Hi Aivars. Another great video. I thought I would share a story about a coworker I met at a large Fortune 500 company. He was hired along side me as a development lead and was 50 years old. He had spent his entire adult career as a Radio DJ and didn’t pick up development until very late into his career. He started as a front end developer for a small consulting company and eventually developed a very niche skill set that is in high demand at larger companies (Salesforce Marketing Cloud). He is doing very well and is considered the subject matter expert at his company in his field.
Like you have mentioned, most employers (at least from what I have seen) tend to like older applicants as they are more mature, have more experience, and are potentially more relatable. Hiring managers are typically in the 30s-50s, and like to have someone in the same age range from a social standpoint. I will reinforce Aivars comments and mention that I have been apart of dozens of hiring committees hiring junior, senior, architects, etc and not once has a candidate ever been too old (too young is another thing).
Age discrimination will always be a thing unfortunately, but no matter your age, it is my opinion that confidence is a key factor in presenting yourself to an employer. Confidence in your skills and your ability to learn and adapt in a new environment will take you very far. While impostor syndrome can be a very scary thing, it is important to remember that everyone around you is just a human too that learned programming just like you did. We are all googling things every day, and we all stare at our screen for hours on end for stupid mistakes.
If for some reason there are some other young/young-looking freelancers reading this that are battling the flip side of this conversation, I should just mention that it never gets easy (especially as the amount of zoom calls increase during the pandemic). I am constantly told that I look too young but at the end of the day, if you have the skills to back up what you were hired for, there will never be an issue. If you run into employers that don’t respect you simply because of your age, I promise you that there are other problems at that company and you don’t want to work there anyways.

Very interesting input. Specialization and niching down to some specific skills help a lot in freelancing as well, but I'm sure you know that.
Cach 21 is another side of age discrimination and I heard about that quite a lot in social networks. The first job in the industry is the hardest one and older applicants have at least work and life experience advantages here.

Found your keyboard video and started checking out your other content and this definitely spoke to me. I'm over 40, I started writing code in my 20's but didn't take it seriously until my 30's when a major life change forced me to become the head of my household. I'm now in my 40's and have been a corporate CTO, lead developer, senior product designer, and worked for some amazing companies in my now 10+ year long career. You should never give up on working towards your goals and building a future for yourself, no matter the age. Great video, again! Loving this content thus far.

I've been an IT technician in my early twenties and in the military in my mid-twenties. Changed cities and was in the telecommunications market as a technical and support adviser. I've also been installing fiber optics by day, while studying multimedia by night, in my end twenties.
Early thirties I went back to customer and technical support. Mid-thirties I was a restaurant owner. Age 37 I became a mountain guide. Right now, age 38 I'm a personal trainer, strength and conditioning, nutritional coach who's getting back into tech to become a computer engineer/web dev/ programmer, but I'll still be working on the other fields I'm passionate about.
There are no limitations, only the ones in the mind. Whatever you want in life, go for it. It's not going to be roses all the time, but it will be damn worth it!!!!

@@AivarsMeijers And impostor syndrome can also be challenging to overcome, even as you establish yourself in your career. I felt stupid too, and still do, and it's my full time career. The best advice I've ever received was from a fellow high-level developer living in Los Angeles, working for one of the most well-known companies in the world. He said if a day goes by where he doesn't get stumped by something, or has a difficult time doing a task, than he didn't work hard enough that day. In other words, it's a challenging industry and even the best of us need to solve problems. Stick with it, and you will make progress. I'm glad I did, it made my career and literally changed my life.

The kids scooter video clip to explain experienced vs not-experienced developer was hilarious.
Age is just a number. Young people may learn quickly, old people will take some more hours. But at the end if one is focused, he will make it.

43 and started learnig. In 2018 I had some hobby success in C++, when I created a program with zero knowledge on programming (it can be found on my CZcams videos [Fruit Squeezer]). As I look at this program now, I have no idea how did I do this. But I did. It is not a matter of age. I don't feel that it can be too late to learn something new. Maybe it is harder to find time for it, because od a day job, kids, etc. Because of that I plan to use your advice Aivars, and start my day at 4.30. Greetings from Poland.
