The story of how an abandoned NYW&B train station in New Rochelle, NY was turned into a private house, preserving a piece of Westchester's forgotten history.
Thank you. Flow 444 XFE
That was great. I lived in The Bronx and Mt. Vernon for over 30 years and I'm familiar with several of the stations but not the one in this video. I took the Morris Park and 180th Street one for many years. Thanks for your reporting.
I moved into a house accross the street on Stratton Rd in 1970, which I lived in through that decade and at times afterwards through 1999. I met the artist couple's two sons playing in the road salt pile there behind the adjacent fire station in 1972. Thet invited me inside that station mid 1972, and I was there a few times that year.
Over 2.5 years after making this video, my mind continues to be blown by this story. That’s why I put in the work to make this video. It took about a week of editing because I was still learning the software. Continue to watch and share. Thanks for the views and feedback. I salute you all 🫡
What a fascinating story and a superb video presentation. The story of this RR is a peculiar one, too. For instance, why such an elaborate station for only a handful of potential riders? Why indeed such an elaborate RR, that basically was shadowed by its parent, the New Haven? I always look out the window of the N.H. train when it goes through Mt. Vernon, as it passes by the remains of where the Westchester crossed over. The abutments are still impressive to see. But a sad story too, of how neighbors treated this incredible artist. Thank you for this film!
The railroad business was very competitive back then. Being in direct competition with the New Haven, along with the lack of connection into Manhattan is surely what led to it’s demise. The branch into White plains would have been so useful if it survived, but then we wouldn’t have this amazing story.
Mt. Vernon HS is in the house.
Didn’t graduate but I was class of 2003.
This station at 556 Stratton Rd was officially landmarked March 8, 2022, look for the city of New Rochelle official landmarking documents.
Looking at this brought back almost a sense of fear. When I was a kid, there was a rumor that two little boys bodies were found in there. I think it was two little white boys if I'm not mistaken. I never confirmed this. But I always used to work past that drink and be scared. Lol. Yeah, my ass is laughing now, but back then I was not. Lol. This was a good look for Mount Vernon history though
I never heard that rumor but if it were true, I’m sure the city would have done better at sealing this place up. I only heard of evidence of people living in there. I was never brave enough to go in myself tho. Thanks for watching
Excellent video! Great research and very informative. Thank you
My mind was blown when I found out today there used to be a train line though this area, then blown again when I discovered this old station Is two minutes from my house. Great video and context, thank you!
This station was closed down because blacks in that area could afford to travel with the whites, I know because my uncle worked in that station.
Would you mind educating me my brother. I love history of my city. I don't know this history, so could you please educate me?
@@brittainpurcelle5611 I'm not a dude, but it's the truth. As soon as they saw that it was convenient for black folks to travel they shut it down. Once they did, black folks had to take the bus.
As teenagers,my parents met in this train station while it was abandoned in the 1940s
My father lived a stones throw from the Quaker Ridge station and in kindergarten rode the train to school in Wykagyl
Very nice video. Well done and great info.
Thanks for posting. Never knew it was there.
Great job on this.
Great video. Good job.
I was with it until you started flickering with the camera lights off and on. I messed up my eyes I stopped watching it after that.
Fascinating. I used to live in New Rochelle and had no idea about the history of the station.
Lived and worked nearby. Thanks for posting!
That was very interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
Amazing...I live close to this station, discovered it a few weeks ago (the NYW&B too) and suddenly I find this video that answers most of my questions about it....very well done, impressive that you got the whole story on the artist who bought it
Awesome video. Did the current owners know the station's history?
Not sure who the current owners are, but I'm sure they did some research when they bought it. Thanks for watching!
I have been trying to get in there for years max
Very cool I didn’t catch the location I had as a kid played under North Ave in Wygagyl at what was once a train station Always wondered if it was connected to the strip in ward acres that looks like former railroad bed
@@susanmaness2616correct. And it’s easy to see from the road while the trees are bare.
A great Train Station Home!W&B was a very Wellbuilt Train its a shame it was Discontinued as it would of went to Boston one day?
growing up i lived just off pinebrook blvd and in the 70s the station was purchased by another artist and his wife and family who lived there. i went to school with their son and was friends with him. i was at their home many times. it was just beautiful. fond memories
That’s awesome. I would love to see it from inside and walk the platform.
What an awesome story 👏 😀 well done..I have no idea where this property is but I do know the girl scout house in Larchmont..
Right next to a small fire station.
Great video. I grew up nearby and both know the property and have seen it many times. Hoping it lasts forever.
Beautifully done. Thank you.
I use to eat lunch right across thinking I wonder what that was...heavy d neighborhood
wow I always wondered about the old hunts point station by the Bruckner and Whitlock station
super interesting! Its hard to find much information on it, as much as I wanna see it for myself I still need to respect people's privacy
Wow!
That looks so cool but I think I would be scared as heck to go inside.
