ASP PRESENTS:
USMC Canteens and Covers through the early 20th century.
The M1910 canteen, cup, and cover was a drastic new design. It was self-contained and hung on the back of the belt. It held one quart of water. Two canteens could easily be carried on each hip. They would stay in service for most of the twentieth century until it was eventually replaced with Camelbacks and water bladder packs.

My Uncle enlisted in the USMC when he was 15 and he landed on Iwo when he was 16. I have one of his 3 canteens with his name on it. It's an alum. canteen. He was a machine gunner & Iwo was his only combat.
Wooow man that’s crazy
@@starlord1177 and one combat experience is all enough
The canteen I got in boot camp and still have is from 1973. I can only imagine how many recruits have pissed in it.
"V-Mail" stands for "Victory Mail." It was a system the US Armed Forces used during WW2 where messages would be written on small, standard-sized forms. These forms would then be photographed, and the film canisters could then be easily transported either out to the field or back to the States. Once at their destination, they were enlarged--some quality loss, but usually legible if the handwriting was okay--and delivered to the recipient. This saved God-knows-how-much time and effort that would have had to be expended to move vast quantities of traditional mail back and forth between servicemen and their families back home.
wonder whatever became of jack and nora trumble. great video man.
Camp Elliot is here in San Diego, CA. It’s three miles from my house. It was a USMC artillery training base 1936 to 1944. In 1944 it was moved to Camp Pendleton, CA.
Impressive collection. The one cup written on is a jewel.
I bought a WW2 canteen today and etched on the bottom was the name Elsa Hogue I live in 🇨🇦 and I searched his name and he was a medic in WW2 an 🇺🇸i
Rick Barg thats dope
My G-Pa (Herbert "Herb" Schultz who passed when I was just 8.5 in Mar '92 at 71 had 1 of those Open Canteen's for Soup, Coffee, Food etc he'd etched it wth his K-Bar everywhere he fought or rested. It has Thewa Jima, Tarawa, Saipain, Tinian, Okinowa & Nagasaki since he was part of the Occupation force that marched in 28 Days after the Bomb. It's CRazy but we've learned more about his service the last 7 Yrs then the few things he said to my Dad & Aunt growing up. 2nd Marines/II Exp Force, 10 Reg, Fox Comp, went in a Buck Priv came back in Oct '45 as a 1st Sergeant with a bad Hearing condition in 1 Ear from dropping 75mm-155 mm Howitzers on the Japanese.
I have a korean to Vietnam era marine corps canteen. I got it at a flee market.
Cool!
Where do you search for those? cus i have a few canteen with names and i wanna know who they were. Any help appreciated :)

This is cool.
I just learned that the canteens we used in the Netherlands in 1991 are basicly the WW2 U.S. version, padded with felt and before the snaps.. As the usmc from 1952 but with plastic bottle and stainless cup. Neat. We also wore o.d. green but with a dpm poncho (allready)
;))
Excellent reference examples for collectors here! I certainly learned a lot. Thanks again!
Awesome collection of Canttens thank you for sharing
This is awesome! Thank you so much for doing this! Love to learn more about military history and military issued gear!
My early 60s Boy Scout canteen was simular to some of those shown, I always wondered if it was repurposed and stamped with the Scout logo?
Could well be, I've seen pictures of German boyscouts in the 90's with surplus M1931 Zeltbahn shelter halves.
i belive it may be, i've seen ww1 and ww2 stuff converted for scout use, i dont modify them but i use a mixture of ww1,ww2, korea, and vietnam stuff for scouts
WOW.... big collection and thank you for sharing.
Greeting from Guam. That marked canteen cup is cool! Send my regards.
that is an amazing colection. Bravo
Jack Trumble was from Elyria, OH and started his Marine Corps service Dec 1, 1942 at Parris Island, then to Quantico before he left for overseas service in September of 1943. On Iwo Jima he was a 20 year old Corporal, serving as a mail clerk with the Third Marine Division's Post Office.
The Google-fu is strong with this one.
Wow what a amazing video thank you for sharing
great tour of your collection!
Very informative video well done . A little fact my USMC WW2 vet father shared with me was was that they would put a marble in the canteen to keep algae from building up and of course when going into action the marble would be removed.
Nice collection. Thanks
Nice presentation and pieces.
awesome Collection
awesome, thanks for sharing
cool vid. really want that seamless canteen
wow well done and beautiful collection I love it and your video. A++++
This excellent info thank you
"Camp Elliot" was California, near where MCAS Miramar is now.
Very nice !
I have a canteen cover with Guam and Iwo Jima written and also has the 3rd marine division, his serial number, and the marine corps EGA drawn on the cover.
Thank you so much!!!!
They had some experimental canteen pouches.
I just stumbled across this video and I have a WW2 marine canteen that was marked up just like the canteen cup. Has the guys name, the ships he was on, the battles he was in, and a couple women's names.
Very nice 👍🏻👍🏻
Very interesting, I own one of those black canteens, but have always thought it was enamel coated and not porcelain.
7:34 What an amazing cup!
Awesome video Chris.. very informative and the collection you have is amazing! I have a question regarding a canteen cover I recently purchased... it's a 1930's Calvary cover with the straps... is there anything you can tell me about it like rarity and average cost?? Thanks in advanced
I was at an antique store, saw a porcelain canteen and thought it was fake before I knew what they were but know I know I missed a rare opportunity.
Solid PRAC! Semper Fi
Very impressive collection, particularly the enameled canteens. Do you have a way of getting rid of oxidisation in the older aluminium canteens?
If you want to remove it from the inside you could get some metal bb’s and put them inside the canteen with a little bit of water, then shake it for a few minutes until the oxidation layer is removed.
Nice collection of equipment thanks for sharing. I would think the Marine corp museum would love that inscribed cup!
I'm sure they would. But my collection is for sale to the highest bidder. Museums don't pay for there items
+Joe A That's true
+Joe A where could I get info on the stuff you are selling
+raaaaaaa ebay
+WWII USMC thanks
If you like arguing all weekend about the seams in your canteen this is the hobby for you....
Harry Kuheim or if you just like history....
This guy has to have dropped thousands on this collection over time. I have a modest display case with some things in it but nothing this vast. I’d imagine guys like this are why these items are so hard to find.
That army canteen cover with the hole in the bottom was probably dated 1918 because the back is weaved all the way down
Outstanding Collection! Love the engraved canteen cup! What did they use to engrave it?
Probably a knife.
chris, do you remember be I gave you some info about my uncle col Robert s moore from fssf fame. great stuff you have
Camp Elliott is in SanDiego. Mir Mar Naval Air Station.
I truly enjoyed this! I was prompted to check the old canteen on my desk. It says US. SWANSON 1944. It has a lateral standing seam, about where a canteen chip would come to when nested. I presumed it was aluminum but would it have been stainless steel?
I’ve bought a cross flap canteen cover with a fourth marine division invasion mark on it. I believe it was probably used on Iwo Jima but I’m not sure.
2:07 why was such detail put into the canteen holder rivets ?
I own some weird later version of these canteens. It's the same style as these but really tall. Its fated at 1978
I got cup that has wcw on the folding handle like the second canteen on this video
I have a Vietnam era canteen, I’m not sure if it what branch it was but I’m 99% sure that the cover which I also own is US Army. Is there any way to tell what branch the canteen was issued in?
I never leave home without one.
I'm from New Caledonia 🇳🇨
Camp Elliott is San Diego; adjacent MCAS Miramar.
Camp Elliott was in IL
Great video!
Im ordering a full ww2 tarawa loadout, i have everything i just need to order my canteen, cup and cover its a whole pack together and i need an m1936 belt to hold my canteen
Anyone know about the 1951 dazey corporation cup and 1963 hamill MFG CO cup I need to know materials. I think the 51 is stainless and the 63 is steel but coated. Idk the 63 is magnetic but the other isn't
Is there a way to contact this advanced collector?
What model canteen is the very last World War 2 canteen you showed? It's the canteen with the army cover. I have a canteen just like it. It's dated A.G.M. C.O. 1945. It has the World War 2 issue black plastic cap. Is it a rare variant? Once again, what model is the canteen?
That's bad ass
Can you do more videos with Jo please
+Jack Pittman In the near future, we will.
I have one of those seamless super rare canteens.
Eman I had one but my mom threw it away awhile ago thinking it was nasty
Threw it away, it was in rly good condition
WWII Re-enacting yeah, but whatever. It’s ok
@@landen2934 damn that sucks
That first one is similar to the types used during American Civil War.
Get this man a glass of water
we used to get them wet on purpose to keep the water cooler......evaporation.
Had this video sent to me. I own the unis p5 at the 17:50 mark! That’s funny to see
fun fact about these canteens and other army things when the boy scouts started the army gave them old equipment to the point that those campaign hats the leader wore was from the Spanish-American war sadly the boys scouts throw tons of their old army stuff doesn't help that I was able to get a whole ww1-ish uniform from those big industrial trash containers.
Couldn't you also theoretically use the hole in the pattern 4 cover to catch rain? I always heard that water got pretty scarce because the Japanese poisoned the water with dead bodies.
I used to have a British made us army canteen cover with an EGA and invasion markings
Does Joe have social media or somewhere I can follow.Im also curious if he is a member of the militaria forum or something similar.
Would you be able to identify a canteen I have? you did not cover it in this video, but I'm sure you would be able to identify what era it came from. thank you for your time!
Tyler Noel if you want I’d be happy to try for you, I’m not any form of expert but if I don’t know it I’d be happy to research it!
I SAW JOE IN 2 OTHER VIDEOS OH MY GOD
Hey I have a question I got a 1942 dated canteen and the top is a flat bakelite top like a 1918 cap but not aluminum
and an aluminum ring is that a common canteen
rod garage everyday if you post a video of it on your CZcams I can have a look, I’m not an expert but I do know my fair share!
@@KeepItBrick I will I'm make one soon
Hello
I am a WWII gear and gun collectior. Is it possible to get the contact info to this gentelman that collects USMC gear. I would like to ask him a few questions.

Lars Erik Gill
Actually, I have my gramps vietnam combat belt with his canteen attached
Please show me all!
I have a 1912 canteen that I inherited.
Whaiit is this project about
My uncle was USMC then 17 in Da-dang and turned 18 in Vietnam in 1969 , my grandfather signed for him , far cry from today's youth in America. As a kid I loved this kind of army 🪖🎖️💜 surplus gear .
I have what seems to be a vietnam era canteen and cover with cup . The problem I cant find one like mine and wonder if it is to a special unit or if it may had been modified in the field . I fould this in the trash complete . The canteen cup had never been used . Now it is the cover I need to figure out . It has 3 leather straps or loops if you will . One on both the right and left sides. And one on the bottom included intertwined on the bottom strap is an O ring . All the leather loops are riveted on to the canteen cover with Brass rivets . And both the leather and the rivets look old and are still intact . I can squeeze a bic lighter in between the leather loop and the canteen cover with canteen inside . If anyone has and info on this item or anything to add . Please feel free to contact me . I could e mail pictures if need be . I spent hours looking and looking to find a picture of one like it and no dice as so far . God Bless
timothy thomas if you can post a video on your CZcams I can have a look, not exactly sure what it is, my guess would lean towards being a cavalry re-enforced canteen from the sounds of it, but I’d have to see to be sure.
Hard to get a hold of the real but I will be very satisfied with a high-grade stainless steel replica,
Oorah!
I have an original 1942 aluminum canteen cup stove that had the picture instructions sticker but I was stupid and ripped it off cause I didn't think anything of it. I have never seen another one since and wanted to see one here but there wasn't one but that's OK.
that last stainless one looked un issued....I want it
I have a 1945 canteen with out s cover but I'm getting one soon
