Several years ago, a motorcycling magazine published an article comparing watching out for hazards to crime scene investigation; you are looking out for even the slightest clues to something that could present itself as a potentially dangerous situation…
Always good to have a refresher course. People get complacent of what they do while riding or driving my friend.
Car drivers will look right at you, and then will move into your lane. I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 15 (I’m now 74), and it’s a phenomenon I saw when I started riding, and still see on the road today. I’ve owned a 2021 Can Am Spyder RT Limited for just over a year, and even as big as it is (my previous bike was a 2013 BMW K1600GTL and it’s big too) they still don’t see me and the bike. You have to ride with your head on a swivel and defensively all the time.
Scan 15 sec in front, the distance will change according to speed. At 60 mph that will be 1/4 mile. But, your high concern area is within 5 to 6 sec all around. Pulling a trailer, need a light pole on each corners of the back. It would be nice they had led brake lights. I have not seen them for sale. Over 1/2 century of riding around the world, I love the sport and it was my only transportation for many decades, stay alert and never stop learning.
You have to ride like you are invisible. Even if you are on the interstate. I have had a semi come over because he was impatient with traffic and he did not see me on my spyder. Fortunately I had room to move out of the way. I also had a caged hauling but in traffic come inches from me as he cut me off. Watch the tires of cars when they may be getting in your way. Tires do not lie, if that tire rolls he/she is rolling.

I’ve gotten so many useful tips about safety and techniques from Coach Bob! Your videos have made me a better rider. If you are ever in northeast Tennessee me and my husband and friends would love to ride with you with you and coach Vic. We have a group of Harleys Indians and three Spyders.
I highly recommend Brake Free for the helmet. It flashes a brake light on your helmet when you begin to engine brake.
Good advice Coach. Personally I prefer hi-viz color motorcycles which is why my BMW is an Orange color; White and Yellow are also good colors I as think you can be seen better not 100% but better than a black, dark silver/grey, or any other dark color. I think that the dark colors really blend in as shadows in the background. But again this is just my opinion on color of bikes.
I wear a Safety Vest all the time when I am riding my Ryker. Helmet and all Gear too
When I was instructing with the motorcycle safety course the chief instructor went out with another instructor. They videoed the chief coming up to an intersection. They slowed the video down to show that the motorcycle disappears behind a road sign for 3 or4frames depending on the angle as he comes up. If you are looking that way at that time he just isn’t there. Now that was a street sign post not the pillar on your vehicle which is lots bigger. When they tell you they didn’t see you they are likely telling the truth. You gotta do what you can to help them see you!
I installed a break light flashing kit. I tap the pedal when I start to Off Throttle deceleration. If I am sitting stopped I am always watching the rear views and flashing the lights as cars approach. Thanks for all the reminders and life experiences. Learn from others!
I seen some ryders complaining about cars and your right, many times the Ryder is not right. They are not visible to the car either because they are in the blind spot or worse they don’t realize they are in the blind spot.
I love my Nolan helmet as it has a built in brake light that’s tied to deceleration

After many trips to recurrent training at the airline, I finally got some recurrent training on the Spyder from Coach Bob!
Visibility wise I ryde with my high beams on during the day. Might P O a few drivers but I am seen. I wear a high viz helmet and jacket all the time. I will soon be adding Tricled fender lighting and a bright driving light at the lower front center location on my '21 Sea to Sky. Since it's a Highland Green paint job, it tends to blend in so anything I can do to make me more visible is a definite plus!

My biggest fear is deer, and other smaller wildlife which is abundant in my hood and surrounding area. I’m constantly scanning when I ride, especially in predawn rides.
I’m planning to add more front lights to my ‘20 RTL because I ride in the dark three days a week to my part time job. Constantly scanning is a must.
Also, the front and back entrances to my subdivision dump onto a 55mph rural road, so being aware of speed and distance of vehicles approaching the entrance/exits of the subdivision is a must.
Good info and timing. I was just looking at a class the motocops at the Sheriffs department teaches on advanced riding and am signing up for it. Lol…please don’t make us sit through stop signs with you! I’ve had 2 small cars (Miata & Audi TT) that were driven “over” by big trucks in parking lots. Drivers side fenders crushed.

As you said our brain fills in what we expect to see, so rather than looking for an empty road, I try to find a vehicle. I expect to see a vehicle. As for distance, you mentioned a Cessna and a C-135 which I have no doubt you are aware of perspective. Our brain sees smaller objects as being farther away and bigger objects as closer. With all that, the main thing I've learned and still learning today is, you need to preact, rather than react. Oh and for the night, never outdrive your headlights. Recently found your channel and I love it. Looking forward to future videos.

Very good point Coach Bob! Another thing that I have noticed is there are a lot of people that don’t completely stop at a stop sign, which is training their brain not to see the sign and the actually start blowing through them!! This has happened to me a few times. When you see an accident at a four way stop sign, shows you that someone didn’t stop!! Thanks for the video!
This is a great refresher. I'm very guilty of slowing down without touching the brakes. 🤦🏻♂️. I was thinking about getting one off those inertia operated brake lights for the back of my helmet because old habits are hard to break. I'm trying to do better, though.
ST2 brake light flasher - when the senses engine braking G force it flashes the brake lights

I delt with this today. I was nearly was hit by a truck, had to quick stop and my kid was on the back of my bike, she was terrified.
Excellent topic. I've been nearly hit 3-4 times on the Spyder. Several times people look right at you before nearly running you off the road and THEN they see you. None of these were deliberate.

Things I do to Stay alive…
Extra LED lights and flashing brake light.
During the day I ride with my highbeams and spotlights on.
Say out loud “clear clear clear” every time before I move at a stop light or a stop sign.
Always predicting what people around me are going to do.
Swerve in my lane if I think someone might pull out in front of me.
Add reflective tape to the bike and back of the helmet. This has saved my bacon many times!
Good words Bob, thanks for sharing. I have attended many hours of Smith Training. Smith training has been around for many years in the Trucking Industry. I think it was started in the 1920’s. Mostly it’s taught to CDL drivers. Very simple guidelines to follow.
Make sure they see you.
Keep your eyes moving.
Leave your self an out.
That’s just a few of their sayings. I’m not a CDL holder but My Dad (God rest his soul🙏🏻) was the safety Director of a large trucking company for years.

I wore a hi-vis jacket during my first long distance ride last year and now I strongly recommend wearing one. Especially when on the highway. The number of drivers I could see doing doubletakes as I approached and passed them was countless. There's no doubt to me my jacket caught their eyes giving warning that I was there. The number of vehicles pulling out in front of me has also cut down. Thanks for your advise coach and please continue to put out your videos which I enjoy.

I saw a Harley make a full throttle start from a red light and he lost his top rear storage compartment off the rear of his bike and on to the pavement upside down and sliding on the road.

SIDSYM (Sorry I didn't see you mate) is a real problem for motorcycling on two or three wheels. I drive a car as well as ride and I feel many drivers don't understand that when slowing down on a bike you have brakes, clutch, years and throttle to manage as well as up to 400kgs of mass with a big cruiser. They think a motorcycle is more like a bicycle and will stop easily. That said some riders do themselves no favours by dangerous behaviour and not making themselves visible. Lande splitting or filtering is a good idea but only if it is safe. All dark clothing and a blacked-out bike (the current trend) make riders very hard to see especially at dusk and at night.
Good video, great tips. Just to add to it as your riding and come up to a possible situation, always think ahead and think of an escape plan if the situation materializes. After a while it just come naturally. This will cut your response time.

Thanks Coach. Good stuff. I emphasize a couple of things to the cadets I teach, one is to be deliberate about what you are doing. You do need practice and you will perform how you practice. The other is situational awareness. You nailed it, as you are scanning, and that one little thing is out of place, figure out what that is.
Keep it up, been riding for almost 40 years, and appreciate all the tips I can get.

knew some of the same people .. what facilities did you work Coach Bob? I just sold my Goldwing and looking into Can-Am riding (better for my knee)
I was at MLU (Monroe, LA) and TLH (Tallahassee, FL). I also did a short stint with Evaluations in ASO (Southern) Region.
I guarantee ya we know some of the same folks. The FAA is pretty darn small over all!!!

@@CoachBob3 Great hearing from you Coach Bob - I spent part of my Navy life in Meridian, MS and that covers all of my southern exposure to Air Traffic Control. The rest was spent up north in Columbus, OH, and venturing throughout the Great Lakes Region before the massive change that made Air Traffic in Ohio part of the Central region run out of Dallas Forth Worth - before retirement I spent 12 years working in Quality Control which made me connect with a lot of people as well - a friend who once worked with me in CMH, Will Wright did some time in the southern regional office - also a good friend was the manager in Charlotte before he passed, Prostel Thomas, everyone called him "Tee". I have another friend who spent time with me in the Navy, David Scaffidi .. he manages Miami Center, which pretty much ends my southern connection, except for Greg Poole - I last heard he might be in Florida working somewhere. I been working on 07 Piaggio mp3 250ie every since 2021 and I have been seeing a doctor for cTPSD disability from injuries at work! My brother and sister wants me to stop riding my bike because to danger but I need get out of house you know why? CB3 🙏
Something I learned decades ago...If you can't see ahead of the vehicle ahead of you...BACK OFF! Yesterday, if I hadn't followed this rule, I would have rammed the truck ahead of me when he slammed on the brakes when a dog I couldn't see walked out into the road.
Another thing is people don't have pation wen they're in traffic is my way I make the move without checking the traffic, they don't want to way and that's why accidents happen because they don't fallow the traffic rules, some people's get the licenses from Kmart!
