- In this video, i go over common issues with the 5R110W. Pumps are a big problem and when filling this transmission it should be done a certain way which i go over, temp sensors are common failure as well and case breakage due to high line pressure. Thanks for watching. Off to the shop.

Thank you gary for every video you make I'm learning from you
Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video! Beside the $500 diode gear set a new case was also needed.
Expensive but still cheaper than a new truck.
Yes, you are correct. Company we did it for said the same thing
Thanks for sharing this video.
I have one of this transmissions that dont move forward or reverse but I couldn't find nothing bad or damage.
What ended up being the problem? I'm having that issue now

Broken drum.
The one that fits on the pump.
@@juanvicentemedina9110 is it easy to replace? Mine went out while driving up a hill, goes in park but no reverse or drive
@@307wyomings5
You will have to drain the fluid and pull the filter out.
After that you will have to pull transmission and put it with the pump up to pull the pump out.
Be very careful to remove and install the components on the same order.
That drum fits on the pump.
Thinking of rebuilding mine when I remove the engine to go over it. I will be referencing your video to make sure I have my complete kit prior to any tear downs. I don’t like start anything and be missing anything, for example the manual valve. I like to have all the ingredients for the sandwich.
Sounds good, i do not recommend you open the pump, you need special tools to line it up. If you do decide to work on the trans let me know, there is a certain way it has to be filled, also clean all surfaces(engine block where it meets the bellhousing) and run extra ground wire to the trans
Wow, where are you located? Question. 2003 f350 4x4 lariat 6.0 diesel. Locks up when put in drive. Go to 3rd and it takes off in 3rd and shifts out ok from there. Tow/haul light starts flashing and it will take off in d without locking up. But it still takes off in 3rd. Pcm command to the computer will not show any gear but 3rd, no matter the gear selector position. Max gear allowed however, changes correctly with gear selector lever. I just put a new pcm in, and it's doing the same thing. Pulled the pan, no metal and fluid is clean. Fan however is going nuts, going off and on, once tranny is warm. Reverse works as it should. I get voltage changes on all solenoids except c. It never gets voltage or builds pressure. Also when driving down the hiway and it shifts out of 3rd into the higher gears, the pcm gear command goes blank. When you stop, and it downshift, it will show 3rd again. 1 and 2 is never used, at any time. 2 codes p2703 friction element apply time, p0703 gear ratio incorrect. I think it's getting hot and engaging the fan after driving it 30 or 40 miles. Fluid is still clean. Truck sat 17 years in a storage facility over estate issues. Has 88k original miles. Everything else on the truck works perfectly, no other codes on anything. Truck looks new and was protected from mice..
Thinking about putting a Cummins to mine. Is it worth using this transmission or should I upgrade while have it out?
My trans feels like a faulty solenoid. I'll be driving along and all of a sudden it pops out of gear and pops back in. Very weird. I see that a lot of online stores sell solenoid kits. I was hoping you would talk more about solenoid failure. I reprogramed my trans for towing then I had the reverse delay you discussed.
Do you rebuild transmissions that are shipped to you? I have the 5R110W in my 2008 Ford F-350. I bought it with the engine blown so I have not yet tested the transmission with a functioning motor. The transmission might be perfectly fine but I was entertaining the idea of rebuilding it anyway since I am going to have the cab off and the motor out. It would be devastating to have it all back together to discover the transmission is bad, too.
Hey Gary I am having problems with my 5r110w leaking from bellhousing was wondering if you could point me in the right direction plz sir?
Great video, my 09 mazda 5 at. Acts up when going up hill, and no reverse some time, what could be the wrong
Gary have you ever had one that works fine in forward gears but when put in reverse it jerks like it can’t engage then after 10 seconds or so it locks in reverse.
Any update on this question?
Thanks for your video Gary. I recently did a 5R110W trans swap, replaced the front seals, reman convertor, and all was well for awhile. The front seal blew out. What are your thoughts?
Ol trans swaper
I have a question. I put teflon ring in the forward. When I put the car in reverse the transmission is kicking. But not always. What could be the problem ?
Same thing here
Hey Gary. What would be the difference in a 6.8v10 5r110 and a 6.0 diesel 5r110? Is it the front pump? I read somewhere the diesel transmission has a larger diameter pump to make up for the lower operating rpm. Any sort of truth to that?
Would have to ask my supplier, there are different pumps but i don't think one is specific to a diesel.
I will ask my supplier when i speak to him
I have a question what would make my trans temp gauge quit working when the fluid gets warmed up seems to be consistent
The 5R110W has problems with the temp sensor, usually it reads to high and makes the fans come on, what i would do first is install a new temp sensor, can be done by dropping the pan
good day Gary. so I've been using ur video and successfully rebuilt a 5r110 with no forward or reverse. after 30 mile drive I lost line pressure. None in any gear at any rpm. the live data shows line desired pressure at 80 and shows pc solenoid at 49 psi at park idle or 1000 rpms. removed valve body and everything looks ok. there is small amount of debris in he valve body. ran code p0750. any suggestions on key areas
ok, does the car move cold and stop moving hot? or bad all the time?
hi, I'm rebuilding my engine on the 2004 Ford 6.0 powerstroke. where are you located and what is the cost to go through the transmission and rebuild it. thanks
can you describe this filling procedure a bit more? i have one with 35k original miles and i would very much like to completely drain and refill it with fresh fluid before the mileage gets too high.
Another great video!! We just had one come in the other day with no drive or reverse engagement and a p0756 and a p2701. Thought for sure the coast clutch drum was broken, but when we pulled it out, no damage was found?? Customer installed their own unit, a Ford reman, in December (April now). the trans is mated to a 6.0L Diesel but we noticed the coast clutch drum had "gas" stamped on it. Ever seen that before?
I never have, never really looked at the drum. Anything in the pan? Pump and converter look good? Had plenty with the coast drum going bad
@@GaryFerraro nothing in the pan, fluid was clean and full, pump gears were fine, no sticking or worn valves, converter still looks new? I've had a lot with the broken coast clutch drum too. this is a truck another tech in the shop was working on and we were both surprised to see the drum in one piece.
Hey just wanted to ask something I’m new diesel owner. Got used f350. Does the 6.0 feel like a slip in transmission when you drive it not warmed up? Once warmed up drives excellent?
I would think it should not slip when cold
I have this transmission in an excursion and i recently experienced a shudder while towing my camper at about 65 mph
Now if you down shift it it stops and then seems to randomly come back. Im guessing its my torque converter lockup solenoid or the torque converter itself can you advise?
Probably is your converter, did it feel like a rough road or wash board?
Interesting videos. REALLY NEED YOUR HELP. I lost drive and reverse after a mild spin in sand, so I had it towed home and installed a line pressure solenoid AA.. the one where solenoid body has to get removed to remove the harness. When ahead and installed a new filter and temp sensor. Now my shifter is stuck in park and cannot test the trans. I dont know if the shifter problem was there after the tow because I did not try it before installing the parts. Is that because of something I did or something else? and if it still does not move in D or R what would be the problem?
You probably didn't hook up the manual valve. No drive or reverse could be a bad pump, blown converter or stuck open pressure reg valve. Before you pulled it apart did you check the fluid level?
@@GaryFerraroThanks for your quick reply, I did not check the fluid. After the tow it sat in Driveway on a incline so would not have read correctly unless I jacked the front up over a foot. I believe I connected everything after installing the line pressure solenoid. I now have to figure out why it wont shift out of park to test it or get it towed to a repair shop.
@@rmtz59 Disconnect the cable at the trans(block the wheels and set parking brake) see how the linkage moves at the transmission
Very informative video. I'm getting an intermittent PO741 TCC solinoid performance code. Transmission is working excellent otherwise. Fluid and filters are fresh. My understanding is that the front pump seal could be worn and causing this. Can I change that seal without removing the pump or fugetaboutit and tear the transmission apart. Also could be the TCC control valve in the pump. It's funny how folks worry about their 6.0L when they really need to worry about their 5R110 😂
Was this ever answered
No unfortunately, been driving it like this for years now 😂
Hey Gary, Great Video, Thanks! One stupid question....How does the shift kit lower the high pressure?
Does not really lower it, shift kit should fix the problem, the new pressure reg valve has longer lands addressing bore wear and if there is a pressure spike a relief valve is installed behind the pressure valve to handle the spikes should they occur
@@GaryFerraro How much would the shift be affected with the kit in the 5R?
@@jfubele Shift really should not be affected, the kit just help for high line pressure and case lug blow out, kit should not make it shaft hard or anything like that.
you are number 1
Thank you
Gary very nice video. It was very informative. You seem very knowledgeable so figure I'd see if you know why my 08 f350 would have fluid pouring out of the front inspection cover (rubber cover). Trans still goes in all gears and drives. Been parked now trying to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi Sean,
Does this leak all the time or only when hot. Any noise coming from the pump area when the car is running?
@@GaryFerraro thanks for the quick reply. Yes it leaks all the time, cold or hot. Running or parked. There are no unusual noises at all coming from it either. It's a good solid pour as well. I only drove it once after the inital day. That's after I replaced all the solenoids because I had a fault for solenoid A so tired that before deciding weather to drop the whole transmission.
Sean,
If leaking from the front, have to pull the trans, if no noises coming from the area may be something like a front seal, or maybe the bushing spun, these pumps do have issues, I have a special tool to line up the pump halves, they also say the pump may suffer from bad grounds in the car. A steady leak and no noise almost sounds like something happened to the front seal
@@GaryFerraro Thanks, I have a decent amount of mechanical knowledge but limited to transmissions. I just never really had to tear them apart before. I felt like it was probably a seal from the beginning. Because no noises, everything still shifted and drove fine just kept leaking. No visable damage to the case. Then I thought maybe the torque converter was leaking (seal or damaged) not sure. Guess I'll just have to drop it and see what I see. I appreciate your input though. Wasnt sure if it was a tell tale sign of more significant damage off the bat though. Thanks
@@streetbiker0000012 Don't rule out converter, sometimes the studs leak, when you drop the trans down, try to pull converter out quickly(it's heavy though) to try to see where the leak is, also look at the pattern, meaning if it's just running down the bottom may be a seal, if the whole bell housing is wet all around may be converter, not very common for this trans to leak from the front, the transmission lines look ok?, i had a few of those leaking
Hey Gary quick question I I'm a small transmission shop in Missouri I've got an 07 Ford F250 with the 5 R 110 w this thing's kind of weird drive down the highway 60 65 miles an hour and all of sudden goes into neutral then shift back into gear you pull off the side of the road and it will almost lock the transmission up and squawk the tires put it in third gear with the gear selector it'll drive fine it seems like it may be a diode or something like that what's your thoughts I replace the valve body and also Illinois AIDS it has no no codes in the transmission 4 engine vehicle has 86,000 miles
ok, so is this after overhaul? and then when you pull over the trans is locked up when in drive?
@@GaryFerraro no sir it is not after overhaul customer bought it this way brought it to me at first I thought it was electronic so we switched the valve body with a reman valve body then know when I pull off the side of the road the transmission locks up or binds squawks rear tires then releases and is fine but still neutrals out on highway speeds if I put it down in manual 3rd it drives fine

Gary have a 2007 f550 6.0 diesel with the 5r110w the other day I was loaded transmission started to act funny all of a sudden flared up I let off and it stopped. I go to back in my driveway at the end of the day and had an very slight delay into reverse and the best way I could describe it moving was like slowly letting out a clutch pedal on a manual transmission for the first 1/2 and it then bogs the engine and then it’s normal . The following morning I was making a right on red had my foot on the brake pedal and for a split second felt like the truck wanted to keep going. Went to take off and had erratic shifting again. Doesn’t seem to be slipping, fluid has less than 10,000 miles factory mercon sp doesn’t smell burnt, no codes logged, I’m a diesel mechanic on tractor trailer trucks and by no means an expert on automatics but any help would be appreciated before I take it to a transmission shop
