I saw the fight live and even then i thought Buchanen was looking for a disqualification. I´d never heard of Duran at that time. Looking back now i realise that Buchanen put up a brave fight but he was no match for one of the absolute greatest fighters ever.
It was simply not his night, he was greatly surpassed by the Panamanian Demon
After retirement, when asked who was his toughest opponent, Duran said "Ken Buchanan" without any hesitation.
I am not doubting you but I heard him say DeJesus when asked once. DeJesus did knock him down a couple of times and he gave him his first loss. But Buchanan hung in with Duran in a brutal 15 rounder. I would say Buchanan took Duran's shots better than any lightweight. It was relentless and non stop. Dont get me wrong Ken had his moments as well. It was a great fight. I hate the way it ended but Duran was well ahead on the score cards. A disqualification would not happen on an accidental low blow. But it happened so fast the ref didn't even see it. If the ref had seen it Ken would have got a few minutes to recover and a point would have been taken from Duran. But it was a tremendous fight between two all time greats. Lost in the controversy is just how great of a fight it was.
At a function put on by the Buchanan family…
The first fight I ever saw Durand
Didn't realise that a right hook to the testicles was a legit way of winning.
I win well, it's more I was winning almost the entire fight
Perception is reality. The only way to get out of this ass whooping and save face was resorting to off Broadway histrionics, just 8 city blocks north of MSG btw 😂
It's not. Not being able to answer the bell is though. If the ref had seen the low blow Ken would have got a few minutes to recover. He would have to continue after a few minutes or lose though. But since the ref didn't see it he only had the word of Ken's corner. For all he knew Duran landed a clean shot on the break and the corner was saying it was a low blow. It is very unfortunate. Duran was too far ahead on points for Ken to win without a knock out and he certainly was not going to do that. So even if the low blow hadn't occured Duran would have won. If the ref saw it and let Ken have a couple of minutes to recover one of two things would have happened. Ken would have continued and finished the fight which would have been a unanimous decision for Duran. Or if after a few minutes Ken could not continue Duran would have won by knock out. A fighter gets a few minutes after a low blow and that's it. Watch Holmes/Cooney sometime. Holmes got hit with several brutal low blows and each time got up to 5 minutes I believe. I think he only took a minute each time. Cooney did lose a couple of points for excessive low blows though. They were not intentional but nevertheless he really was careless with his punches.
I honestly think Buchanan could have continued but him and his corner were so angry about the low blow not being called it created a lot of confusion. The ref had under a minute to make a decision. He asked several times if Ken could continue and they never said yes. Ken looked bad on his stool. Once the corner realized that the ref didn't see the low blow they needed to quickly say yes my man can continue. If he really couldn't than that's a different story. I don't think they even asked him though. The corner was angry and I totally understand why, but in that moment they had to get their guy ready to answer the bell or he was going to lose by knock out. Maintaining a level head in a situation like that is the mark of a great chief second. Spending the whole time trying to convince the ref it was a low blow didn't help Ken at all. But like I said he was too far behind to possibly win the fight at that point.
Lost in all the controversy is just what a great fight it was. Although Duran was ahead by 5 or 6 rounds, Ken put up a tremendous fight and took everything Duran threw at him while having his moments too. I don't know of any other lightweight in history that could have taken that many shots from Duran and still be fighting in round 13. Ken was as tough as it gets. That is also why I think he would have continued if his corner would have sent him out.
@@luisvazquez7015 Lol. Madison Square Garden was once where the greatest fights were held. As a Texan, I finally got to go see it a couple of years ago. All I could think was the iconic words,"live from Madison Square Garden". The venue itself is nothing special. But the history is.
I don't think Ken was faking but I agree he was way too far behind to win. Duran controlled the action the whole fight. Ken had his moments. It wasn't a shut out but I think Duran was up by a at least 6 rounds. It could have been more but I am giving the champion the fairly even rounds.
Duran beat his ass from the opening bell🤣🤣🤣
You cant disqualify Duran because the ref didn't see the low blow and it occurred while his arm was pushed down by the ref. The only strange thing is thst the ref ruled that Ken could not continue. I never saw him ask the corner if he could continue. I think he probably could have but the ref saw he was in agony and stopped it. If they would have went to the score cards Duran wins. I think Ken needed a knock out to win and that was not going to happen. I wish a rematch would have occurred myself. I think Duran would have beat him agsin but without the controversy.
But mad respect to Ken because he took all Duran hit him with and kept fighting. Not many lightweight could have taken that much punishment and still be fighting like he was.
En una entrevista lovianco dijo que en el once iba a detener la pelea por el castigo que estaba recibiendo bucanan
Es increíble la diferencia de estatura de Durán contra casi todos sus oponentes.
si es verdad
Definitely a low blow there haha
Con o sin golpe bajo, Durán iba ganando ampliamente.
Low blow was a foul but it was not like Buchanan wasn't asking for it either. The only other result that could've come out was a No Contest because there was no way that Duran was gonna lose this fight
And Buchanan as a warrior would have preferred to lose so than win with a disqualification I am sure he as a warrior would have preferred to die than win with a disqualification and I respect him for thinking so
Yes, Duran was the better fighter. Yes, that was definitely a low blow, it was obvious, brutal AND after the bell. He should have been DQ'd.
It seemed retaliatory because of the low blows Buchanan was throwing during the fight.
Buchanan aguantó mucho castigo Duran ya demostraba que iba a llegar muy lejos.
Looks like at the end Buchanan got whacked a couple of times way after the bell.
It wasn't Buchanan's Night
Buchanan was a true fighter
Yo tengo un libro de Ken Buchanan con su firma e várias fotos con Myke Tyson fotos de su Victòria en 1965 1971
De verdad amigo bueno eso debe de ser una reliquia

Duran was the Man ❤
Este Durán habría sido una seria amenaza para otros grandes Pesos Ligeros como Shane Mosley, Oscar De la Hoya, Pernell Whitaker, Benny Leonard, Joe Gans o Ike Williams.
De verdad que si amigo
Nobody beats Duran in prime
Totally Right
Duran the best
And if they do , he’ll knee them in the nuts
@@queenslander954 Duran deserves all the respect he is a legend a great in history
Cursing & Cussing on his way to the dressing room after Hagler fight...he wanted More...
Why didn't Ken's team ask for a rematch?
For some reason he didn't want revenge
Ken yet a good solid boxer couldn't handle that power or rage of Duran in his prime was a swarming inferno and Ken knew a punch there would be a good time to fold if I'm getting beat up and have hit the guy with my best shots man I get hit in the balls or anywhere near I'm a crap out pass out in agony to get an oscar ECT whatever
It just wasn't Buchanan's night, friend, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but you have to keep going, nothing more.
Never understood why there wasn’t a rematch.
I don't understand it either and before there weren't so many obstacles for them to fight again.
Ken showed cowardice, couldn’t take the non-stop beating and wanted to quit. Duran proved too much for him.
That attempted cheating by Ken to win by disqualification falsely claiming low hit and that comical rolling about on the canvas was too embarrassing to watch. That effectively put an end to Ken’s boxing career.
Btw, Ken wore his trunk very high, so every ok belly punch looked low, what a cheat!
@@daveoliver5838 where in this video does it show it wasn’t low? it also doesn’t show it was low though, but what it does show is that last blow was after the bell
so keep your mouth shut, armchair boxing expert🤣
@@reekler From the video we can’t tell, but the Referee in the ring was in the best position to see that punch land and he declared that it was legit, period. Watch closely, it was Ken who carried on punching after the bell went, he was wrong to do it, can’t blame Duran who immediately reacted with his own punches.
Watch and think before posting nonsense.
@@daveoliver5838 The Panamanian Demon won against a great boxer but that happens, you have good fights and bad fights
What amazes me is the butchering you made to the original video.
This is a highlight video champ.
No foul...he saw the Inevitable
The Panamanian Devil was what they called Duran in those days
Low blow 😮
hugely obvious foul - clear to see - but even without that Duran would have likely knocked him out in the next round.
Ken would of won this fight low blow should of been disqualified . I can see why Duran kept ducking the rematch , the Mexican bandit
How would Ken have won? Duran was way ahead at the time of the stoppage. It is very unfortunate it ended the way it did. Duran was in the process of throwing a punch as the ref was trying to break them. He punched Durans arm downward causing the punche to hit low. It was accidental and the ref didn't see it.

@@254OOPS What do you mean?
@@254OOPS Duran was up 10-2. If Buchanan won the last 3 rounds it still wouldn't make it a close fight.
@254OOPS se respeta su antipática postura contra Durán, pero se den ser objetivo : con o sin golpe bajo Durán estaba ganando ampliamente esa pelea.
No low blow,Duran had enough of this big goon Buccanan so gets knockout.
