Durans versatility shows. From the first bell hd felt thompson was stronger and hits hard. And instantly adjusts.Duran boxed him
cleverly, still going forwards , still physical, aggressive and pressing the fight.Anyone who says he was just a slugger at 135, need to watch this , de jesus 3 was a clinic too
R.I.P Hector Thompson 1949-2020
oh he passed away. Sad. He was a great boxer
My personal GOAT
Durans counters where phenomenal...0.5 seconds after punches were thrown at him...such an incredible human being
Duran once told a reporter for me to lose in my house you'll have to kill me"
The temperature here in the ring was over 100 degrees, the humidity most had been high......Duran was an animal at this weight...never lose a fight in Panama...hector was a very strong fighter...he gave duran one of the hardest fights....
RIP Hector.
Duran was the best boxer I have ever watched. Not saying he beats every single great but overall talent and ability goes to him
You are a smart man. The simple truth is that Duran was a lightweight....plain and simple. His great fights with Leonard, Moore, Barkley etc were at weights that were well above his natural size. At 135 pounds, I believe he is the most complete fighter of all time and virtually invincible. The one loss to Dejesus was not at 135 pounds...Dejesus weighed in at 138. Duran never lost at 135 pounds. The man is a legend....just a ferocious machine in his prime.
@@orangescout1967 de Jesus weighed 138.duran 140 too
Hey dumbass, his natural weight as a 20 yr old was lightweight. He spent most of his career at Lightweight starving himself to make weight until he could no longer do it at 27 or 28 yrs old. When he fought Leonard he was a NATURAL WELTERWEIGHT. When he fought Hearns he was a natural jr middle. When he fought Hagler he was a natural middleweight and actually needed to lose weight for that fight. A man’s body NATURALLY outgrows the body he had in his early 20’s. By your logic every fighters natural weight class was the one they began their career or championship fights at. That’s silly. Why Duran fans give this luxury to Duran and nobody else is comical.

Indubidubly 🙂
Hector Thompson,
A Great OZZIE Champ I remember him well. He Had A Big Punch,
From Memory He Killed A Couple Of Boxers In The Ring.
R.I.P 🙏✝✝🙏
He did, Tragically, two of Hector Thompson's opponents, one in 1970, Roko Spanja and one in 1976, Chuck Wilburn--passed away after being TKO'ed by Thompson. and I wonder if that made him overly cautious with that on his conscience. Thompson was a great fighter. Although Duran claimed an eighth round TKO victory, he was left with a badly swollen left eye and was reportedly taken to hospital with a broken rib.
@@alanbstard4 Spot on the money mate.👍
Absolutely
Hector Thompson came to Panamà showing on T.V that he eats raw meat, saying that he was a savage fighter, fought a good fight but still became a statistics in "El Cholo." Repertoire.
Thompson damaged Duran's ribs towards the end of the 7th round when he hit him with a right hand rip. Duran noticeably doubles over after he was punched. I doubt Duran was smiling after that particular blow. However, Duran' powers of recovery were remarkable, as we see in round 8.

Not a big Duran fan, but this and the de Jesus rematch is one of my favorite fights in boxing.
Roberto Duran is the leyend💪☝️
Thomson's mistake was standing toe to toe. Never test the ego of Roberto Duran!
Probably the way Hector was man. After all, two of his opponents died from injuries in fights with him sadly. I don't think he was too scared of anyone, but of course as you say, his undoing here. Duran one of the best in the sport all time, Hector just wasn't good enough to beat him. Not disgraced however.
@@marknorris1381 Although Duran claimed an eighth round TKO victory, he was left with a badly swollen left eye and was reportedly taken to hospital with a broken rib.
@@alanbstard4 he said in the post interview fight with Suzuki duran said that if it would've went the distance he would've lost cause Thompson was so tough
That wasnt it duran barley did his trademark inside fighting instead boxed beautifully on the outside and mid if he went toe to toe maybe things could've gone bad for duran because after all Thompson did kill guys in the ring
@@criscuellar1461 he was and I wonder if H T pulled his punches a bit. HT had killed 2 men in the ring and it was a great concern to him. H T was extraordinary, but, congratulations to Duran for being one of the greats, a marvellous fighter
THE MOST HARD FIGHT OF DURAN IN 135 POUNDS...THOMPSON WAS A GREAT FIGHTER
great record Thompson
also 39-2....
He was so strong, he forced Duran to become the 'boxer'. Duran showed in this fight how he was more than just a brawler. He is jabbing and moving and boxing the stronger Thompson. You can see by Duran's reaction when the ref stopped the fight, that it took everything Duran had to take this guy out.
As an Aussie we were proud of Hector. He fought out my home town for a lot of his career, he was a hero to us kids. By no means was he disgraced here against one of the all time absolute best.
I’d say the first DeJesus fight was harder 😂. Buchanan too.
@@alanwest1067 nahh after the Suzuki fight they asked who was tougher(Suzuki or Thompson)duran said Thompson was so strong that if it went the distance he would've lost and Thompson was so strong he killed 2 men in the ring
Hector Thompson had some good wins . was a real good fighter with a lot of strength and some chin. But that left hook to the liver that froze him was a killer shot that set up the knockdown. Duran s body attack is unsurpassed. So many hard, accurate body punches worked into four, five, even seven punch upstairs/downstairs combos. Duran s defensive skill, already good here, would improve considerably over the next several years
Sugar Ray Leonard said Duran had surprisingly, good hand speed and quick reflexes, when they first fought.
Duran was gonna win that First fight to much for Leonard in experience. And to think Ali and Robinson doubted Duran
@@reycesarcarino4653 Ray Leonard thought he was going to win because he saw one of Duran's fights as a welterweight. Duran won, but he got hit alot against this nobody. Leonard knew he had quick hands, and felt he could beat Duran flat-footed, and that is how he fought Duran. Duran on the other hand said he trained for that fight, harder, than any fight of his career. He said he didn't do any drinking, or partying when prepping for this fight. And that is what helped him, as well as, Leonard underestimating Duran, win the fight.
What I love the most used to grab a fighter and turn them around
I think this fight was the more complicated Duran in 135 pounds , Thompson was a good opponent and brave!!!
When Thompson fighted with Pambele I Thought he won to the pride the "San Basilio de Palenque " the history was Pambele won the fight..
Después de esa pelea con Duran. Thompson no fue el mismo boxeador. lo mismo que Ray Lampkin y. Esteban Dejesus . Duran acabo con la carrera de muchos boxeadores.
***** boxerrecord of Thompson
87 fights Won 73 nkt 27 lost 12 6 by nkt and 2 draw.
Thompson was a good fighter and brave nothing more!!!
Ernesto Arosemena ¿DE DONDE TE SACAS ESTO?..DESPUES DE PERDER CON DURAN THOMPSON SE CORONO CAMPEON MUNDIAL
@@ciprianoderore4792 jamás Thompson fue campeón mundial. Disputó las 140 lbs con Pambelé y perdió. Solo ganó titulos australianos y de oceania.
fantastico nocaut de manos de piedra
Thompson did well but Duran was far too busy and landed far too often. One of Hector's great strengths was that he always breathed through his nose during fights and had great cardio. That made it very difficult to knock him down. Once Duran broke his nose it was game over.
Both boxers to their credit, did not hold or grab each other at any stage of the contest. Just pure skill. One of the purest world championship bouts you'd ever see.
The clinch is part of boxing .
This Thompson had all the skills of Duran but one. The killer punch
Thompson had a killer punch, he killed 2 of his opponents in the ring. In this bout he had Duran hurt at times and nearly closed one of his eyes. He was predominately a body puncher. But for his preparation he didn't have good quality sparring partners back home.
@@MrBITS101 You could see Duran was hurt a couple of times and that is a rare thing. He forced Duran to become the boxer because he was stronger than Duran. Usually we see Duran using leverage to force his opponent into the ropes. In this fight, It was Thompson doing the forcing of Duran to step back....very strong. Duran's boxing skills on display in this fight, that defense, the way he could be in range but like a ghost when you try to hit him and then Duran delivers back and always punishes.
@@MrBITS101 sadly true. Roko Spanja and Chuck Wilburn both died from injuries in fights with Hector. I was a kid in the city Hector was fighting out of at the time, I remember the Wilburn fight and aftermath well. I think for this fight they were trying to put Duran off by saying he was getting into the ring with an 'assassin', Duran however not the type of guy to be intimidated by anyone, regardless of how deadly they had proven to be in the ring, as Hector had.
A BEAST!!!
Duran vs Sanchez! That would've been something to see.
You must be crazy . Duran was beast , punch power unspeakable stamina , I don't see how can great Sanchez would win .
Durán lo hubiera matado.
Duran to strong and to powerful with great defense and chin for the GREAT Salvador Sanchez
It's all about rhythm for Duran. Rhythm and feints. Lulling opponents with the jab and then exploding with the 1-2.
duran looking well
I think this fight was a preparation fight of Duran before face Esteban de Jesus in Panama in 1974
+Alan B'Stard M P I think this fight was very hard for both fighters, but Duran has 24 year ago. He is in the plenty of carrier
+Alan B'Stard M P Remember to Esteban de Jesus other brilliant fighter
Chaves pelio con boxiadores d mucha menos calidad q con los q pelio Duran.
