  • Arguably the most popular Doctor and companion team of the entire revived series of Doctor Who are coming back in 2023 for the 60th anniversary special. This is huge news for fans, a big play by Russell T. Davies, and it's got the fandom talking. So let's talk about what RTD might be up to and my thoughts on it.

    I kinda wish they’d do a full series with Gatwa before the 60th, feels a bit complex having the Centenary special (with old of companions coming back, two incumbent companions and a doctor leaving) followed by the 60th (a new doctor intro - possibly - old doctor(s) coming back)

    • @Elwaves2925
      @Elwaves2925 Před 2 lety +3

      While I do think a full series is off the table, we still don't know exactly what we're going to get. There is the theory of several specials in 2023, leading up to the 60th. Given that they've just started filming today, which seems quite early to me, it does lend a little credibility to it. So while it's complete speculation, we may get more than one special. Or of course, we may not. Who knows eh, who knows?

    There is something else, and if this is true, it's a brilliant move.
    Who's to say Mr. Gatwa WASN'T spotted when the leaks came out. It's entirely possible that people did see him but everyone focused on Tennant, and would have been looking for him.

  • @EvelynMadisonFaust
    @EvelynMadisonFaust Před 2 lety +5

    My inclination is (and has been for a while) that the 60th anniversary special will focus on new companion(s) interacting with any and all returning Doctors (in this case, Tennant); and the 14th Doctor won't appear until the very end, thus making the following episode (presumably the premiere of series 14) Gatwa's first full episode in earnest. This would give us plenty of time with 10 but also allow us to get acquainted with the new companion(s), who in turn, will take a back seat for 14's first episode so that Gatwa can steal the show. And yes, Donna returning does throw a new cog on the wheel, but I think this structure can still work even with an old companion in the mix.
    I realize that it kinda sucks to have to sideline the new Doctor for something as momentous as this, but I do genuinely feel like it's the most viable option to avoid Gatwa being overshadowed, just postpone his official reveal until the last ten minutes or so... This is what I am hoping for, at least.

    OR The Gatwa Doctor's first episode is his new regeration failing somehow, so he has to meet past Doctors to restore himself. Que clever editing of old classic Who scenes with the 14th Doctor in them acting opposite Hartnell etc, with new scenes filmed with Tennant, Smith, maybe even Capaldi and Whittaker.

    Regarding introducing a new Doctor in a multi-Doctor episode - the War Doctor was introduced this way (after a short introductory scene the episode before - likely less than what we'll see with Gatwa), and for my money I'd say it pretty much works. Granted, it's a different context, with the War Doctor being slotted in to explain parts of the Doctor's character as a whole, rather than an entirely new Doctor (and also the fact that I _do_ think Tennant was a little underused in that episode :P), but I think it shows that there is a possible working balance.

    Well based on the recording photos of Tennant on-set it seems he's with Jodie's TARDIS (Shorter Police Public Box Plate versus 9-12's, same length as Jodie's) so that does give a point to it being a Degeneration Story.
    Aka the Jodie degenerates into the 10th Doctor as a ramification of whatever happens in the Centinial, and if there are multiple specials leading it the 60th itself, maybe it's a mini-Series of sort leading to the 60th covering the doctor progressing to the point they are stable in the Gatwa incarnation.
    Either way, I do not like the idea of a multiverse story, as it'd have Gatwa introduced at the end of the Centennial and then we take a year+ gap between Gatwa's introduction and his first true episode which would be doing him dirty

    Just had an awesome thought….Tennant's Doctor shows up, excitedly tells Wilfred he's finally found a way for Donna to remember him safely, Wilfred is happy but wary, point to where you can see Donna and her husband….and we see him levering up a *very* pregnant Donna! Catherine Tate playing a *very* pregnant Donna would be so much fun! And at the end of shenanigans, the baby is born, and she tells the Doctor she's glad it isn't a boy, because it would be hard to name the baby after the Doctor, but since it's a girl, what would he think of naming her Rose? Cue Tennant looking close to tears of happiness. And then the modern-day story introduces us to Rose all grown up.
    It would give us a reason Donna wouldn't just run off with the Doctor once she got her memories back, when that was *all* she wanted to do just before he took them away. And it would work with the split story I advocated in another post, with Gatwa's Doctor storyline running parallel to a flashback story with Tennant and Tate. And maybe, just maybe, we could get a darn apology from the Doctor to Donna, along with an admission from Donna that she'd basically been begging him to let her die, and she's glad that he didn't, as a good anti-suicide message. As much as the loss of agency bugged me at the time, it basically *was* suicide Donna was begging for, and that's never sat well with me either. Too many failed attempts at suicide have bern grateful later that they'd failed. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Let's show Donna has a good life now, and is glad she isn't dead!

      Adding a reply to say, if it wasn't obvious, I had never heard of Yasmin Finney and had no idea she's trans! If they decide to acknowledge that in-story, then maybe Donna *does* name her little boy something goofy referencing Doctor, or maybe just John for his alias, and that's what keeps it a surprise until the end that Rose is Donna's daughter. Heck, that would allow them to let Rose interact with Donna and Wilf in the past, with only Rose knowing it's her family until she has to refuse to hold the new baby. ;-)

    You're worrying too much about Tennant overshadowing the new Doctor in my view - all he needs to shine is that one great scene.
    Tennant spent most of his first episode (the first Christmas Special) asleep in his jim-jams and then he got that one great scene and off we went into the next season.
    And if the Day of the Doctor had been followed by a season staring the War Doctor, after giving him multiple great scenes throughout, would anyone really have complained?
    Have confidence in the writer that, even if he's not in it much, Ncuti will get that one scene that, if he's got the acting chops to deliver, will be enough to bring people back.
    I trust RTD as a writer & I trust him instincts for casting people to deliver his scripts well - and have seen more than enough from the new run of Doctor Who to know how little screen time a new Doctor needs to pull in an audience.

    On a different note, I always thought it would be a nice story idea to have the main objective of an episode be to keep Donna from remembering. So instead of (or on top of) preventing an alien invasion, the doctor would have to try to keep Donna from getting involved. I mean this is tennant’s first outing as the doctor in 10 years, i wouldn’t say they’re relying on him. he’s willing to play the part again, a lot of the other actors might not be, who knows

    Series 14 with Ncuti begins production in November and shoots until July 2023. He is currently working on 'Barbie' and will then be filming 'Sex Education' over the rest of the summer. Series 14 airs in 2024. He is not in the 60th proper. The 60th consists of 3 Specials with Tennant and Tate

    I don't think this is what they are doing, but something I think would be really cool for them to do with Doctor Who would be to have a full series where for some reason or not the doctor is forced to travel with himself. Essentially making the doctor a companion to a doctor.

    Maybe 14 is gonna be exhausted from the regeneration. Luckily another incarnation is in the same time and takes care of stuff and helps Ncuti recover at the end

    I think itll go 10.2 -14
    So 13-10 again
    Use bringing 10 and donna back as a way to ease a general audience into the 14th doctor.
    Since for a lot of people that mightve been the last time they had strong memories of DW.

    Great video! I’m not as sure as you are that Tennant isn’t playing a future incarnation…as far as I’m aware Ncuti was reported as the 14th Doctor by BBC News, but never in the official press statements. His costume today and the fact he’s with 13’s Doctor adds fuel to the fire too. It would be an interesting approach to take…I guess time will tell!

    remmeber, both in Classic Who and New Who so far, all regeneration scense happen at the very end of the episode in order to build up the cliff hanger, stay tuned, drama.....i bet Gcuit Gatwas will be in the 60th anniversary....like all other doctors, the very last 30 seconds

    First let me squel a little. Sqeeeeee! They're bringing Donna back with her doctor. Squeegee!
    On to my questions. Didn't Capaldi work with RTD on the Pompeii episode. I would love to see David Tennent's doctor and Donna Recognize Capaldi's doctor as the stone worker who bought the Tardis in Pompeii. How would Doctor Capaldi explain why he had another man's body?
    Can't wait to see this special.
