Why Is The Evo X So Hated? (Varis Evo X)

- When you hear the name Varis you know it's exclusive, outrageous looking, and expensive. Today I had the chance to drive one of the cleanest Mitsubishi Evo X builds I've ever seen with some of the rarest parts in the world. Even though the Evo is a legendary JDM car the Evo X seems to get a much worse reputation than the Evo 8's and 9's. So why is this case? Let's go for a drive and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Sundays!

At least they went out on a relative high. The X was a success.

Who says the X was hated.🤦🏻
People generally hate the evo x for two reasons. The 4b11t, and the weight.
As for the 4b11t, the 4g63t is a 20+ year old engine. It needed to change eventually. There's loads of new technology that could be implemented with a new engine platform, and the EPA forced Mitsubishi's hand, so it was a good a time as any to update the platform. It is lighter, produces more power out of the box, and it is more tuner friendly, albeit with most tuners having far less experience with it over the 4g63t, but that's the nature of having an engine out there for two decades. People get very familiar with it. The 4b11t doesn't start to lag behind the 4g63t until you start to get into really high power numbers, wherein the closed deck iron block of the 4g63t helps it out tremendously. But, at that point, you've already swapped out the internals and sleeved the block, so both platforms can hit four digit numbers, which makes the closed deck advantage a moot point.
And as for the weight, if 200lbs more weight over the previous gen makes it as many say "not a real evo", then the 7, 8 and 9 aren't either, being 600lbs heavier than every generation prior to those.
Realistically, it's just a case of "new bad old good."
I couldn't have layed it out any better.
Dope ass comment
The biggest argument I’ve heard on why people dislike the 4b11t is that it’s a cast aluminum block and when you try to make power on that block you have to be extremely careful because the block is more prone to cracking vs the 4g63’s cast iron block. This is just from what I’ve heard some people say
I think we all can agree that the X is a better handling car over the 8 and 9 honestly. Imo, I wish the X was lighter but it's the trade off of having a modern car verses a track and off road purpose car with Rally heritage. Stock for stock, the EVO X has it but when big power numbers and mods is a thing, everyone will say due to how long it been around and the vast aftermarket its had, the 8 and 9 have the advantage.
@@10Fails1234567890 I’ve actually heard the opposite. Correct me if im wrong, The 4b11’s cast aluminum, open deck design allows the block to “flex” as it needs to under high boost thus reducing the chance of warping/cracking the cylinder walls.
I think the X is underrated when it comes to evos. This evo is so pretty! I love the color

There is no reason for people to have struggles with these cars. The correct mod paths have been well established and documented. If you blow it up, you’re doing it wrong.
Had my X for 6 yrs and its never gave me any problems. Full exhaust and tune
@Daniel Long I totally agree. If you want a 500hp awd car than buy one, but we have people who want to push their limits and complain about the results
Yup, mines been super reliable till now. Only major thing I did was replace the clutch core in the SST

Fun Fact: Only time you can say “I love my X” and actually get away with it is when you mean an Evo.
I like most guys my age fell in love with tuners from fast and the furious. When it was getting close to me getting my license the X came out and I thought it was the most badass car ever and I said to myself one day I will own one. Fast forward 10 years and I got the chance to purchase a final edition #1238. I've owned it now 3 years and put 60k miles on it and use it as a daily. One day it'll be crazy loud and spin all four but for now it gets me around and has been my single favorite car to ever own. I hope to keep it forever and one day pass it down to one of my kids.
That’s awesome man, i don’t have a final edition but I do have a 2011! Evos for life 💪🏾
When X came out I really hated it, but it grew on me so much, I had to buy one. Now I am a proud owner of 2010 GSR. It has some bolt-ons and suspension, nothing really crazy, makes around 350 AWHP and it's just really nice daily. I don't regret buying it even with the fact that the maintenance is sometime really tedious.
congrats man. I bought a new GSR back in 2014, and my last payment is due in a few days!! I daily mine too and it’s been awesome. I hope I have a child to pass mine down to as well someday.
I bought my second evo x back in Oct. 2020 after having my first one only for a few months. It was a little too expensive for me first time around but not anymore. The evo x was the car that I first researched getting into cars and holds a special place in my heart. I love it to death, I was lucky enough to find a well taken care of example with FBO, flex fuel and pro tuned. It’s honestly the perfect daily driver for me. The only car that might make me sell it would be the new Z coming out, as Im a huge Z fan and have a project 350z that I also love
@@j_matgarage4276 that's awesome I've got a 2013 gsr & a 03 350z that I've had for 10 yrs as a daily until I got the evo 2 yrs ago. My z has 194k on it lol
I think the Evo X is a pretty underrated car compared to the 8 and 9
I still think that it's a great car that is very capable and fun to drive!
True. The biggest problem for me, is that it’s big and got a v6
@@felixbb1445 no it doesn’t.. it has a 4cyl turbo.

I had an Evo 9 back in the day, thing was a blast. Always liked the look of the 10, and Subaru must have also since their 2018+ WRXs look eerily similar to it.
Evo X is the best Evo for many reasons, looks, handling, engine
Such a badass evo x build! SO many rare jdm parts on the build from Varis, to ARC, to Coltspeed, Project Mu and the list goes on! Love it!
Love the varis. Spent 20k for the performance of my sti now thinking about hedging that same number of years and labor to go full varis. Evo looks like it turns heads, very nice.
Sadly, I think their glory days are gone. That said, can’t wait for the new Z!
Even Mitsubishi themselves basically declared their days are done. They sold off their UK heritage collection
@@carsNcards according to some leaks its gonna be 35k. Not bad imo
@@nhilist5774 ...at least base price (which is still way better - just look at the new Supra). I’d expect typical configured prices to be $45-$50k... again... highlighting Toyota’s grave mistake, IMO
I'm excited for the Z, but I just can't get into the giant rectangle on the front fender that doesn't match any of the other body lines/shapes. I figure aftermarket fenders will be plentifully available to address that, though.
The drive train is nice, but the looks and it still being the outdated 370z chasis, I just can't get behind.

While the X may not be my favorite Evo i do absolutely love it and this one so much! I'm personally more of an Evo V guy but all of them are so cool! It's really sad that there will probably never be another Evo
I used to want an Evo 8/9. Your Nessa video made me fall in love with the X. I’ve had mine since 2014 and I’m still obsessed with it!!!!!
Awesome! I still have that issue of Modified magazine December 2013. I was stationed in Afghanistan on a small outpost called ACS4. I had a subscription to the magazine and I remember opening up my mail sent from home and that issue was in it. I had always wanted an Evo X but couldn't afford it. I was injured on that tour, my 5th combat tour. and spent almost two years recovering from surgery and physical therapy along with a 2nd divorce. I held onto that magazine and used it on my vision board. After retiring in 2016 I moved on with life and one day I seen this beautiful white 2013 Evo X MR for sale right down the road from me and after test driving it, she ended up in my driveway and still there to this day. I too had the bug and put more money in that car then what I paid for it lol! I never regretted the decision and its 100% reliable daily driver. Great video!
I have that Modified magazine issue, that's a nice throwback to see
I'm a Evo X fanboy. I've always wanted one. My first bought car was a red lancer when I was 18 in 2009. I absolutely love the 2008+ Evo Xs.
Seeing the DTC on your sweatshirt really meant something to me. I'm glad that's still relevant
Just drove around in a Final Edition from 2015 today, incredible vehicle. Big fan.
Before I transitioned into luxury cars, Evo X was my favorite and still holds a special place in my heart. It doesn't look it, but it feels to drive so effortlessly and it looks good. It delivers a lot for a 4 banger.
This is almost exactly how I'd want an evo x. Great video David.
honda designed the valve train for the 4b11..evo x out performs the other evos but people dont want to hear that
@Justen G its been proven stock for stock

Head flows more for sure on the 4b
Nice to see this car again. Was a local car that was regularly at out local C&C coffee event in the Chicagoland area. Then Jackie dings partner bought it and it sat in a shop for 2 years
Maaaaannn I've been an Evo fan for idk how long now but once I saw this contest give away for an Evo X with a Varis kit and $20 grand I was blown away how sexy that car looked with everything on it, I love the "Var is" kit on the evo x its gorgeous. Also, thanks for making this video because you talked about a few points that opened up my eyes a lil more on the evos so thanks man
Had my x for 6 years and still love it as much as ever
god bless you and your family, great videos and great vibes!
Looks clean, never got the side body craze unless it is molded in
I've had my 8 since 2009 was stock when I got it. Has been nothing but a pleasure to own in the almost 15 years I've owned it has given me no problems. Even been on e85 since 15 and all the fuel lines are still intact. I think if you get one that's not trashed and you take care of it they can been phenomenal cars.
I'm not an Evo owner, but I can appreciate them for what they are. I have a Bugeye, so obviously power isn't much of a concern to me. I do pretty damn well at rallyx's with 255whp and 238 lbs/ft of tq. Basically if you know how to drive either of these cars you can have a damn good time. Most people dont have enough talent (I'm not claiming to be great, its just a fact to consider) to utilize the potential of these cars in stock form, let alone ones making 500-900whp. Besides, they're being turned into drag setups, which is as far from their original design purpose as you can get. In my opinion the X is the best looking one, although the 8 and 9 have me with the late 90's styling.
I love the look, but honestly couldn't tell you were at WOT until the last 1-3 pull.
In the king Reese clip you can see the backpack on the back seat lean back everytime your on the gas. Nuts as they come
Would a sequential turbo setup be a viable option to deal with the lack of power after initial takeoff?
Always liked EVOs and tuners in general. I was in my early 20s when The original F&F came out. I was young and broke and couldn’t afford anything but my cavalier. 😂
I actually bought my 08 GSR with a Varis front bumper and Varis/Runduce side skirts lol. I didn't know who or what Varis was or even realized it until the next day lol. I just love the Varis bumper, it gives that car a more aggressive look.
Absolutely love the Evo X! They should have done something to keep the evos going.
You need to review the FF evo that Dustin just bought when its back on the road!
The x grew on me but it took a while. It's still an evo and gets my attention whenever I see one. I remember my tuner saying the x was basically somewhat a Hyundai bc they utilized a few parts
The X is such a great car. I do miss owning one. I got so much hate for it cause I bought a 08 and 14. The used prices for them are a little crazy.
How much would a stock evo cost? And where could I find one in America
I love it 💖 X is easier to live with. Also I prefer to have just bolt ons and keep it reliable than make crazy power and being afraid it's going brake down all the time
I've had my 14 Evo X for over 4 years now. Bigger turbo, bolt ons, E85. Zero issues! Best car I've owned this far. And I don't see myself getting rid of it. It was a dream car for me. It's got it's quirks but all in all it's a beast of a car.
honestly, i think that is the best place to put an EVO X, one of the MHI upgrade turbos, some boltons, and an E85 tune really is about hte limit of what you want for a car that is meant for cornering on the street. Plus, anything more and you are just asking for reliability problems IMHO --2010 EVO X MR owner
@@snotcycle mines a GSR so I don't deal with SST issues. But yeah honestly it's right were I want it. Now I'm just focusing on looks and getting it all set up the way I like now that I got most of the mods I wanted done. Minus a few things.

I really loved all the older Evos and it was hard to like the X until I saw all the potential and how much of a better daily driver the X is. The X handles amazing for how heavy it is. Even with bolt ons the evo X are extremely fun.
Amazing video
It’s so cool man I want that kit for my evo x
It was the beginning of the end, people saw Mitsubishi smoothing off the rough edges of the original evo, it went from a homologation rally car for the street to more of a luxury GT car... People didn't hate the car...as much as they hated what the change signified...13 years later we have the eclipse cross...
Love the 8/9 but I seriously love the look of the 10. Stock standard yeah it's a bit "base modely" But add a few personal touches as most would, it's a real looker.
i miss when my evo was only full bolt ons... less broken parts. at the 500whp+ club now and i snapped my diff in half on a hard launch.
The one in the video is pretty nice. It’s more of a show car than a DD or race car. I would build the motor, and upgrade the turbo. From factory, they are peppy cars, but like you said, it kind of falls flat. I did a GTX3576R in my MR, and it’s in a great spot for power. Good powerband, and just enough to have a little fun. Rare parts arent really my thing, especially the that ARC UICP. People charge over $1k for that pipe. Which I think is insane..but no matter what aspect of being an enthusiast, you have to pay to play, and I can still respect that. I think it’s a nice car overall.
You aint had a proper Evo experience until you have been in a Evo V/VI. Those are the goat models in my eyes. Lightest, Best looking and just about as raw as it gets for an Evo.
That’s such a good looking X. Love that color.

A friend has a Evo 9, with bolt on mods which I have quite a bit of drive time in. My cars are built for mountain and canyon driving and not quarter mile or red light to red light, so 500 or 600 hp numbers are not really relevant to me. My Evo has Ohlins suspension, aftermarket manifold and Akrapovic Ti turbo back exhaust that eliminates the cats.....with a tune for 105 octane non ethanol and my hp numbers are equal to that of the
FQ-400.
Great video! Thank you!
People just love the 9 and the engine in the 9 but honestly the x is better in about every catagory. I personally think the evo x is a beautiful car. I do like the way the evo 9 looks a little more but evo x looks amazing too

The Evo X is a hell of car! All Evo’s are lol I had a IX and an X, and miss them. Would love to get another on the side in the future. Looks like they’re holding their value pretty well now.
My Evo X had a larger FP Red turbo, meth kit, 31psi and put down 473whp. Not the craziest, but super fun and plenty of power with just a bit extra lag. Had the Varis hood as well. I think it’s one of the best looking hoods on the X. Not over the top like some, but just enough.

Perfect evo, as much as I love big turbo evos, I have a soft spot for stock, stuffed, or even bolt on stock location turbo kit upgrades on Evo 8,9, and 10’s because I see them as fun daily cars and due to the fact that they are still very livable, and are also fairly reliable due to the fact that it retains the coolant lines which are needed mostly for the evo 10 because they shoved the turbo in near the fire wall. This x would be awesome to take to the canyons and even light track or drag days
I loved the EVO VIII, that is pretty much the only body style I'd be interested in acquiring. and modding it slightly with bolt-ons.
I love that kit but never knew what it was called saw a red one at my local blizzards and cars. (The only place in tow that let us have car meet was sonic and daryqueen)

I have owned this car almost 5 years now. Basically the internet told them to not to like it. When you peel away their argument like onion there's no real substance there.
Someone that gets it. New bad,old good. The x could've been double the power half the weight and people would still say " it's just not as raw" then when these companies stop making sport cars cause no one buys them cause everyone with a voice dogs them, it's "so and so lost their way, they need to get back to this and that"
The brakes upgrade = my rotary engine rebuild 😂😂😂 + some extras
The rigidity comment was important and more info like that would be appreciated. Its hard to find comparison videos between the ACD 8/9s and the 10 and details on the specific driver impact differences are key. I owned a brand new 2005 Evo 8 off the lot and selling me on the Evo X both handling better and being more fun is a hard sell. That said, the 10s are a good bit cheaper...
