Iron chelation therapy is used when you have a condition called iron overload.
Iron overload means you have too much iron in your body.
How Iron Overload Happens
It can be a problem for people who get lots of RBC transfusions.
Since RBC contain iron, so each time you get RBC transfusion ...you are putting more iron in your body.
Now the thing is Your body can't excrete extra iron.
So This iron can build up in your vital organs and may injure them over time.
There are two iron chelators currently available and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):
Deferoxamine (Desferal®), given subcutaneously (under the skin)
Deferasirox (Exjade® or Jadenu®) a once-daily oral chelator, available as a dispersible or film-coated tablet
