Lava flow ocean entry at Kilauea volcano Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Three-part video.
The Kamokuna ocean entry.
These video clips are from my GoPro Hero 3+ shot at 1080p 60 fps.
They're three different outings combined together.
I'm finally catching up on editing and posting videos and photos captured during the past month or two.
As each new video is posted you'll be able to see the progression of the new land being added to The Big Island of Hawaii.
It's quite fascinating.
Part 1 shows a unique view of the sea cliff and a small new black sand beach that formed along the cliff. For you geologists, you can see all the layers of past eruptions in the sea cliff.
Part 2 shows the same but, with an active flow slowly streaming down to the ocean.
During this visit, it was very stormy with lots of rain.
The bike ride out there that night was quite exciting with all the heavy rain and constant thunder and lightning. Several inches of rain fell that night into morning.
Part 3 is more subdued. Watch the small flow on the left closely as it slowly oozes over the cliff like jelly. Large waves pound the new land and ocean entry. A video from my Nikon D800 will soon follow this posting.
As usual, it was very windy. During these visits it was mostly blowing onshore so, there's a bit of salt spray on the lens. Also, some minor swaying.
I can't see the camera once it's down there.
The sea cliff averages about 45' in height.
These new beaches are extremely dangerous. Stay away.
Thanks for subscribing and watching. Many more videos to come.
Be patient. What I do isn't always easy.
My usual warning.
Do not attempt to do what I do.
I have 25 years of experience and I know what I'm doing out there.
So many things can go wrong for those who don't understand or can't recognize the dangers of a volcanic eruption.
Stay away and watch my videos instead.
Having said my usual warning, let me add that this flow is accessible via hikes of at least 8-9 miles round trip.
Expect large crowds of people. Be sure to carry at least 3 liters of water per person.
Always use extreme caution at the sea cliffs and never walk out onto new land as it could easily collapse into the ocean taking you with it.
As the bench grows the immediate sea cliff will be vulnerable to collapse also.
I highly recommend you watch this HVNP safety video on safety at ocean entries.

Also, it's best not to breathe if you find yourself engulfed in the steam plume. If you think you will be in it often, be sure to wear a respirator.

You're good at finding the amazing views. I can tell this is the love of your life.
Yeah, I really do enjoy it. Its a close tie between this and surfing. On a good day I get to do both. Thanks for watching...
Filming amazing lava flows WHILE surfing?
Wow
That is the most badass thing I've heard of in a while
No, not at the same time. Might surf in the morning somewhere and then drive/hike to the lava that night. Although, many years ago there was one new surf break that formed by a lava flow for about one day. Too far to go get a surfboard and catch a few waves. It was gone before I could have ever done so.
lavapix Oh I see

You capture so much in your videos. Love the sound of the falling lava rock against the crashing waves. Awesome work, as per usual.
Thanks...I spend several hours out there exploring on each visit. Thanks for watching...
+lavapix i really wish I could see first hand all the stuff in ur videos, just plain amazing. Every minute is well worth the hours it must take to get all the amazing pics and videos you put together. Your dedication you have putting yourself in harms way just to get sweet videos is awesome. A little crazy lol but awesome.

Hi
Awesome footage! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching...
Looks like an ancient world.
For those complaining about rotaion, do you realize what it takes for him to capture these? He said the camera is on a rope, so he cannot control that As much. Still, these are amazing captures of what we'll (me) will never be physically able to see in person. Amazing stuff I think.
Haha, thanks Lindsey and thanks for watching...
Excellent video as always, beautiful footage
thanks loved seeing this view is beautiful
Thank you and thanks for watching...
very nice vid lavapix
This drone camera movement. I got dizzy. Great video, though! I wish i could see that beach in reality.

It's raining out side. So I want a warm feel so watching it... 😋😋
So beautiful
Thanks for the beautiful footage! The sound of walking at 5:47 is oddly satisfying.
Thanks... Good catch. I left that in on purpose of course as it was pretty quiet having the camera sheltered from the strong winds. The trade off was being squeezed in between two nearly stagnant hot flows. My water got hot enough to make soup if I had some. Thanks for watching...

Great capture! You use a rope to get the camera down, right?
Could you do it with a long wodden stick so it doesn't spin?
Thanks... Its 45' high. I've experimented with numerous stuff. Main issue is its 4 miles by bike to get there so, rope has been the easiest and lightest option. I carry lots of gear. My bike looks like something out of a Mad Max movie when fully loaded for my ride. Also, when the wind is blowing 25+ mph with stronger gusts, it doesn't matter what you use. I do have an idea that should help steady it. Now I'm just waiting for the right opportunity to try it out there. The key is not losing the camera. These aren't nice straight cliffs. They are overhung and jagged all the way down. Also, waiting for the new Gopro Hero 5 Black. I will have that as soon as they go on sale over here. Thanks for watching...
So cool
good job guys. keep up the good work
Thanks for butifull. Footage
I’m going soon to the big island, I would love to hike to this point, could you explain what trail to take to get here ? Thanks!
Sorry to say but there's no active lava at this time. There hasn't been for over 1 year now and it could be several more years before there is. If you just want to hike in that coastal area be sure and visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Thanks for watching...
It’s not expected to have lava here ever again, puu oo, the vent that was producing lava, collapsed in 2018 and is inactive
good job!
Thanks and thanks for watching...

oooh my god ya allha hum sab ease jagha se bacha ya allha hum sab Duniya valo par rehaim khaa😢😢😢😔😔😔
Awesome video considering you had to dangle the camera by rope 45 ft over a cliff.
Two sticks like a cross or like a puppet stick, the bottom stick has spinnability under the top stick which you hold in your hand.
Two small pulley's on the spin-able bottom stick for two ropes going to the camera for stability.
A third small rope attached to both ends of the bottom stick allows you to rotate the camera.
It's not as complicating as it sounds.
1. one long stick
2. One short stick
3. bolt, nut and a washer to attach the sticks, also with washer between the sticks for rotation.
4. two pulley's
5. as much paracord as you need.
Optional:
6. third stick to use as a stand, it could give your arms a much needed rest.
Thx 4 the great vid's
Thanks...I actually had that all planned for my next outing but another safe opportunity never came about. Bought all stainless steel stuff and wooden dowels. This was just a test at the time. Even though I could ride my bike the first 5 miles I still had limited space to carry stuff. Overall I was happy with the results considering all of the elements I had to deal with. Unfortunately, the volcano stopped last year and it could be years before it starts up again. That's why I'm doing other types of videos for now. Thanks again and thanks for watching...
Where is the blossom, 5:56 remind me of scorched earth by archipello.
Your videos are terrific but could you set up your camera near a flow going into the ocean and leave it there? Just film in one spot for a really long time. I find these videos fascinating and peaceful.
Thanks...Many of the clips you see are from longer clips. I try not to bore people with something going on for too long but, I hear what you're saying. I'll see what I can do on future outings. It's hard to stay in one spot when so much is going on all over :-) What's a really long time to you? I do have a nearly 2 min clip coming just showing the one distant ocean entry at sunrise with only the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach below. I'll be loading that soon.
I've been waiting for a calm no wind outing to shoot exactly what you're asking for. Don't like wind noise in my videos unless its part of the story. Also, wind brings salt spray which doesn't allow for long video clips as I'm constantly having to clean the lens.
I have a very long list of ideas for shooting that will take me many years to capture so, stay tuned and be patient.
Thanks for the constructive input and for watching....

7:30 I could watch that for hours

Lavapix this volcano was a blast can you film another one

Stop rocking back n forth.
great job
Lovely footage for most part of the video, but there are quite a few places where you moved the camera just too much and fast.
Thank you...The camera was at the end of 40' of rope hanging over the seacliff. The movement was inevitable. Considering the conditions I was happy to see it turn out as good as it did. Thanks for watching...

I would love to go and walk on the new land without any breathing equipment. I would totally be running around and jumping on the new bench, assured that it wasn't going to collapse or anything crazy like that. I would probably get a 4 wheeler and do donuts around the lava flows and my dog would be swimming in the ocean catching mermaids for me, and I would be totally smoking a big fat joint of choice weed that's been dipped in ketamine. Nothing bad would happen. No safety issues would need to be considered before I went on this grouse adventure. Choice, bro.
For the price the Chinese are willing to pay for real estate there, that stuff is like liquid gold flowing out creating more salable land.
Very interesting
