Losing a title fight in a unanimous decision doesn’t get you an instant rematch. The only one who could have asked for an immediate rematch was Thiago Santos, but he couldn’t, because Jon destroyed Thiago’s ACL, MCL, PCL, and meniscus in both his legs.

No, according to Wikipedia neither of them were interim champion at the time of the fight. Tony had previously been interim champion 2½ years earlier, but had been stripped of the interim title due to inactivity.
That said, Big Nog defended his interim title (and lost) against Frank Mir at UFC 92.

Chael doesn't get it. John is irrelevant. Nganou was the champion, which defeat Stipe and then defended the title against Gane. Nganou won and then left the UFC. Then Jon fought the dude which lost the right to own the belt (Gane), so He became the HW fighter which won against the challenger which never had the title. Meanwhile later last year Paulovich and Aspinall fought as the two HW with better resumes to decide which one was the champion of the HW division. Ton Aspinal won easy and became the OFC HW champion, as easy as that.
Cyril is a mistmatch vs Aspinall and for sure we are more interested in a fight vs Curtis Blaydes or any other, but whatever...
