The remains of Hartwood Hospital, an 19th century psychiatric hospital with imposing twin clock towers, are the main feature of the village, even after its closure under the direction of the Lanarkshire Health Board in 1998. Like many other Victorian institutions in the area such as Gartloch Hospital, Stonyetts, Lennox Castle and Kirklands, the inception of the Community Care Act (1990) gave rise to a more community-based focus for long-term mental health care, and the consequent closure of long-term psychiatric hospitals.
The original hospital was overseen by Dr Archibald Campbell Clark, the medical superintendent, and was involved with the inception of modern psychiatric therapies such as occupational therapy, ECT and industrial involvement. In the hospital style of the time, Hartwood was entirely self-sustaining, with its own farm, gardens, reservoir, graveyard, staff houses, etc.

Hospitals are the fucking worst, me and a few buddies went to one about a year or two ago, the floor was littered with old IV bags, there were dirty hospital beds, wheelchairs, dirty, damp old rags and dark long hallways. Good on you for having the strength to explore, mate.

I've done a video on this hospital recently and it's strange even to see how it's changed over 12 years, even less life than it had here. Buildings torn down, the signs gone, little of the interior left, even the goalposts gone!

Went to hartwood hospital and nurses home? A couple of months ago with my family. There were a lot of old wheelchairs and debris lying around. It's so sad to see so much vandalism and damage to the buildings. It breaks my heart to see the condition the buildings are in. I just wish that someone could do something about it and maybe make something new out of it or rebuild it? But no one can access the building because of all the debris, vandalism and worn away floors ceilings and walls. What a shame.

I worked here from 1979 until around 2005 , a great place to work. It had over 2000 beds and was the biggest hospital in Europe. 1st place in the world to run as a therapeutic community and to train nurses in mental health care. Happily modern treatments make hospitals this size obsolete. But (lack of) care in the community - epic fail !!!

there's a really old abandoned hospital in Irvine. Me and my friend was there yesterday. We found an entrance but we didn't go in because there was cops going around town looking for teens that were drinking. The place looks dead creepy. the locations of the hospital have been removed from google maps so this is where it is. Its on Sandy Road near ravenspark golf course. If you go out to sandy road you will see on the other side of the road you will see a building that kinda looks like its a nursery. Behind that is where the abandoned hospital is. You can't miss it, all the windows have been boarded up and it is HUGE.

Been to Hartwood a lot since it was abandoned, not as scary as it's made out to be but there is so much to be explored, I think every time I have went I have discovered something new. If you're looking for somewhere really creepy with the same heritage I'd definitely recommend Birkwood Hospital in Lesmahagow though.

Later on we bumped into him again though and had a nice chat with him and he agreed to let us take pictures. I was wondering though where you guys aproached by the securety guard? and did you find the hidden grave yard? we walked for ages but never found it.
