I moved into a house accross the street on Stratton Rd in 1970, which I lived in through that decade and at times afterwards through 1999. I met the artist couple's two sons playing in the road salt pile there behind the adjacent fire station in 1972. Thet invited me inside that station mid 1972, and I was there a few times that year.
That was great. I lived in The Bronx and Mt. Vernon for over 30 years and I'm familiar with several of the stations but not the one in this video. I took the Morris Park and 180th Street one for many years. Thanks for your reporting.
growing up i lived just off pinebrook blvd and in the 70s the station was purchased by another artist and his wife and family who lived there. i went to school with their son and was friends with him. i was at their home many times. it was just beautiful. fond memories
What a fascinating story and a superb video presentation. The story of this RR is a peculiar one, too. For instance, why such an elaborate station for only a handful of potential riders? Why indeed such an elaborate RR, that basically was shadowed by its parent, the New Haven? I always look out the window of the N.H. train when it goes through Mt. Vernon, as it passes by the remains of where the Westchester crossed over. The abutments are still impressive to see. But a sad story too, of how neighbors treated this incredible artist. Thank you for this film!
The railroad business was very competitive back then. Being in direct competition with the New Haven, along with the lack of connection into Manhattan is surely what led to it’s demise. The branch into White plains would have been so useful if it survived, but then we wouldn’t have this amazing story.
My mind was blown when I found out today there used to be a train line though this area, then blown again when I discovered this old station Is two minutes from my house. Great video and context, thank you!
Amazing...I live close to this station, discovered it a few weeks ago (the NYW&B too) and suddenly I find this video that answers most of my questions about it....very well done, impressive that you got the whole story on the artist who bought it

Didn’t graduate but I was class of 2003.
This station at 556 Stratton Rd was officially landmarked March 8, 2022, look for the city of New Rochelle official landmarking documents.

As teenagers,my parents met in this train station while it was abandoned in the 1940s
My father lived a stones throw from the Quaker Ridge station and in kindergarten rode the train to school in Wykagyl
