    So I make the claim that Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor will be the first with facial hair, flatly forgetting about the War Doctor. That's on me.

      When 8 regenerated into War, they showed John Hurt's younger face didn't they? Sans facial hair? And the beard and mustache just grew as the Time War progressed? And Eleven also sported facial hair temporarily when he met Churchill, if memory serves me right. (Had to check YT for videos of this and found at least one in Day of the Moon... could swear I saw one about the Silence...)
      So somehow, you're right insofar as Fifteen is the first to have a moustache immediately after regeneration.

    I love how there is both a subtlety and a quirkiness to it. It's like Hipster academic. Like that dude who you see in a fancy café reading an obscure French novel and you think he is gonna be a pretentious ass but you speak to him and he is actually a really nice dude. That's the only way I can think to describe it.
    I like the colours. The browns and the orange. I like warm tones. I like the attention to detail like with the rings and the necklaces. Small details always help complete a look. It all works together. Nothing feels out of place but also they feel like things that would look odd if not together. Like they have to be paired together for it to look right. All together it just works perfectly. I love this look and I am very optimistic about this new era. It's gonna be really good.
    Also I kinda really want this outfit. There is an air of androgyny to it even more than Jodie's outfit had. I could see myself wearing that and feeling like a boss.

    He looks great, very dapper.
    It seems like most Doctors range between being lovable fashion disasters (sometimes to to the point of being iconic) OR obsessed with a specific accessory to the point where it really changes a look and makes it their own (like the trainers). If they DO seem put together, then it’s, like you said, anachronistically, like 1’s and 12’s (later on) Victorian aesthetic or 3’s dashing dandy. He seems more put together and closer to our contemporary than any Doctor I can think of except maybe 9.

      I find this costume interesting, because on the one side, I agree, I think he looks sharp. But I also despise the suit/trousers personally. It's just so much brown checked patterning and I really can't stand brown check. The orange top is my favorite aspect of the costume because it's brash in a similar way to 11's Bowtie and 12s magician's style jacket (the one with the bright red lining).

    My hope for this docter is that it's much more of a dectective docter. With an almost flamboyant quality yet with a tad bit of sassyness. I want the sonic and costume to look put together (aka I'd love a purple sonic). Almost like a mix of the 7th and 8th docter with a new quality of being almost chill yet alien. • @gamer3ed484
    @gamer3ed484 Před rokem +26

    I really like it. I’m always a fan of The Doctor having a long coat. That’s why I personally prefer Smith’s series 7B look to his main attire.
    I’m almost positive that the shirt will be variable, kinda like how Eccelston had different colored shirts under the leather jacket.
    It reminds me most of Tom Baker’s costume, since his vest was a similar plaid design. It looks a lot more Classic Who inspired than most New Who costumes.
    My only tiny gripe is a feel like it’s missing a weird little touch. Maybe a hat or scarf or bow tie. something a little alien looking.

      i agree! love the coat for the doctor, though part of me wants the look to be a bit busier. but also i'm absolutely sure we'll get variations on this outfit so i kind of feel like that'll just happen naturally at some point. capaldi's original outfit was very simple, and his style certainly evolved to a more choatic place. who knows what'll happen for this doctor! i have to say i love the nail tattoos. i wish there was a way to make them stand out more! but they're a nail accessory so naturally they'd be harder to spot, kind of like jodie's earrings.
      i think for me, the outfits only fully come together once i've seen the doctor running around in them a few times. seeing how ncuti wears it in action will probably be the biggest factor for me. excited for that!

  • @robmissen
    @robmissen Před rokem +11

    I'm glad you mentioned that Ncuti's outfit has a 70s feel. There are definitely hints of Tom Baker, such as the check trousers that Tom's Doctor also wore at times., the brown and orange colour palette and the mid-length coat that can be swished for dramatic effect. All that's missing is the scarf! LOL I think the outfit is just subtle enough to pass as "normal" in most situations... But also just anachronus to suggest a man out of time and place. Love it!

    My sense of this was in the trailer, we have some version of Ncuti in standard clothing, but unkempt and confused. Here we have someone who looks immaculately and colorfully dressed and knows EXACTLY what’s going on. Maybe the Doctor before and after remembering their identity?
    Also I like the idea of his looks evolving with various colorful, mod inspired outfits, maybe the sweater(vest?) is a constant? Even if the color changes (I really want him in pink at some point).

    • @Elwaves2925
      @Elwaves2925 Před rokem +7

      Not sure if you picked up on this but Gatwa's clothing in the trailer was Tennant's clothing. He just wasn't wearing all of it. So yeah, that seems like the immediate post-regen outfit before they establish the new incaration's identity.
      At this point who knows, the way it's being done is new and different. I'm still not convinced that Tennant is the true 14th Doctor, even though it was officially confirmed. RTD isn't above lying to the fans to try and hide things.

The video Gatwa and Gibson did showing off the new looks for the Doctor and Ruby was really fun! The two of them have amazing friend-chemistry together already. They bounce off each other so well, and look like they're having a ball. Gatwa's costume also has rings, which he showed off in the video - 3 on one hand and 2 on the other, I think. If the BBC isn't interested in putting money into advertising the new Doctor this far out (& going forward I expect most of the big Doctor Who news dumps will be handled by Disney / tied into Disney's event schedules anyway rather than coming directly from the BBC) RTD is stuck between getting information out ahead of any leaks and likely having no / limited budget to put together a dedicated press event or attend a fan focused event like a Comicon or similar.
    Realistically the bigger news drops you would prefer probably won't come until D24 around September next year - about 2 months before the first Special hits, because that's the schedule Disney works to and they'd probably only look to change it if it was too close or too far away from the Specials air date - but whether by accident or design it actually seems to tie in nicely, so Doctor Who will be rolled into their existing schedule's.
    Expect the drips to continue until then as a way to stay ahead of leaks and to give fan's something to chat about while we wait.

    • @M-E_123

      @@xjadit7826 BBC will just post stories about whatever Disney announce at their events - they won't be paying to fly the cast & crew out to Comicon like happened under Moffatt and when Jodie Whittacker was first announced as the Doctor - Disney will handle all of that now because those kind of events are mainly aimed at the US / international audience and were previously paid for by BBC America anyway (who no longer have a reason to advertise in Doctor Who).
      Going forward the the only thing I expect from the BBC is a press viewing / premiere for the specials and later the next series (complete with the usual interviews with cast & RTD) - which will be about a week or two before they air - and the odd blog post like we are getting now for anything they think might leak.
      That would still be far more than the BBC does to hype up any of their other shows - usually it's just organising interviews with the cast and writers / show runner and sending out advanced press copies of the episodes - but I think they'll want to try and make a splash in the British press with Tennant coming back shortly followed by a new Doctor, so they'll stretch their budget a bit.

      @M-E_123 Před rokem

      @@xjadit7826 you clearly pay very little attention to how the BBC promote their other shows that do not have an international audience on a BBC affiliated channel.
      A continuity announcement over the end of the last episode ("Doctor Who will be back later this year") followed up by a trailer with a release date a couple of weeks before the show drops is exactly what the BBC do for all their other UK focused shows - which is what they did for the Sea Devils and Regeneration specials shown this year - apart from that you get some interviews in the Radio Times that drops a week before the air date, or if they are really making an effort some interviews in UK newspapers (again about a week before the air date), and maybe an earlier trailer a month before the one with the release date which name's the month it will be shown in (so a trailer in October saying "Coming in November", then in November we get an extended trailer with the full date & time) - and they send out press previews that may or may not be edited to avoid certain spoilers leaking (or again if they are really trying you'll get a London Premier which includes interviews with the cast / crew - and extra special shows will have someone from the cast / the writer as a guest on Graham Norton a week or two before the air date).
      Giving something (like the recent companion announcement) to Children In Need or Red Nose Day has mainly been a RTD thing since he gave them the first scene of Tennant talking to Rose post regeneration, Moffatt & Chibnall rarely bothered with it - and RTD is currently behind the recent drip feed of information through the BBC Blog and on Twitter, but the suspicion is that he's only doing that to get certain information out ahead of tabloid leaks.
      Either way the current level of communication being driven by RTD is already delivering far more promotion than any other BBC show gets - apart from that one time Peter Capaldi was announced as the new Doctor on the One Show.
      The other promotion we've had during New Who - Comicon appearances, interviews to non-UK websites / newspapers, press previews for non-UK websites / newspapers etc. - That was all organised by BBC America / other offshore partners, who have now all been replaced by Disney.
      It's now also a Disney co-production, so I expect it to be handled exactly the same as other BBC shows that have been co-produced with American companies.
      Look at His Dark Materials that started up again this month - HBO was behind the bulk of the promotion for that show and all we got in the UK was the BBC throwing out a trailer and release date a couple of weeks before they broadcast the first episode.
      This is what you should expect from Doctor Who going forward apart from when RTD goes rogue and tries some of his own little tricks to hype things up / get people talking (like when he "leaked" that Hugh Grant would be the next Doctor, just to get the UK tabloids talking).
      The BBC isn't going to start spending liscence payer's money on promoting Doctor Who to international audiences now, when it has never done so before - BBC America is a commercial channel who organised all that and paid for it from their own funds - that stops now they won't be making money from broadcasting the show and the UK focused BBC won't step into the breach - not when they have a replacement commercial partner who will be pushing it for their own purpose - the UK BBC will continue promoting Doctor Who as it always has, and this will continue to be in line with how they promote their other shows to the UK audience - which is to say they will be doing very little.

    I suspect we'll see a lot of small variants - Similar to Eccleston's jumpers but less subtle since it's both brighter and a lot more exposed (and also IIRC RTD isn't fond of 3/4 coats being worn at all times so we might see him out of the jacket and just in the jumper a fair bit)

    That being said I think it would have been nice if his outfit incoparated his African background by having an embroidered nehru jacket similar to the one worn by T'challa in Black Panther. I commented over on Tharries' channel. -- The new Companion's costume is OK, blends in, nothing extraordinary to me. Maybe she'll get different looks as they go on. -- The new Doctor's costume works well. Maybe he'll get different shirts. The orange isn nice. The necklace is a nice touch. Someone else suggested a question mark pendant, and I think a lapel pin question mark would work too. The tweed long coat and trousers remind me of David Tennant's and Mat Smith's looks, and the boots are a good touch. Will we get things like a scarf, sunglasses, or a cap or hat at times? Ncuti Gatwa can pull off lots of clothing choices and make them look good. He has a slightly wild or daring streak in his personal clothes choices. And Millie (I don't recall her last name yet) seems like she'd look good in most choices too. -- I'm very curious to see what. personality and range the new Doctor will have. Is he professorial, professional, at times? A little military or businesslike? How is he when he relaxes? What talents or interests? Music or playing an instrument or singing? All sorts of possibilities. This is going to be a future modern black man, used to cities and technology, and who knows what else. He's personable in real life. What about Millie's Ruby character? We know almost nothing yet, and from the couple of clips I've seen, I don't know what sort of personality her character will have. So this could be very interesting. What about other characters they encounter? Lots of possibilities. I'm excited, looking forward to seeing them. This is a good, low-key direction. Let's hope for great stuff upcoming.

    even though this doctor's outfit is pretty bold in terms of pattern and color, i feel like it reads as kind of a modern classic look that would pair well with a lot of different things because of its relative simplicity. like, you could add an extra layer under the coat, i could see this look with a scarf or a hat if they wanted to do sort of a one off thing in that vein, maybe even gloves or something idk. this is something i could easily see someone walking down the streets of manhattan or brooklyn in. he and ruby don't look out of place together in comparison to a pair like 11 and amy, which is really interesting to me.
    i didn't have anywhere else to mention this, but i'm pretty sure the fit of the jacket and slacks are slightly loose. originally i read this as kind of a trendy/modern styling choice, but i could also see it as the designers adding a slightly quirky touch to the suit. maybe it's even just a functional thing
    also! he has gallifreyan nail tattoos! that's what he referred to them as in a social media caption anyway. makes me wonder if that means anything for future exploration of the doctor's origins/relationship to the planet they were raised on, but only time will tell

I knew it was gonna be about time we also get a leak of the outfit or public filming. I believe the reason why John Simm's season 10 appearance was teased so much rather than a huge shock was because there were threats of it being leaked. Neil Patrick Harris had to be announced as part of the 60th because of the public filming in Bristol with David Tennant. David Tennant said in a interview recently that there's so much more about the 60th that we don't know. Everything already announced had to be announced purely because it was publicly filmed.
