it took him 9 years to perfect Donna Lee, but his vision was so forward that no one saw that coming.

I think the work he did with Hancock was some of the most evocative. Just a schmuck samping his work with different groups of people. I still haven't gotten a total sense of his work with Joni Mitchell, but the stuff he did with Herbie Hancock just seems to grab me, more.

He ended up sleeping on park benches and eating McDonald's fillets of fish sandwiches, crashed a Santana concert, and got killed. Nobody looking out for him..damn shame.

I know what your saying. Unfortunately, it's often not so simple. When people suffer from psychological disorders and attempt to "self-medicate", the results are usually disastrous. The person avoids or refuses help and also the suggestions of friends, and others concerned, to address the "issues". Now add to the mix an extremely energetic and driven personality, also a huge ego (not uncommon) and you're in "uncharted waters". Not even close to being a situation that could be handled by friends and well-wishers who are completely unqualified and unable to deal with the problem at hand (amateurs, where a highly qualified professional is needed). Yes, truly a sad and extremely unfortunate trajectory. Very common in the "arts" and other areas where the truly gifted light up this earth with an extremely bright illumination that all-too-frequently is extinguished much to soon. Never take for granted the good things in life. They're usually free. We are all so fortunate to have had Jaco, for however brief. He will NEVER be equaled. His "mark", never forgotten or erased. True genius, a true miracle.

Beau Hatman I appreciate and agree with your reply and sentiments.. but I feel more could’ve been done to save Jaco. It’s plainly obvious he wanted and pleaded for help and savour towards to the end. It’s as if those around him turned away, this is probably due to the stigmas associated with mental health at the time, but non the less, I feel more could’ve been done. I shed a tear and have a heavy heart for Jaco, but as you rightly point out.. his flame with continue to burn brightly.

Some things I’ve read said he was surrounded by hangers on and enablers. So for everyone that wanted to help there were also people who fed his demons just to be near the great Jaco.

Greg Orlandini this is true.. as it is with any successful person. I just feel more could’ve been done. My heart bleeds for Jaco. 😞
