- Hartwood Hospital was a psychiatric hospital located in the village of Hartwood near the town of Shotts in Scotland.
The hospital was designed to accommodate 500 patients and opened as the Lanark District Asylum in 1895. The complex included staff-houses, gardens, a farm, a power-plant, a reservoir, a railway-line and a cemetery. Two large separate blocks were added in 1898, a tuberculosis sanatorium was completed in 1906 and a nurses' home was opened in 1931.
The Scottish Union of Mental Patients was set up by mental patients at Hartwood Hospital in July 1971. At that time some 27 patients signed a petition to "redress of grievances and better conditions" at the hospital. After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in 1998.
Although briefly used by Lanarkshire Television as a film studio, the Hartwood Hospital buildings subsequently fell into disuse.[1] There were major fires in 2004 and 2016 leaving the building substantially damaged.

God bless all that were in there
My grandmother died in that hellhole. She had a dislocated shoulder for over a week without treatment. She died of pneumonia in there. Awful place.
Oh my, I can only imagine some of the going's on in there. There was an exposé on TV not too long ago about one in Canada and I guess the patients weren't looked after very well. If walls could talk! Bruce and Otis
They must have been hellish places.
Really nicely shot and edited video. What a fantastic building. As others have said, one can only imagine the things that went on there! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much.
Request, could you put up again the 'New development in Cowie' please. I been unable to locate this again, thanks.
Sorry Darren but this video was taken down at the request of someone who lives in that scheme. They complained and youtube removed it. No idea why as it was filmed before anyone had moved in.
You filmed it well. One of my local flying spots. Well done 👏
Thank you. First time I've been there
I stay just 2 minutes from here and was a lot better a few years ago a lot of th buildings have been knocked down, also been in every building and the underground tunnels where absolutely amazing now all blocked off
I bet it was. Still impressive buildings though.
What an incredible building! Wish I could find something up my way!
It is an amazing building. I'm sure there must be something around, it's just a case of raking for them.
Must be creepy inside that building, Kinda looks like Hogwarts combined with a old asylum.
It's MASSIVE. Must've been a lot of "patients" around back then.
That was the first time I'd been there and I was surprised at how big the place is.
Was a great place to be brought up.

I didn't know if it would still be there when I set out for it but thankfully it was. Like you I also doubt it'll be there much longer.
