uncomfortable vibes you’ve noticed…thanks and safe miles🙌
This is one of the most reasonable , unbiased , professional reviews.
Some comments to your thorough review :)
1) I have it 2020 MY and front blinkers are full modern LED (EU version)
2) M endurance chain is supposed to be maintenance free not higher mileage (anyway somewhere about 20-25kkm will have to replace)
3) seat is indeed quite hard so if you are a tall rider I recommend to change to comfort seat (860mm vs 840mm standard) and you get extra 20 mm of foam that makes a significant difference (I did compare both in real life riding)
I have the S1000R Sport 2022 model which has the identical engine and all the same electronics on it , as it is 199 kgs wet some 27 kgs lighter than the S1000XR with the same engine performance it is exhilarating to ride. Dynamic Pro mode allows you to adjust all settings to your personal needs whilst at the the same time allowing the exhaust valve to open to produce pops'n'crackles downshifting which brings a smile to my face every time. Both the S1000R and S1000XR are excellent bikes.
I have the 2019 model, i bought it new in may 2020. Yesterday i got it back from the dealer after it's 60 000 kms service. I got a GS for the two days and was so happy to get back on my XR. For pure road use, even big miles, it is a so much better bike (for me). It is like the Porsche 911, a sports bike fit for everyday use. (The GS being the Land Rover Defender in this comparison)
very well said.
discovery vs 911
Glorious - I have that exact same bike with the M Package. I just bought it a few weeks ago, with all the luggage (top case, side cases). I fitted an MRA windscreen, SW-Motech Pro Tank Bag and M Sport foot controls also. This bike is the best bike I have ever riden or owned - it is an awesome, exhilarating machine. Smooth and planted, It absolutely rips around the corners and is highly predictable - does exactly what you want it to do.
Oddly, one of the main reasons I like this bike in terms of comfort, is the seat. I think it is super comfortable and supportive, despite its firmness.
I randomly jumped on a demo with one of these at Americade this year when the bike I wanted to ride wasn't available. This isn't the kind of bike I usually gravitate toward, but I was blown away TBH. One of the best bikes I have ever demoed and certainly the most fun for twisty road riding with basically the perfect blend of comfort, performance, and handling. Really a top-notch machine.
The sound and power are the reasons I will never buy an inline 4 engine bike again. It’s just not compatible with my drivers license, but what a bike indeed. Great review as always.
Too much power? No such thing.
@@elonmust7470 Not too much power, boring at reasonable speeds. All the fun is at high speeds, high rpm. I prefer low down grunt that you can use all the time without risking your license.
@@Speedytrip And that's boring....
this guy s diction is perfect. no stuttering not aaaa ing. clear and loud letters. its a pleasure to listen to him. i love the fact that he shows the riding position as well... Thank you for such a detailed video.
“Oh no! Rocks, rocks, rocks! Please forgive me BMW for taking this beautiful bike on these rocks” ROFLMAO!!!! Man, this was the funniest segment of any of your videos…maybe all of them combined. I was laughing my butt off! Thank you, sir, for making my day (and for the stellar review, as always)!
I have a 2021 S1000XR M Package, low suspension and seat. It's a BEAST!!! Solo Cross Country and back, in June.6300 Miles. Spectacular! Bike performed amazingly day after day. Best bike I've ever ride hands down. Thanks for the video, good stuff! TK
How tall are you?
@@winner1338 5'10" 170 lbs
@@thomasshields856 Does your both feet touch the ground?
The ultimate motorcycle for me. People say that an adventure bike is a Swiss army knife but i disagree. This is the perfect do it all bike. Track racing, road racing long days in the highway, 2 up with luggage touring and even off road. Dream bike for me if i ever find the money to replace my 2015 v strom 1000.
There’s nothing about this bike that justifies “off-roading”. Not the character of the engine, the transmission, the suspension, nothing. I’ve ridden a previous model and it’s just a tall sport bike with tremendous brakes and excellent performance. The engine is screaming like a 1000cc sport bike at high rpm’s and that’s exactly the rpm range that this bike is happy. That makes it more of a track bike than anything else. For sport touring you need something like a torque monster (Hayabusa, ZX14, GTR1400, FJR1300, etc) that allows you to ride in one-two lower gears than optimal and still cruise around, for off-roading you need something like a T7 or AT, KTM 790, etc with off-road suspension, 2 cylinders for better traction, and relatively lightweight to manhandle it when the path becomes more sketchy. The XR is none of that.

Κάνε το ένα test ride και θα δεις ότι ο χαρακτήρας του δεν είναι ούτε καν για sport touring. Στην ουσία είναι ένα S1000RR, ψηλωμένο και με όρθια θέση οδήγησης.
Awesome video. I do have to comment on the audio as well, you manage to find great tracks to start and finish the videos. Good job.
Another great review. When i was shopping for a new bike and went to my region BMW dealer, i was looking for a XR at the time. I had a V-Strom 1000 at the time and was looking for a more sport touring bike. However, the dealer conviced me on a R 1200 GS Rally. I don't regret the decision, because for my use, the GS really is a "do it all" bike. It's not great in every thing, but it is very good for most of it. Also, here in Brazil the GS hold's a better market value, should i consider to sell it. But the XR still is a consumer desire for me. I like de videos of the Cuban Rider, who has and early XR and really exercise the qualities of the bike. Thank's for the review, i enjoy it! 😉👍👍👍
As another one of your viewers pointed out, I also watched Cuban Rider absolutely fly on one of these a few years back, both in the twisty mountain roads and on the race track. Its all the sport bike I'd ever need and dreamed of having one for some time. Obviously you need the skills and the respect to ride this monster but how sweet is that motor.... so nice!
I have an S1000R and test rode the XR at a BMW Demo Day. You are correct that the best part of the rev range takes you way over the speed limit and the bike makes you want to ride fast. The bike is relatively tame below 7000 RPM, which makes it accessible. I don't recommend the XR as a long-range tourer because only a small percentage of tour riding occurs at 100 mph plus. Also, comfort matters more than top-notch performance when touring. If you never ride offroad this is a top-notch do-everything road bike. Another great review! Thank you!
My preformed great for a very long tour (12k miles around the U.S.) It is not great on gas mileage, but I never had to break into my backup fuel during the trip. A shaft drive would be better for touring.
For actual touring, I used cruise control 90% of the time. For anything remotely twisty, I really had to hope I did not lose my license. 😀
The XR and GS are very different bikes. The XR is not meant as an off road motorcycle. The XR is 80% sports and 20% tourer. If you want to ride in comfort all day long with the better half on the back then the GS is your bike. If you want performance and the thrill of those challenging twisters (and you don't value your licence too much) then the XR.
This is the first vid i've found of yours, but wow man... you really delivered a comprehensive and well articulated review of this bike. Thank you for sharing your insight.
The "comfort" part of the equation of the XR is the riding position. The foot pegs are straight down, the handlebar is wide and positioned as on a standard street bike. You are sitting nearly upright, not leaning forward with half your weight on your wrists. My personal issue is I'm 6'4", I need a higher windshield and a better seat for long term riding. After finishing a 150 mile ride yesterday, my butt was most uncomfortable. I took a couple of short breaks during the ride, but I'm getting a different saddle ASAP. Other than that, I absolutely love this bike. I find myself laughing and whooping out loud as I ride because it's simply exhilarating. The straight line acceleration is amazing and the way you can flip it through the curves is awesome. I've been riding bikes since I was 14 and I'll be 75 in a couple of weeks, I've had everything but a Ducati and this is the most fun I've ever had, period..... My next bike will be the 2024 M1000XR if I live that long. (I would like to ride a Multistrada Pikes Peak, but $35K+, I don't think so)
The pikes peak in my opinion is way too pricey
M XR should be well worth the money
God bless you for taking it off road, I got an ulcer just watching that. Looks like a fun road bike and a lot of points on the license!

The XR is none of that
A very thorough and balanced review, thanks for this. I was very curious about this bike. 😀
Please give this a thumbs up and a comment. My man puts soooooo much time and effort into these and we all benefit. He takes probably 10 hours to fully create, edit, publish, it takes us 10 seconds to pay him back with a thumbs up and a comment. Viva BIG ROCK MOTO!
Great review. Got a 2016 and ridiculously good. Baron von grumble has a great review of it too with slightly more hysterical chuckling.
Great road bike...the absolute best...but I turn around too when the going gets only slightly gnarly.
I think it’s s a gorgeous machine, especially with the M package. Imposing and exhilarating , you look great on it Ian! Your videos are nicely edited and filmed. All class bike and channel!
excellent review. Thank you. I've been looking at this bike for a while now and now waiting to see the 170 hp 2024 version before I make a decision.
I got the 21 XR. With the sport package... It's a beast.. fun... Not for off-road.. the oil pan is way way way too low.. fine for a groomed road and done gravel, but nothing else..
I go back and forth about having an XR, RT, or k1600GT... they are awesome... No bike is perfect, right now my XR does the truck for me till warrenty runs out.
Probably the most comprehensive review I've seen on this bike. New subscriber here.
Hi Ian, keep up the great work. It’s fantastic to see your channels growth!
Just watched your 1200GT Pro review before this one. Congrats on growing an inch this past month! 😉
Thanks for doing stuff you don’t suggest us do! Nice work!
What a bike! At 45 I’m still not mature enough to own that powerful of a bike. 😆
My dual sports are fast enough for now but an adventure bike is in the future. Thinking Norden or 890 adventure.
Thanks again.
It is good to see you having so much fun Ian. I have no great love for BMWs, but that is a superb bike that I wouldn't mind owning. Very nice and a great review. Thanks.
Some other bikes of this ilk might be good too as, whilst I am more dirt orientated, where I currently live, it would be both rare and difficult to find anything that is not asphalt.
That 1200 Triumph was a peach too.
I remember, test drove the 2014: got up to 140mph on the 2 freeway (near Glendale CA) in a few seconds; insane engine, . The engine sounded and felt angry. Challenging you to keep pushing it! Unreal; what a beast. Maybe in the future (BMW reliability abs cost of maintenance) push me back. And the speed of thing, tickets in the near future
Great review over all.
You need some practice with this monster 😀
I have 2016 1.Gen full carbon and i m in love.....
Please do some more videos like this 👍
Really nice review! Looking forward f900xr review!
Great video! Thanks for being thorough
Thanks for another fun review! Very in depth and fun to watch.
Great vid Ian, thanks 👍
Great Review Ian, thank you for the comments on the speed, wow that is fast!
This is more of a tall sportbike like a Multistrada Pikes Peak, instead of the V4S. Maybe BMW is missing a trick by not making a GS version of this platform for riders who spend most of their time on tarmac while still wanting to go on dirt and light sand trails.
Maybe 1300 GS is gonna make Tarmac riders happy
I’d buy one.
If the rumors are true we’re in for a treat from BMW. There are, allegedly, two version of the new GS(A) coming. One more road focused and the other more off-road focused. They should come in 1400cc and 1300cc respectively. I can see them having similar options to the new Tiger 1200. And they are, again allegedly, coming with an automatic/semi-automatic option similar to Honda’s DCT transmission. I never had a BMW, but I’m excited for what’s coming. The bar (and unfortunately the entry price) on the Big ADV market is getting really high.
You have the 1250 GS (not GSA) for only tarmac.
That’s the gs though.. mainly a street bike that can go off road too
I was returning from Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia after going to MotoGP. Good old Google Maps took me off the the main road near Tamworth, NSW. I was travelling back to Queensland. Ended up on a dirt road on my fully loaded, K1300S. Fractured a brand new rear tyre and had to fill up air at petrol stations all the way back to Tamworth and buy, yet again a new rear tyre. The joys of motorcycle :)
Been watching videos on the XR for a couple years, ended buying this exact bike in the 23’ M package based on this video without a test ride and it’s better than anticipated!
You'll be very happy. I sold my RR because I missed the XR so much. Ride safe my friend.
Very good video. Excellent information. I have a 2015 XR 1000. It does have a bit of vibration, but most of it was cured with those handlebar weights. Incredibly fun to ride, very fast and handles like an absolute demon. I keep thinking I’m going to sell it and then I take it for one last ride, then I can’t sell it.
I love your reviews. Outstanding videography and an excellent format for reviewing. You live in a beautiful area. Perfect for riding almost any style.
Ha! Love it. I've been following your ADV bike reviews for a while but I own an XR. Glad you enjoyed it and hat off to you to dare to take it off pavement! They are formidable bikes!
I normally hate when people take street bikes through dirt "just for testing" but this bike is SO mismatched that it was fun to watch :D Great review, AS always. I love that you don't blur speedo like all these other weenies. Utah is still a free state baby!
Is he in Utah? I thought he is in Colorado. Or are you in Utah? Ride safe my friend.
He’s in California.
Jack Mormon?
Great review on an awesome bike. Getting one soon. Thank You
My brother. What a phenomenal video, thanks for the effort, it’s appreciated
Great video as usual. I really appreciate the conversions to metric units for those of us not in the states. Crazy bike indeed! Loved every minute of this review.
Great review, thank you!!.......greetings from South Africa!
I am currently heading back home on my 2020 S1000xr after touring Norway all the way to Nordkapp . I have completed 7500km together with my better half as pillion so we are fully loaded with Bmw side and top cases . I have done tours with CBR1000f , Hayabusa , Bmw Rs1200 and by far the S1000xr is the best tourer and sportiest I have ridden . Only changes I had done to bike is the seat which I had redone in memory foam .
My longest day was through Finland over 800 km in a 10 hr period and we were both fine the next day 🤪
Thanks! I just bought a 23 XR M sport and love it! Really great review! Helped me so much with my buying decision
Thank you!
Hi Ian, love your honest in-depth reviews even on bikes which are not built for me.
At the age of 67 I‘m looking for something lighter after 3 GSes. I‘ve already tested the Aprilia Tuareg 660 on a weekend ride and it’s soo easy to handle which I liked. But I didn’t try the drop test (I wasn’t the owner). CZcams Testers complain a lot about the engine‘s heat - it bothered me not too much, honestly.
Do you intend to ride and test this bike someday??
Best regards, Peter 🇦🇹
Great review, looking forward to f900xr review.
Thanks for that excellent review Rock Moto, planning to have one. Ride safe & Drive safe 😊👌
Great review... I sold my 1050 vSTROM and bought the XR for all the reasons that its an entertaining ride. I sometimes think I should have kept the vStrom for those days when you don't want to risk shredding the license. The problem is the adrenalin addiction that comes with the XR, it is as you said very easy to ride fast. I recently bought a Tuono V4 1100 Factory to try and satisfy my new addiction. I am now conflicted as to which bike to ride. The XR is comfortable and easy, the Tuono has a sublime soundtrack and is also a lot of fun (just a little more crazy). I also have an older GS... it sits under the cover, not sure when I will ride it again. If I could only have one bike, I would struggle with the decision but it would probably be the XR.. Conflicted is me!
Same problem. Once you ride something like a Hayabusa, with a 1340cc engine, all you want is that engine. Every other engine feels like crap after that. I think Suzuki should put the 1340cc (relatively long stroke engine) of the Hayabusa into an ADV bike. Who cares if it's too much power. Customers would buy it, because it would be very reliable, and there are tons of parts, TONS of parts available, which is perfect for ADV riders. OR HOW ABOUT, they cut the Hayabusa engine in half, and make it a 670cc paralell twin with 90hp and 57 ft lbs of torque. Use the same pistons, and titanium valves, and clutch, so people can buy Hayabusa parts for their engine, if they break something. I feel like these companies have no idea how to sell motorcycles, I could do a better job marketing Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha. They seem to have no idea what customers actually want.
hands down the best motorcycle reviewer out there, what a gift this guy is
Saw a new red one with all three cases in a parking garage in Skokie, Illinois today. What a beautiful machine
Nice work, thank you.
As many have already pointed out, one of the best, informative reviewers on the tube..appreciate the efforts. Bob Ross of reviewers..ride safe!
Great assessment,thks.
I own this bike--this review is spot on: for better or worse. I love it.
I have a 2020 S1000XR bought it after watching Cuban Rider videos. Your review is spot on, the only thing I don’t like about it is the seat, I upgraded into the M seat and still was not comfortable, still looking for ore cushion… Impressive review, excellent editing, you got a new subscriber! Thank you!
thanks! I've seen his videos too

After twisting the throttle wide open a bunch of times, I came to a decision that I could never own a bike that accelerated so well, where you are essentially teleporting ahead up the road in an instant. I'd lose my license very quickly as I could not stop myself from constantly twisting the throttle wide open and into warp speed mode - as much as I'd absolutely love to ride a bike like this, I know that I cannot allow myself the temptation......Looks like you were subsumed by the wonderfulness of insane power - cheers!
Is a firmer 1984 Kawasaki GPZ 750 owner ( loved that bike, just right! ) I couldn’t agree with you more. Great, great, great comment! Happy touring!
@@dennisossianderrmplmtcst2053 had that GPz from ‘87 to 2009, when I got bit by the ADV bug and sold it to a guy who digs old bikes. It was an awesome bike, and I never got sick of ripping round onnit
@@jokermtb thanks for your note back, I really appreciate it. That’s really quite amazing and awesome! Well done! It sounds like your bike will have a good life with its new owner, as well. Congratulations!
What a bunch of BS.
This thing is cream… I never liked it because its too loud and the torque comes only at very high revs.. but now, after your clip.. I think I should probably try it for a serious ride.. could be THE ONE for me.. who knows.. I drive a very unbeaten bike (I try alot of bikes, but non could compare to mine): A Hypermotard 821 SP. But all bikers know, there are so many, many cool bikes out there… aaaaarghh..!!!
The Dream Bike..have best of each category 👌,strange bike, Must take it first for test ride, and it will guide you to which category you want to be..sport,super sport,tourer,Adventure,..🙂..another fantastic review..much thank,XR is a piece of fine art..
Very nice and useful review!!!
Only ONE thing I want ppl to be aware of, that you & BMW missed/forgot? If the switches were BACKLIT, that would have been "X"tremely awesome, because the XR is so much FUN, the "adventure" may not end at dusk🥰. Very accurate review. Thank you for doing such a good job for us(he even went off road, ya'll 👍🏽). I own a 2023(since Father's Day, '23), and I can tell you, this review is spot on! Listen to this man, and respect this machine, and you'll do fine. She is definitely, a keeper. -👌
Do you have more leg room(stretch) on the XR Vs the GSA 1250 r ... great content
Super cool review as usual. How bad are the vibes though? thanks
Great in-depth review. I’ve put nearly 12,000 miles on my 2021 XR M Sport model and everything you said is spot on. I also owned a GS for 2 years and that bike was great but the XR is thrilling to ride and is the best of the dozen or so motorcycles I’ve owned over the years. I would say my MPG has improved over time, pretty much average 45 mpg every ride unless you’re in stop and go traffic which this bike can do just fine, clutch is vey light but engine can get pretty hot on warm days. If you’re purely a street/touring rider you’ll never get bored with this motorcycle!
Well said
Great review - as always. Confirmed that I’m perfectly fine with my GSA. :)
Another great review
Great review. My sole experience with the XR was in '15, and the vibrations in the bars was simply ridiculous. I'd be interested to hear your view of a comparison between the XR and a Super Duke GT, both similar styled spirt tourers.
I think it boils down to your preference in v-twin vs inline 4. Both bikes are the best of their variety without a doubt
When I was shopping for a "do it all" bike, the challenge with this bike was: You get all the exhilaration with, somewhat, worse ergos, depending on your body type, with the S1000R. If you want something more comfortable with longer range than the S1000R, the GS enters the conversation and delivers many more practical use cases and range with much better aftermarket options(luggage, crash bars, etc). That's one aspect you didn't address in this review - the aftermarket ecosystem. Personally, I'd look at a Yamaha MT10 if you're just looking for that exhilaration/sexiness with better ergos than a pure sports bike and you'll save some $$ vs the XR, too. - A happy R1200GS owner
I have a 2021 1250gs ralley and a 2022 s1000xr. There's is nothing more needed
@@EasyGravy420I have a 2014 R1200RT and a 2015 K1300S Motorsport to counter that need. Wheels down brother!
Great review 😎hopefully you can also do a review on the new 900XR..
Nice try
Very good and balanced review. At 59 yrs old I was looking for a new bike that would "check most of the boxes". My last inline 4 was 25 years ago and I have been on mostly v-twins since then. I looked / test rode the RT, GS and the XR in addition to the Ducati Multi V4. For the way i ride the XR just seemed more comfortable to me. I saw somewhere in the comments something about a lack of aftermarket.....really? Pretty much everything that can fit the RR or R will fit this bike.
Yes thats 💯 true.. More so the R!!! Im going to pickup this bike as my daily commuter… And im totally putting on a full Akrapovic headers & Midpipe with the SC Project Carbon CR-T can!!
Rented this bike in Florida and my god it was love at first ride!!! Idk why people say in-line 4’s have no soul… this thing came to life at the twist of the wrist… and the sound is intoxicating!!! My wife gave seal of approval too in Florida so the deal is basically done lol
I had a R1250GS, was tempted by the XR, came across the Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx and I love it, such a smooth and yet torquey in-line four. Have read several compairisons that, ergonomics aside (it‘s more front-end orientated than the upright position on the XR) rate the Kawasaki‘s engine higher as it‘s smoother and has a fuller mid-range. Having said that, I haven‘t had the chance to ride the XR, which Iooks I really like. Cheers
Great review. thanks! For normal riding i prefer my R1200R but when i go faster i take my 21 XR😜
I would also consider the Versys 1000 as a contender. Same style of bike an a inline 4 cylinder engine (even though is about 40 hp low in power)
Just ordered parts with your RM ATV link!
Ian, just an fyi. I really apprecaite your videos. I am just getting back into motorc after 20+ years away. I have reviewed your reference to Rocky Mount and RevZilla. I find Revzilla so much better. I just tried looking for some Barkbuster hand guards for my newly purchased BMW F 850 GS Adv and the search took me to tires. Early useof RM was not any better. Revzilla I’d rank at 9 and RM at 5. I have already purchase $2,100 from Revzilla, but I found it necessary to send them email to say I have purchased after seeing them referenced on your CZcams. I doubt I will use RM very often. I’ve been a teacher in geophysics as a side gig. You are a good teacher.
How about the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE LT+? or even the base Versys 1000?
Have you ridden the MultiStrada V4s? I am deciding between that bike and this one. Thanks.
These bikes mentioned are for touring and you missed the best one,, versys1000s, enough power, best reliability, smoothest, best wind protection and best comfort including pillion
One thing to add on this bike is, that it kills phone cameras, with it's vibration buzz. The GS with it's boxer is phone friendly. So if you want to use the BMW cradle, get the GS over this one.
Great review, maybe the 1290 superduke gt is the only comparable bike to the xr?
As a previous owner of a gen 1 XR, that got moved on quite quickly when I realised I had numb hands, feet, and backside, I’m hoping this is significantly better. It’s a much better looking bike, especially in red, and many of the gripes from the old bike are fixed (ugly LCD dash, no tyre pressure control, ugly pannier mounts, strange headlight design). One glaring omission I think may have not been picked up in your review is the side stand. It’s ridiculously short so makes the bike lean over far more than necessary, counteracting the lighter weight and making it a pain to get off the side stand. I guess having the bike too upright on the stand is worse and I believe it’s possible to buy a puck to lift the foot of the stand up, but considering how polished the the rest of the bike is, it seems odd. And, finally, well done to BMW for including full options on both the standard and lowered suspension models (so ESA and a centre stand) - something the tend not to do on their other models.
Do you feel the weight of this bike on slightly tighter twisties, debating between this and s1000r? I am looking for an all rounder, mostly commute and weekend runs + few longer trips in a year.
Great review. My only suggestion would be some input around travelling on this bike. Does it have pannier options and would they destroy how it cuts through the wind? I currently have a '17 R1200RS and might be looking for something with a bit more spice and more upright - but it needs to carry gear for multi day trips. I have had a few GS's and don't want to go back there necessarily (I have a 790R for gravel touring). So info on how it can carry a bit of luggage would have helped me. Keep up the good work.
You can get colour and key matched bmw panniers and top box, bit pricey but y’know “bmw”. I have the triple black 22’ XR, the panniers don’t do a lot to slow it down, obviously they stick out a little bit but they are somewhat aerodynamic. I recently did a 200KM trip fully loaded panniers and top box and to be honest, if you’re used to the XR’s weight an extra 20-30kg doesn’t really make a huge difference.
The only thing I don’t like about the current model is that it needs quite a bit of work to really get the power out of it (full system, ecu flash, tune, etc.). Don’t get me wrong the power is there but, you can’t really get to it during normal road riding. The power only really comes in at around 8-9000 rpm, before it’s a bit lethargic.
I had the 16 XR too, and that one used to just power wheelie almost every gear, the new one doesn’t. With this one you occasionally get a little lift around 10000rpm in 3rd, but that’s about it. That could be because of euro exhaust regs. Full system is on the cards for me soon, will have to see if that does much.
awesome content 👊🏿
Always enjoy your content. Keep it up.
Thanks
Ian, any chance you'll review the Helite air bag jacket at some point? I have the leather one and would love to hear your thoughts on it, especially compared to the Badlands since they're about the same price.
The airbag seems to me like it would give it the edge in safety but it does lack the chest protection of the badlands. Also it has a total of zero vents so you can bet I'm getting hot In that thing in the summer (socal as well)
