One thing that we do for safety reasons is that we pass semis just as fast as we can... We do not hang out in that left lane visiting with the drivers LOL
We have a 2021 Spyder RT Limited . I installed Tric-Led light strips on the front running boards. They are white all the time. When you turn on your turn signals they change to flashing yellow. The cars take notice. Also added Tric-Led light strips to the rear of the bike.
"Be nice" !! Now that's the best advice to avoid road rage where there's no winners. 😁👍
Good info as usual Coach. Interstate mph in Utah is 80 and great sites wherever you travel.
Good video Coach. As you recommended pass vehicles Quickly. Especially Semi-trucks. When one sees the reminents of tire carcasses on the side of the road they often are from tire Blow-Outs. A semi truck tire blew out and hit my aunt and her boy friend last fall while on a three wheeler (not a spyder) and they still are in a rehab facility over six months later. This could be me or you while driving especially on the interstate. Don't daudle there, plus you are less likey to be in their blind spot. This video reminded me of drivers ed. so many years ago with good instructors. One other thing to always think of, which isn't so bad when you are surrounded by steel, is where to drive to in an emergency situation. Those times when you might need to leave the pavement and head to the ditch to keep from hitting something deadly. Look for softer patches of grass and not the oak trees to aim for. Thanks for all the safety reminders Coach.
🥺🙏 for your family!
And remember, those big rigs are running RE-TREAD tires. That is why they come apart so easily, and frequently. THEY WILL KILL YOU. They should be illegal!
As Coach Bob says, if a retread comes apart while you are following or passing a big rig, you will
be lucky to come out alive!
Be nice!! 💜🤗
Hate the interstate during heavy traffic. We always taught our young truck drivers to keep their eyes moving. Always give space/ time to give you time to react to changing conditions. 5 seconds following distance is what we taught in perfect conditions The average driver only looks 3 seconds down the road. 10 seconds will give you time to react to emergencies. Great video and driving tips.
You know Coach Bob (3), there's just one, or two things that I would add.
Hand signals.
We are small - even with 3 wheels. I ride a '23 RT Limited in Dark Marsala Red. The color & M/C of my dreams having retired my beloved Moto Guzzi Cal III LAPD. We were all taught hand signals in riding school when we were kids. Even Clyde knows how to signal for a Right Turn Clyde thanks to another great Dirty Harry like movie. Too many numnuts leave their blinker on for so long we call them them the dumb guy signals. Blinka Blinka Blinka but when I issue a hand signal and a turn signal (most) drivers slow down and let me enter their lane.
In Florida ramps are long and easy to reach. I know, we are part time Florida residents. In Southern New England, ramps may come up out of the next tree lined turn and suddenly have a marked 20 mph hairpin turn on them. They are admittedly hard to hand signal for but we do need to slow down for them on the hwy.
I even use hand signals on regular roads even the stop, slow down one's. I'm 68 and started riding at 16. Hand signals work sometimes better than signals but always best with signals - when you can. Safety first at all times naturally!
What a good refresher on Interstate riding.... I love your tips!
Thank ya very much!!
This is a great video full of awesome riding tips for the interstate!!
Nice tips. I have had chairs laying on the road, and ladders too. Cali street scene approves 👍
My Team Oregon class (to get my endorsement) taught a basic strategy that if if you follow it and get comfortable with it really helps to have a safe and enjoyable ride. They use the acronym ‘SIPDE’, scan, identify, predict, determine, execute.
Scan: Look for hazards and potential hazards about 10 seconds ahead of you. Know what’s around you.
Identify: Identify what the hazards are and what are NOT hazards.
Predict: What could happen if…
Determine: If a hazard does occur what are your safe options to avoid the hazard.
Execute: Be prepared and execute the emergency measure if the hazard happens.
This is a bit of a simplification as the hazards can vary, but it’s a great method to be ‘one’ with your ride.
Courtesy and common sense are very rare commodities on the highway. Thanks for the review of road strategies.
Scanning is a very good way to describe the way we should ride...
Very good content. I deal with interstate traffic ALL THE WAY AROUND. On my bike, in pick up, and in my tractor trailer. Another reason why you should never follow close is because you cannot tell if the person in front of you is about to straddle something in the road.
I often times find myself, because I drive trucks so much, driving my pickup truck and riding my bike using a lot of the same methods that I use in my truck. So you are correct. These techniques applied to all vehicles.
Almost feel did that video for me from my FB post this week...LOL. As always good information. We managed to stay of the interstate for six months / 2500 miles because we could. Backroads ar emore fun for sure. Love the Spyder sooo much better on the interstate than my old Goldwing GL1500. Amazing how good the syder feels at high speed. Dont ever comment much as we watch the videos on the TV. Enjoyed riding some of the Tallahasse backroads. You mention watching for deer several times.....we had a incident with a cow on the loose.
I like that you mention a key safety technique of keeping "air" between the cycle and other vehicles. I read Sonny Barger's book on riding and two key takeaways were that every vehicle is out to "murder" you and to be aware of that fact, the second was to keep air. Nice Job Coach Bob!
😎drive friendly. Chin up wheels down.
"Why would he do that? Because he's stupid." - earned my like with this sentence lol
Thanks for the great video coach Bob! Its just what i needed to hear and be reminded of. Keep up the great work!
Nice video, Coach Bob. All good tips.
I love your out look on life and family. I purchased a Can-am spyder 2023 and I'm having trouble with going from 52 years of riding a motorcycle to a spyder. It's the steering or the over steering your videos help but I'm still working on it
Great tips! Thanks Coach Bob
Kind courteous and gracious vid as always .Great winter for riding up north in Windsor 🇨🇦 .i no the snowmobiles are sad but us 3 wheelers are lucking out big time little or no rain or snow.and sunshine instead of gloom time .Be happy ride safe 👨🏻🦳🇨🇦
Coach! What's up! I finally jumped on I-35 here in Texas around the Georgetown/Round Rock area after avoiding it for a while, as I've found local routes I can take instead. All of the points you made in the video are what I have in use - one challenge we have here is short on-ramps which make you rev up fast. I'm finally getting ready for a long distance (Albuquerque) round trip on my Spyder in April. Looking forward to eating up miles on I-10 and I-25 using cruise control.
Hey Bob, great video! One thing I would add, when I'm on the interstate at speed I am always watching for vehicles stopped by the side of the road. It seems that along I75 here in Sarasota County, where I most frequently ride, often I am passing some sort of vehicle stopped in the emergency lane for what ever reason. As I approach first I quickly check the left lane behind me for an escape route. Then I am constantly, quickly monitoring the vehicle watching for movement of any kind. Especially if the escape route to my left is not available any movement by the stopped vehicle could possibly be the end of me. You must be ready to react if a stopped vehicle begins to move, and you must be aware of what is around you so you have options.
Thanks for the advice I just got my Spider after more than 50 years on 2 wheels and a new adventure begins
Important tips for ryding safe on the interstate or highway for that matter
Great video Coach Bob
The merging varies from state to state. In pennsylvania, we must yield to the traffic that is already out on the interstate. Traveling in canada, we learned that there is a thing called a zip merge where everyone takes turns whether you're already on the highway or you're entering onto the highway.
Florida makes interstates look awesome. Great, flat roads with very little traffic. The interstate experience can be quite different around big cities. Merging at high speed was the very last lesson I taught my children. It is like a graduate level course and I did not want to scare them away from driving by getting them on an interstate too early. You are right, they are a necessary evil to get us across this vast land of ours. So far, I have managed to avoid them on my Spyder but my plans for the future has me hoping to take my Spyder far and wide and the will become a necessity. Great survival tips today! Thank you, Coach!
Florida has 1500 miles of interstates sarasota to tampa is 2.5-3 hour drive on weekdays, it's about 48 miles it took me 90 minutes to 6 miles this past tuesday. not all interstates are created equal. I won't even drive in my car on I-4.
Clearly you’ve never been on I75 in Florida…..brutal!!!! Light traffic my foot 😂
Looked rather light (to me) in the videos. I am sure it gets worse. After > 30 years in Atlanta, I have still never seen traffic that light on the interstates, even late at night. I did have the privilege of driving to Tampa in January and I was impressed at the quality of Florida highways. Very well maintained!@@boonchilla
Great video.
Thanks!
Thanks so much. I really appreciate your generosity!!! 👍👍👍
as always great advice coach,
All good advice.
Great advice as always
I'm am so trying to overcome my anxiety of driving over 60 mph. And so avoid interstates. Obviously that limits my participation in my club's organized rides.
I did get on an interstate once on a club ride. My anxiety increased, the longer I was on it. Wish I knew how to get over my fear.
Can you find a time where traffic is low and go by yourself or with one other rider? Are you ok in a car on the interstate as far as not having anxiety?
Great advice... as always.
Thanks brother!!
Good job coach Hope your daughter is doing better 👍
A few tips from a 20 year truck driver (UPS).1. Please do not cut in front of these big trucks to squeeze in that spot, that’s our breaking zone. 2. NO bright lights at night, truck drivers hate that. 3. Cell phones down Eyes up. And with that y’all drive safe.
Good advice! Thank you! 🤗💜👌
Coach Bob, make sure you don't run out of blinker fluid! I see too many vehicles that run out! I always get the Costco size jug to make sure i never run out! 😂😂
😂😂😂
Great Video there Coach, everything you mention is relevant to all countries, should be , mandatory for everyone who is going to learn how to Drive/Ride all helpful
Yes, you are a 100% correct. Always scanning g the road 360° every time out on the public roads or interstate. Jusymt never know. Make it as a good habit and it is your second nature.
Great video. BTW, why you don't use 2 wheels?
I added a brake flasher.
Thanks for the life saving tips Coach.
Had a muffler come out from under a truck in California on the Oakland Bay Bridge in heavy traffic. No choice but to try to jump it. Not fun being airborne in traffic. Seat vinyl had a good pucker!😂 Also watch out for oil slicks! Be well Bob!
When you live in a metroplex like Dallas/Ft Worth you learn to ride on the interstate fairly quickly. You have to use the interstate for about 30-45 minutes just to get out to find back roads. Unfortunately the speed limits in Texas seem to be a suggestion and most drivers are going 10-15 over the limit. Also plenty of pickup trucks and 18 wheelers on the roads.
Just be careful on the road😊
Good video thanks @CoachBob3. Yes, when on the interstate I do a few things. Ride like I am invisible, put myself in situations where I have room to see and react, and be assertive (not aggressive) in putting myself in safer positions/situations. We have to pay more attention than those cages around us - right?!
Sound advice for interstate riding. Another good tip for you; when you start feeling tired, pull off the interstate and rest up. Being tired or fatigued slows your reflexes and attention, and that makes you a road hazard for everyone else. Stop, rest, and resume later or, better, the next day. Cheers Coach!
Lane position one also puts your head in front of the driver behind which makes you more visible
That is one sweet jacket! Is it a summer riding jacket? It looks very comfortable. I like its visibility features, vital when you ride interstates
Had a couple get killed near Statesville,NC, when a box of blankets fell off and got wrapped up in the motorcycle 😢.
I like riding on the Interstate Coach. Mainly if I will be going a great distant, set the cruise and roll. My wife on the other hand hates it, in or on any vehicle.
Thank you Coachbob for taking the time to make this video. I just made my 1st real road trip to Arizona from California on my Spyder. Happy to I used all of your advice on my trip here, but I could be better using my blinker. I will practice that on my return trip! 😁
👌🤗💜
What a great video. All the advice applies to every country I can think of that has fast lane roads. Here in the UK motorways or leave if you don’t know what you’re doing, but they don’t teach it as part of education when you’re going for your license. I remember the first time I drove in a car on a motorway. It was scary as hell. Thank you, Coach Bob.
Going to catch some win after while. It’s gonna be 75 today in 😊😊😊😊😊😊Broussard.
Interstate driving doesn't bother me, but being blown around by the big trucks can be intimidating.
And remember, those big rigs are running RE-TREAD tires. That is why they come apart so easily, and frequently. THEY WILL KILL YOU. They should be illegal!
As Coach Bob says, if a retread comes apart while you are following or passing a big rig, you will be lucky to come out alive!
Not just retreads. A brand new tire can explode.
I-95 presents its challenges given usual heavy traffic we have in VA. I-81 is very dangerous as most traffic consists of tractor trailers going faster than the speed limit.
Bob..the RT limited had a couple of years of bad bikes to avoid..2014-2018 ..not sure..how many kms or miles are on your trike..good video Bob.. be safe😊
Don’t drive fast, don’t drive slow, drive half-fast! 😉😎🤣👍✌️
One last thing Coach: interstates are not race tracks. Speed limits are not just suggestions, they are for your safety .
South Dakota head 80 miles per hour and I think Montana also 80 mph...
Could you cover riding with a group of motorcyclists on the interstates?
My biggest pet peeves are people that stop in left turn lanes (no stop sign) and there is nothing coming...
When you mentioned the flashers it brought up a question. What do you recommend carrying in the way of flares, safety triangles, etc. ?
Using your blinker in Baton Rouge, La. is dangerous. When those idiots see a blinker, they think it means to block that lane.
A topic I stress to fellow riders is keeping your cool. Getting cut off and someone tailgating you happens a lot here in New York State. I actually quit riding for a couple of years because of so many close calls. Now I usually ride during midday hours Monday through Friday to avoid heavy traffic.
Be visible. I run with all my lights on the interstate.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So I am a heated person? I drive the speed limit. When I am in my Jeep herein California the truck speed limit is 55 mph. So most of the time I drive my Jeep at 55. If I drive my Jeep at car speed limit I get 13 mpg at 55 I get 19 mpg.
I wear my helmet covers from Moto loot lol…. If they can’t see a giant cat head riding beside em, then that’s sad 😂
I try really hard to avoid the Interstates on the Spyder. Interstates are my least favorite favorite roads on a motorcycle.
If you have a deer go across in front of you you may miss hitting him but more times than born it isn’t alone and his buddy will be coming across right behind him
Hey Coach, I also have a 2019 white Can Am spider. I’m pretty sure you never upgraded your sway bar to the Baja Ron everyone talks about. So many positive reviews I’m kind of considering it. Is there any truth to how much improvement it actually does?
I have a 17RTL with the BajaRon sway bar installed.
It is a big improvement over the stock bar. Keeps down the leaning in curves and improves handling.
Do it you won’t be sorry. 😀
@@Partzman23 💜👌🤗
Totally agree with partzman on the sway bar... I have had mine for 3 years and it makes a huge difference... Not just in the turns but also out on the interstate... You just feel like you have more control.
👍😅
Did you buy a new spyder
Scanning is a very good way to describe the way we should ride...
