The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed, long-endurance ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide array of anti-ground oriented weapons that are integrated with sophisticated sensors, navigation, and fire-control systems. Unlike other military fixed-wing aircraft, the AC-130 relies on visual targeting. Because its large profile and low operating altitudes (around 7,000 ft) make it an easy target, it usually flies close air support missions at night.

I've listened to these things at night, in training and in combat zones. And it's terrifying if you're awakened from a nap. You hear a plane, hear the brrrrp, but then you'll hear and feel the wind before hearing an explosion. Fucking love it.

The enormity of the kinetic energy that these ordnance unleash upon their targets is difficult to fathom, due to the noise and minimal activity happening in the loading bay. And by "minimal" I mean considering the power of these weapons. Especially when the energy is invariably on a human body. Such a terrible ending for someone, justified or not, to be hit by such a large, hot, sharp, explosive "bullet".
To say they are dead before they know what hit them would be a true statement, but I think that would only apply to the first person that happen to be hit by the first "bullet" that lands. Everyone after, I think would not be fortunate enough to get that "luxury" and would experience a horror that words would fail to explain.
That being said, i don't understand why weapons of war always held a deep interest, an admiration if you will, to me ever since I could remember. Jets, tanks, "Gatling" guns, just military weaponry in general. Hell, even nukes (which terrified me to the point of upset stomach every day in the mid to late 80's) are just fascinating to me. Yet I wish they never existed.
Thanks for "listening". This was somewhat therapeutic.

The biggest problem with dedicated ground attack aircraft is two-fold... you can't use them unless you control the air, and all effective AAA is suppressed (alternately, the enemy has neither capabilities to worry about). The 130 has a big signature, and is a sitting duck for enemy fighters, AAA of 37mm or larger, and shoulder fired missiles like the Strela. The planes and crews took big time loses flying the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
That equipment is so cool. Amazing firepower.

Love it! I was on the test team for this Beast. Got to fly on it during early test missions. It had teething pains, but once the bugs were worked out it was deadly.
My buddy worked on an AC 130 crew. He kept some of those 105mm shells, welded handles and engraved my name on one as a wedding gift at my bachelor party, damn thing holds like 8 beers. Great fuckin gift. 🤣

The AC-47 was the Spooky, the AC-130U is the Spooky II. The AC-130U is also the only version that was built from the start as a gunship, all others were conversions from trash haulers.
