- Robert Trujillo is talking about his first encounter with Jaco Pastorius - true jazz punk. Robert was busy in London with all-star Mass Mental (Armand Sabal-Lecco, Whit Crane, Benji Webbe) and also his documentary Jaco was receiving its UK premiere on Saturday 12th March at London Bass Guitar Show 2016 in Olympia.
Jaco I weren't friends, but we ran into each other in the VIllage in Manhattan occasionally. He was always cool to me. Anyway, in '85 (I think) I was having a beer at a bar with Jaco. We were taking about music. Then out of nowhere, he said "You know, I tell people I like to party and take chances. The truth is I want to stop drinking and taking drugs, but I don't know how." At the time, I had the same problem (I'm 36 years clean now). It hurt that I didn't know what to say or do.
Makes me think it must be lonely at the very top. We tend to socialize with people who are like us. Jaco didn't have that. I wonder if it had anything to do with his mental decline.
Really enjoyed this story, the movie is fantastic!
I love Rob, he's amazing in Infectious Grooves! He shouldn't play Jaco's bass around his knees
Here I was thinking I was going to hear a story of Jaco actually beating the crap out of Robert Trujillo. Wasted 2 minutes of my life smh :'(
I get that if you saw Jaco in person, you have to tell the story, but at the same time, this was a pretty anticlimactic story.
I missed the part where the "Ass Kicking" took place...
1:05 "I think I was about 26 - whatever - and I'd just took an E".
LOL Dropping ecstasy in 1985? Rob was just ahead of the curve by a couple of years!
(Yeah, I know he says 'I just took a knee'... but that's how I heard it, ok? XD.)
When Rober Trujillo was 26.. Jaco was already dead
