  • Tamsulosin (Flomax) is a selective alpha1A blocker that acts on prostate and bladder resulting in relaxation. One of its main use is in the treatment of BPH, the later being a condition in which prostate enlargement results in urinary retention in the patient. In such situation, Tamsulosin can selectively relax prostate and bladder resulting increased urinary flow. It is well known under the brand name Flomax.

After having to be catheterized to even pee while in the hospital, the hospital doctor put me on this drug. I got instant relief and that has continued for about 9 months now. I have had zero side effects accept for possible light headedness at times when first standing up. This is a minor issue which the doctor warned me about when I started on it. I found all GP doctors willing to prescribe it too. My peeing is pretty close to normal while on this medication. And the flow starts right away.

Thank you doctor for the valuable information on Tamsulosin. I am taking it since last one year so, before going to bed as advised by the treating urologist. It has helped me in reducing frequent urination in the night. But in the day time, suddenly the urge for urination is felt, which could be even after an hour or so. Flow has almost restored to normal. Thanks.

I took this for three years and it caused crippling GERD that made me double with pain from the free flow of stomach acid into the oesophagus and the pain from the burning was sickening. I stopped taking it when I realised the action it has and the GERD was a lot better but there is damage to the sphincter that is not as bad but still there in a lower level.

Does the relaxing effects of Tamulosin wear off after constant use?

Most likely just means your BPH is far past the point of a simple "relaxant" and needs more aggressive treatment like actual shrinkage of the prostate.
