- On the southeast coast of the big island of Hawaii, lava flowing from the Kilauea crater collides with the Pacific Ocean. As new lava emerges, it quickly cools, forming billowy, round shapes called pillow lava. The constant accumulation of new rock results in frequent collapse and avalanche on the reef slope -- an accelerated cycle of creation and destruction that makes for a very unstable environment.
The steam, heat, fire and chaos that make up this underwater inferno are the backdrop for Episode 1 of our new series UnderH2O. In the series, our team of cameramen will give a behind-the-scenes look at underwater filmmaking and show how we go about capturing images of some nature's most exciting underwater events, creatures, and locations.
Please subscribe to our channel for new episodes every other Monday. Coming up, we'll feature a night dive with manta rays and go 100 feet deep to explore the marine life that has taken root around an airplane wreck.
And we'll do our best to answer any questions you might have in the comments, so please ask away!

The cameramen who do this kind of work never cease to amaze me. Truly people of incredible bravery.
I would like to give a big thank on this team for sacrificing just to let us witness this eruption.
May God guide you.
Thank you so much.
Hey Craig! Just showed this to my 7th grade science class. During our lesson on plate tectonics. When the conversation turned to hot plates and the newly forming Lo'ihi, one student asked, "what does it look like when volcanoes erupt underwater?" To which I replied, "Let me show you!" They loved it! Thanks for giving me the opportunity!
Since you are a teacher of our next generation, I hope you told them the difference between an underwater eruption vs. a lava flow from a land mass that then drains into the water. Because that is what this is. It's a good simulation of what it may look like, but please don't combine the two and call it an underwater volcano
Thanks. ;)
Oh no 😮😮
I'm studying the same rn so I came to this video
@@ajrob2888 er , looks like the lava is coming from the sea floor, technically it is an underwater volcano.
I need to express my deepest appreciation to all who play a role in the production of these most magnificent series.
Thank you, thank you, thank you very very much.
If you haven't already...Watch "Diving Deep" about Mike Degruy. Now he was an amazing man. I think you'll be impressed.
Except us then fish goes by
I'm surprised they could get up out of water or even in the water kahunas like those either or heads are empty which that didn't seem apparent. So I'm going with big kahunas. 😨😰😵😲
The fish were below the line, in blue. Above the line, as he said, was greenish.
😂😁
You guys are amazing. I can't even begin to imagine how scary and thrilling this was for you to experience. Great job guys..
Shit m scared watching this ....that is past the boiling point yet the water cools it fast enuf to form new rock yet then it boils tru again exploding oh my
"Approaching the volcanic activity, there were few sparse signs of life, but there was a clear line across which nothing swam".. *fish swims by camera*
Hahah the fish thought it was safe since someone was swimming near it
Fish, shark, shrimps dancing, sea horses!
@@maribelru2011 you suck
This is NOT an underwater eruption, this is lava flowing into the ocean forming pillow lava.
Jep. The title is complete bullshit!
Correct.
But hey, what should you expect since PBS was behind this video. Total idiots who love spreading around wrong and fake crap.
@@ajrob2888 isn't that a shame though! The fucked up part is, our history books, are based on lies as well.
That is eruptive behaviour. It's still very underwhelming compared to what I was expecting.
Truly indeed
“….across which nothing swam.”
Then a fish swims by.
Unless under pressure, Water will never, ever reach 150 C, above 100 C it will boil and evaporate immediately.
Water can only reach 150 C at approx 0.47 MPa, equivalent with a depth of 35m.
So the only situation, where water can reach 150 C is when lava erupts at that depth . . .
C,is what use at the minutes of the video and they said that the water temp increase that high but they can swim, amazing ,
This is not pure water. Its sea water. So it contains Caustic. Boiling point will be elevated as the concentration of impurity is increased in pure water. So, there is a possibility of 150C boiling point provided the concentration of salt in water and BEP curve matches.
Hi 6th graders! Thanks for watching. The water is very very hot, but the hot parts were in patches. We could actually see the different temperature patches, because when hot and super hot water are next to each other, they shimmer as they mix. Watching for these areas carefully, we were able to stay out of the super hot water which heats up to over 150 degrees. We didn't use more protective gear than normal because it was more important for us to be able to swim away fast if things went wrong.
UnderH2Oshow thank you for risking your livesyou are so brave n now many others can be educated by ur showi useyoutubea lotin my teaching
I am now in 10th grade

A submarine volcano is still better than terrestrial volcanoes. Terrestrial volcanoes sometimes creates a lot of air pollution, heat the surrounding air, emits lava to destroy surrounding stuffs and takes a longer time to cool down. Submarine volcanoes still creates some air pollution, but it doesn't directly flow through the air, it rarely heats the surrounding air, the lava doesn't destroy many stuffs and it takes a shorter time to cool down. During a submarine volcano, the seawater usually weakens the lava effect, which the lava becomes ineffective to pollute or heat the surrounding air or cause great damage, and they cool down pretty quickly. A submarine volcano usually can't cause great damage unlike the terrestrial volcano because the water usually weakens the lava effect, which eliminates some of their burning potentials.
Robert, we are professional divers and do not suggest anyone dive like this. However, for us, it was very important to have our gear as minimal as possible so we were agile and light underwater. The biggest danger was not being able to move quickly enough to avoid catastrophe. The harness systems and stripped down regulators we used were perfect for this situation. Thanks to Innovative Scuba Concepts and Scubapro for supplying them to us! And fyi, we do have SPG - wireless transmitter.
undoubtedly a great courageous act!
What you saw was earth reforming itself, unhappy with what it produced, but it didn't want to waste either so it choose to used the rubble as the foundation for the next build...this is more than proof that this world is a living being, with a mind all its own.
If this was an eruption, they would be cooked and boiled to death by now. So this is NOT an eruption!!! So please, to those who made this video, be honest with your information.
I agree.i will not risk my life just to make a film during eruptions it is scary

Its 2013 not 2020
2013 video made ots 2020 now
thank you for sharing me. bravo your team.love from Indonesia.
Couldn't be more true! The perfect combination of wind, waves, currents, and lava activity was absolutely crucial to making this possible.
Boat Captain Roy is THE guy to go with if you ever want to try this. Mahalo Roy!!!
Wow, the formation of new terrain that will affect life now and in the distant future.
I have lived on the slope of an active volcano, been in ancient lava tubes, miles long like subway tunnels, gathered obsidian boulders from a mountain of glass and realize how dangerous, yet important volcanic activity is to life. Minerals, gases, climate change, destruction and fertile soils. The power of Mother Earth never fails to amaze me. I love the wonder and mystery of it all. I find it humbling, frightening and exciting.
I doubt life would even exist without volcanos, yet they can just as easily take it away. Much respect and awe.
85rcr, yes, that would be bad indeed. We were constantly fighting against the surge which was pushing us up against the wall. If the waves had gotten any bigger, we would have been pressed flat against burning hot lava rock.
Y'all are crazy as hell!! That is likely one of the most unpredictable environment's in the world. #Big brass balls
Where an air cooled outboard comes into its own😁
these brave cameramen risked their lives to bring us this there should be nothing but appreciation here
Nice Craig. I was wondering what you were up to. Fantastic to see you're still shooting video out there. I'm looking forward to more videos from you guys!
Subhan'ALLAH, amazing.
Boat Captain Roy here. This was one in a million. The weather and the lava flow had to be perfect, simultaneously, and it happened, the one day Craig was here.
Wow its like edit but thats is a real thing happening The nature is so amazing
Wow cool
Mother Nature showing its skill.
The sound of rocks falling underwater..so soothing
God's creation are very amazing
Oh wow. This is incredible footage. You guys are cool and brave!!! Awesome stuff.
They are ignorant!
They prefaced this by saying the water temperature could get to 150-degrees F. Human tissue starts to burn at 113-degrees. Extended exposure to the large blood vessels of the neck can conduct temperatures to the brain high enough to parboil the brain.
Lmao
Seriously unbelievable
Wow
Total devotion to the motion of the ocean.
Super super cool video you people are brave and adventurous in the best of ways. Keep up the good work
owesome
Keep safe and pray for everyones protection.... God bless... This is very exciting adventures under the water thank you for sharing us this information
سبحان الله
I appreciate this more if you found the lava flow in aquaman kingdom😀
😲😲😲
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always great seeing the planet regenerate itself.
Many years of training in The Bachelor series hot tub parties.
Wow, thank you for the video footage as well as the descriptions of how you felt down there!
Omg they are so BRAVE If that was me I would have been screaming to death 🏂😭
at some moment its look like a living creature... incredible
Very interesting the powers of nature
It's beautiful scenenario...thank you brave guys.
Thank you for documenting this...keep safe 😇
You Guys are all insane! For Doing like that nang Malapitan talaga?? 😲😲😲
We had that major under water eruption with Tonga remember
and that ladies and gentlemen that’s how obsidian is made.
Amazing how only a thin red line and occasional bubbles show that the rock you are next to is actually the tip of an active underwater lava flow.
A doubly alien environment ! I feel nervous just watching the footage. The guys comments on vibrations add yet more scary feeling, awesome!
Came here after Hunga Tonga underwater volcanic eruption Jan 2022
The birth of New Land
awesome for your first video
wow very brave guys.
Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing more of these. 150 degrees - I probably would have been the one who was cold after that dive
I would like to commend these people who took these video, because of your valor I have managed to explain to my grade 3 students how volcanoes erupt underwater. Thank you so much.
Wow........hats off
Yes it is unbelievable ....great work.
That was incredible! 🌋
wow
wonderful..unbelievably wonderful
wow no words
That was scary as hell just watching. I don't know why but the way those rocks opened and closed, grew and broke off. It looked alive, like a beast just waiting to strike. I can only describe what I felt as a primal fear. That whatever I was seeing would kill me without hesitation at the slightest provocation. These divers have balls of steel.
Unbelievable! I water volcanoe!
Underwater avalanche. 🔥😮
Amazing
Camera man never dies
Your job is very dangerous !!! Thank you for these images ! It's wonderful !
oohhhh means volcano erupt even in Cold water,.... OMG 😱😳
water rises to 150 degrees.
human: let's go underwater!
It was very dangerous but you had did it. I can't even imagine. How brave you are. Great job guys. 😀😎
I must say it's beautiful though it's dangerous if it erupts upward more. I really appreciate how brave you are and your group.
Incredible cinematography. That was extremely intense!
Craig, riveting stuff...the link was sent to me by your father. I once did an inland blue hole dive in the Bahamas (never again), and in my 30 years of diving I've never experienced anything close to the anxiety you and your crew must have had. Congratulations. Can't wait to watch all the episodes.
Regards, Bob Fishman
Wow😓
Fascinating! Great cinematography!
Loved this!!! Keep it coming.
Awesome footage at the frontier of what is possible. No one on earth is an expert in diving on an active lava flow, so I'm sure it was a serious endeavor. Congratulations on keeping the camera steady!
I never know there can be smoke underwater wow
We get HOT WATER !
I was holding my breath the whole video.
good video
great watch footage is awesome.. thanks
I learnt so much about the sea
Crazy but BRILLIANT!!
Isn't the lava from vents of the Puu Oo crater? I agree it is from Kilauea volcano magma flow. Kilauea is usually described as volcano or caldera. Halemaumau is a crater.
Nice camera work. Good luck on the series. How about cliffdiving at South Point or jumping off Akaka Falls. Shark cages off Kaneohe. 50 foot waves at Waimea.
Interesante.... Muy buen video
Shoots, lets go for another one!
3:53 is that a lightning?
Thank you for the video!
If even a few feet of that rock layer were taken away you guys would flash boil. Crazy to think about how good the insulation of rock is.
Depends entirely on how wide the fissure is. It's probably no more than a crack. It would barely heat the ocean for more than a few feet from the crack. It takes a massive amount of heat to heat water (four times as much as rock of the same weight).
Awesome.
Incredible. Thanks for sharing your passion
Haki wazungu mko daring
5:27 he came up with a scalded scalp/head.. but still enjoys the experience.
É bonito,porém assustador!
Nice
