- The Minnesota Commercial Railway rosters a unique, and rare MLW RS18. The 83 was built back in 1958 for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and is still in active revenue service with the MNNR. While it typically stays on the Hennepin Job, it does see service on other assignments such as the Hugo Job.
In this video we'll watch this RS18u working on the Hugo job on a hot summer day. The train puts on a smoke show as it lugs its short, but heavy loads, along some rough track on its way east. The friendly crew gives us a few waves, show with the locomotives K3L horn. Along the way, we'll see the train pass through some new locations in Vadnais Heights, meet the Canadian National, and make its way back.

Nice to see engineer acknowledge the film guy
Sure was, and the crew was very friendly! Thank you for the comment, and watching!
This locomotive was made to last.
Also, I love the sound of the horn
They keep going and going! The horn really is something else; thanks for watching!

That horn is the star of this video.
It really helped to make it more memorable! I hadn't shot this unit in a while, and that horn was a treat. Thank you for the comment, and for watching.
Engineer put on a great show!
You lucky, lucky boy!
I was very lucky to get this! I almost didn't go for it either, but I'm glad I did looking back. Thank you for watching!
A nice classic, like the old Canadian specs with the cab bells and classic horns
It even has its class lights too! Thank you for watching, and the comment.
Another great video. Got to love a smokin Alco in 2021 in regular service!
ALCo's in 2021 never get old, especially with a great sounding horn and smoke! Thanks for watching!
We have one of these ex-CP Rail RS18u's #1803 here on the West Chester Railroad, a tourist line just outside of Philadelphia. My oldest daughter and I were treated to a cab ride in it years ago. Great locomotive. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the info, and very good to know. I wasn't aware that there were too many of these units still operating.
Always love videos of this engine. A feast for the eyes and ears!
I am a huge fan of this locomotive, notably when its smoking a bit! Thank you for the comment, and watching.
I saw horn in the title and clicked on this video faster than the speed of light
Horn clicks be strong! 💪😎 Thanks for watching!
What a great video! You captured the whole trip. Good to see you as well.
Glad you enjoyed it, and it was great to see you along the way as well. You got some great shots of this guy too!
Nice videos I subscribed
Great video and catch! K3Ls are certainly a nice horn as well, got some down here on the ATN on a trio of GP40-2LWs.
Yes they are, and those horns have a wonderful sound to them! I appreciate the comment, and thanks for watching!
Where are the armed guards to protect all that lumber.
They are following in a high rail. ;p. In all honesty, this job has been moving a LOT of lumber in the last months, and even running extras. Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Thought the same thing, lol. Train needs one of the armored cabooses on the end!
Awesome catch and video.
Thank you very much, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@SD457500 You are very welcome.
>>>OMG !
Thank you for taking the time to share this post!
A classic working hard, putting the "wood" to it. Nice horn.
Thank you for the kind comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
That poor old girl had some bad locomotive breath.
Thanks for the comment, and watching! I think its turbo is starting to go too.
@@SD457500 likely yes. Locomotive breath is also a song by Jethro Tull 😃
So, let's say you're a guy who lives in Hastings and you want to make a trip or two up to hopefully get some field recordings of one of Minnesota Commercial's Alco locomotives at varying power levels with a minimum of horn and highway noise - are there any days, times and locations you'd recommend?
Hello! I would recommend The Hennepin Job; this is currently runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. They typically start around 0700 and have recently had the RS27 or MLW RS18. It should be noted though, that the RS27 is currently out of service, and I believe only the RS18 is the only ALCo running. Lots of industrial areas, with minimal highway noise, and horns.
great video i caught it when it was comming back were you caught it in the first clip
Thank you for the kind comment, and watching! I saw your video, and glad you were able to also get them.
Hi
I'm putting together a CZcams video on the MLW rs-18. Would it be ok if I used some of this footage?
