The anti-drone gun giving Ukraine an advantage over Russia

- Since the war in Ukraine started, the EDM4S (Electronic Drone Mitigation System) has been a key component in targeting Russian drones.
The anti-drone gun is a point-and-shoot electromagnetic pulse weapon that handles like a standard infantry rifle.
By jamming communication signals it forces drones to either fall, return to base or make an emergency landing.

@@alexxalexx4311 one stupid comment in 7 years. I smell a Russian bot
Until they add a device to the drone that once its armed and it looses signal/signal jammed it sets off a 10/30/60 sec timer, or no timer to explode!!
We could've made it handle like so many things but I love the fact they chose the ergonomics of a firearm
Why wouldn't they?
thats like saying we could shape firearms any way we want but i love the fact that they chose the ergonomics of a musket????
You must be an engineer
Yeah, because all my hand held corded and cordless drills and impact drivers are shaped like firearms... what are the odds?
I initially thought it was going to shoot out a net to capture the drone.
....that was a few hundred years ago, ....we have progressed, to the point, of '' no return ''. Any weapon, designed and created, WILL EVENTUALLY BE USED / FIRED. We are going to extinguish , ourselves. Imminent......
Or a bolo that would entangle the rotors.
There are models that fit that description
same lol
That's a bit old now. And these drones are too high and big for that to be easy because the wind causes a degree of problems on the net.
This should work 100% of the time.
What the boys need to remember is that there could be drones with nerve agents or polonium isotopes, so when retrieving them you need someone in a biohazard suite and a protected van to take them back to the lab.
Back in the stone ages, we had to know the specific frequency each drone operated on. How technology changes in 40 years.
today, you still need to know it, the band or range that is.
True, but at that time we used a radio spectrometer to determine the specific frequency controlling the UAV, rather than a band of frequencies. Then a directional antenna would broadcast white noise on that frequency to disrupt the controller. Things evolve. The man pack version today required a trailer load of toys just two generation ago.
Mostly, we used the stuff to track and disrupt what are now called antique radio controlled aircraft.
Of course, nearly everything I worked with probably belongs in a museum.
@@galenrog hmm explain more clearly but thanks for comment
Ok, you guys seem to know a thing or two and I have a question. Why would the military simply execute an emergency landing instead of an RTB upon LOS?
@@MarkM001 because that drone is a civil one not a mil.
THATS GENIUS, can that work on loud car stereos ??
yes catch the programme circuit
then quit
if its man made it can be man jammed/blown up
While it does jam GPS and GLONASS, it looks like it's aimed at consumer drones with 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz. It may be less effective against a proper military drone using a different communications band. However, it would need some inertial navigation ability.
@Billy I read the description of how it works. It hits the drone with 10watts of power on those 4 bands. That's going to blind most any receiver that uses those bands, but if the drone used (for example) the amateur 440MHz, it may not have any effect. All measure/counter measures are a cat-and-mouse game with constant changes to defeat changing tactics by the enemy. This is no different.
@Billy rude
@Billy He knows a lot more than you fool
@Billy He is actually 100% correct. Civilian drones are programmed, usually due to laws and regulations, to land immediately when they lose navigation information. Military drones are not designed to do this.
But, please, educate us. Explain to us how he is wrong.

Imagine a full Artillery version that targeted Big drones and fighter aircraft.
The thing is with big drones and fighters is that they are powered by actual engines so they can't really be forced to land in the same way.
@@CFMLEAP ohhoohoh yes they can. If all flight control systems go offline that jet aint staying up in the air. Current gen / last gen relies on electronics more, so all you really need is a bigger and stronger EMP to slap jets out of the sky, the only way they aint goin down is if we use archaic tech
@@CFMLEAP Plus they move extremely fast, so the range would have to be incredible just to be able to sustain the beam on the drone long enough to bring it down without them just manoeuvring out of the way
@@edwardboyd4584 It could use a phased array antena to target and focus the em waves. A version to bigger aircraft could use very powerful pulses, to destroy eletronic components. Its doable, and could be powered by something like an large aircraft apu.
I think altitude is probably an issue as well. It wouldn't work if the plane is to far away, because the intensity of the beam decreases, the further it spreads. Drones fly at lower altitudes.
I would put an automatic system of these on every land vehicle that points in 180 degress and rotational. Definitely earns its place on every military land vehicle. Should be implemented immidiately.

This is just a consumer grade DJI drone jammer. Consumer DJI drones are mostly unencrypted and use glorified WIFI for control and so are highly susceptible to jamming and potentially even hijacking. Actual military drones use directional radios or lasers pointed upwards at satellites for control. Not only will they ignore signals from the ground, they won't even detect them. Devices like this were developed for use by airport security and similar groups since DJI has a near monopoly on the off the shelf drone market, and so a DJI specific jammer makes sense for preventing John Doe from flying over a stadium or blocking the runway at an airport. Most drone detection systems work the same way, they just watch for the unencrypted info transmitted by DJI consumer drones. Of course, in war, you use whatever tools you can get your hands on. From what I can tell both sides are heavily using consumer grade drones off of amazon as frontline equipment. They are absolutely better than nothing, but it doesn't take a whole lot to defeat them either. But once again, they are relatively cheap and plentiful, so they can be treated as being highly expendable.
On top of this, this just stops active signals. If a drone is programmed to do something, it will do it. With or without comms back to home base. A simple program could get a drone to do a task
@@MoonLiteNite Indeed, I have a DJI Mini 3 Pro and if it loses signal for a few seconds, it will will just auto return to where it took off from provided it still has GPS. If it loses that too, then I'm not sure, it may just land where it's at. GPS is hilariously easy to jam, so I suspect a GPS jammer is part of this system.
I’m betting any Ukrainian drones that are directing their patrols will follow that russian drone back to its user (range permitting) and no doubt have a coordinate punched in to their artillery within minutes. Win win either way!
@@RockapeandRolla They don't need to follow it. DJI drones openly broadcast their takeoff location and the controller's location too if the controller has GPS. Both sides have had to work around this, I've seen videos of Ukrainian drone operators running around towns in circles while flying their consumer drones to avoid getting hit by Russian artillery, I'm sure the Russians using these are doing the same. Simply put, these drones spy on both where the camera is pointing and also the operator. All of it is broadcast over the open airwaves unencrypted for anyone in range to see. DJI is a very pro mass surveillance company :D
@@GrendalTheBeasty I learn something new every day. I guess with all the ground the Russians are losing at the moment, they don’t have many places to launch from and move about in. Combined with the tech the west are sending i’m assuming the Ukrainians have a massive advantage in the drone side of things.

Thanks for the heads up... I'll be working on anti drone device defense for drones now
Using a mobile electro magnetics device? I doubt you’ll be able to achieve that in your shed.
What about using a drone as an anti-drone weapon. This could use a hydrogen filled attachment to lower the weight so it could float and listen for incoming drones. Using three or more you could triangulate on incoming drones. Being high above the battlefield will lower the noise from the ground, and using suitable filters, and spectrum information quite a bit of information could be acquired.
Just detecting drones is almost impossible. They're too small for radar, too cold for heat seeking, and too quiet for sound. The thing about drones no one tells you is that they can do the job of a $10 million dollar aircraft and $2 million worth of pilot training for $1,000 or less. This device that's "giving Ukraine an edge" costs more than 10 drones, but you have to be close and have direct line of sight for it to work. Meanwhile, drones can drop bombs on you from hundreds or even thousands of feet in the air and you'll never even know they were there.
the power of any emp reduces by the square of the distance ...so any emp pulse rifle would have a short effective range
With this using a scrope to hit, the width of the beam can be very narrow. Also, the controller will usually be further away, you only need to have a more powerful signal than them to jam the thing.
It does not appear to be an EMP. It sounds like just a pinpoint radio signal jammer, relying on the drone using whatever fallback programming it has for when it loses connection with it's operator. Some drones just fail and fall down, some return to home base, others just automatically land. Yes, likely the jamming unit has a relatively short range, good enough for slow moving drones, not really useful against aircraft.

I would have thought that the drone would fly far too high for the weapon to be effective.
This is quite good weapon for security, but also for this war, too bad that weapon seems quite big to be equipped normally.
Does it also work when the small drones have weapons like c4 etc?
if the range of transmitter hits the same band/frequency then
drop dead
By adding a radar and a way to direct it automatically this could target drones that can't be seen by the naked eye.
i dont think most radar systems can detect the drones anyways, their profile is too small. basically like a bird. They would have to use some type of audio check and IR to see the drone profile.
Some high precision radar systems can , which use other detecting technology rather than a general ultrasonic wave tech
I'm just guessing, but the EMP probably has a limited range.
it's not that simple, you can't direct radiation as they make it look in the video, waves spread everywhere and further targets require stronger waves... soldier's head would literally explode
Thank you Lithuania. Freedom and Ukraine LOVE YOU!
Great bit of kit, but looks only short range. OK for smaller RC drones, hope it can be scaled up for the bigger drones like the Iranian Shahed-136.
👌
LOL, no it cannot ;)
Only problem with it is it has no sound when you press the trigger. They should add a speaker that goes BUANG or something star warsy like that
Neat, but wouldn't a good semi/full auto shotgun be cheaper and just as effective? Provided the drone is low enough?
I think they also want to keep the technology for research. If the technology is good, it can be inspected and duplicated.
Fun fact: "meawawawa" is literally the sound it makes when you shoot it.
Yea I love their hazelnut coffee……
So if i have RTH set on the DJI drone it will just come back to the original location
Hmm.... i'm eager to know how it achieves a landing... does jamming the connection plus the GPS lead to such a behaviour?

Very cool.
Depending on the altitude of the drone a good old shotgun would be effective too.
A captured enemy drone is worth far more than a destroyed one, the radio frequency can be changed to
use it again.
ADD to the comment by, Shmaxo below; there are RAM/CMOS memory chips, on the video/audio of these drones. Capturing them, is of infinite more value, than just ' destroying ' them....

They don't work against the Iranian made drones. They seem to be unstoppable, which is crazy considering how slow they travel. There is some HIGH TECH involved in those Iranian drones.
No, the Iranian drones are just utilizing a loophole in the usual capabilities of anti-aircraft forces - and doing so in swarms. That's typical guerilla tactics. The best means to down it is probably a single motor Cessna with a pilot and a small arms gunner.

I wonder what made them choose the G36 platform.
They should try a version of that on a Russian fighter airplane and see if the avionics can be shut down on those as well. That sort of kit exists on combat aircraft but it would be interesting to see it in the hands of the Grunts-on-the-ground infantry. Fly by wire? No wire, no fly.
The US has Growler F 18's that do that, had them for a long time. They train right near my home. Target electronic signals of all sorts.
Aircraft and missile electronics are protected inside "Faraday cages", not perfect protection, but might be several orders of magnitudes less susceptible when compared to most drones. To be effective, the target may need to be much closer, the EMP unit and power source may need to far larger, large and heavy enough to be impractical.
@@als4817 Sure be cool if Infantry had access to jamming technology like that. These "drone guns" are in that direction.

I noticed that too, I dont know why they would do that over making it from the ground up, maybe someone had a bunch of spare parts lying about
They say it’s made in Lithuania. From their armed forces website: “The standard service assault rifle of the Lithuanian Armed Forces is the Heckler & Koch G-36 KA4”. So I guess the manufacturer coorporates with their armed forces, maybe gets out of service rifles or so.
Good old 00 Buckshot works pretty good too .
I made an emp out of a electronic fly swatter and a copper coil once. I reckon I could make one of these. 🤔
The implications of this are far reaching and seem likely to set off a race similar to that of the armor vs armor penetrating weapons race around tanks. Other commenters have already noted the implications for commercial airline traffic, fighters, etc etc.
Unless there's a breakthrough in metallurgy, armor piercing will always outpace armor. Even tanks today are extremely vulnerable. A man portable weapon that costs 1/10 of what a tank costs can bring one down, and that was before the drone age. Now, a weapon that costs 1/100 or even 1/1000 of a tank can bring one down. Drones have changed warfare in ways no one thought possible.
