    THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

You’re a lab assistant who got hooked up into messing with space time. Your experiment went haywire and a giant donut sucked in your whole lab and your partner, only for a dinosaur to pop out of nowhere and save you, before telling you in perfect english to trust him letting your partner get yeeted into the void. The dinosaur then disappears and fifty years later, while visiting the facility, you come across your partner, who hasn’t aged a day, and he casually takes you for a cosmic joyride because he’s now a god.

The paradox episode genuinely terrified me as a kid. The transdimentional creature was so scary, like... the idea of a man being trapped in or outside time, who just wants help but rapidly ages up everything he comes in contact with, not to mention his terrifying design and sound. Love it

    • @Birthday1313
      @Birthday1313 Před 2 lety +30

I found it sad for Hugo. If he was just looking for help and couldn't stop aging things and didn't know why it was happening, it would have been terrifying. I wonder if Paradox decided to take the younger Hugo/aged Hugo down, and taught him about the way time works (outside of time of course don't want the guy dying because it's taking over 100 years to explain the basics). Paradox is immortal because his existence is fully separated from reality/time, but Hugo or someone else bound to a time stream would possibly still age and die eventually despite his understanding of time mechanics.

When this episode dropped, Doctor Who was in the David Tennant years, where it was getting real popular, and where I was so in to it, I watched marathons regularly. So when I watched it, I instantly loved it, it's one of the best love letters to the show, while being it's own thing. In Omniverse, he even goes through a Time War, and dresses like a Pertwee/McGann mix, rather than a slight nod to Tennant's design with a suit and long coat.
(Also, I have to point out, David McCallum is a musician and composer and his most famous track, The Edge, was later sampled by Dr. Dre to give us to classic "The Next Episode"... It's just wild to know that in a way, Paradox has a connection to the phrase: "Smoke weed everyday".)

The scene where Paradox shows the trio the destroyed future Earth is probably a direct reference to a similar scene in Doctor Who: Pyramids of Mars (1975), in which the Doctor shows his companion what would happen if they failed in the past and they end up on a wasted Earth. Pyramids of Mars also the same episode that the 'I walk in eternity' line comes from.
I also think his use of the chalkboard to visualise the timeline is another reference to a different doctor, Dr Emmet Brown, from a scene in Back to the Future Part II.

The only thing he really has going for him is agelessness. Everything else was just patience, a bit of hard work and good memory. He's basically a lawyer of reality. He knows all the laws and all the ways to make them work for him.
It's really a natural progression. Today we know how to make electricity. Easily and somewhat effortlessly by our perspective. Compared to someone 2000 years ago, it would be a super power.

What you're describing is potentially the Quantum Zeno Effect, which by what seems to be sheer coincidence is also the inspiration for "Quantum Locking," the ability of the infamous Weeping Angels in Doctor Who to only exist frozen in time when perceived. The coincidence was so immense I spent this entire section of the video expecting a Weeping Angel based punchline, or for an image of one to slowly fade in whilst the explanation was happening, but nope! The thing about something only existing when its being observed is a misunderstanding of wave-particle duality. In layman's terms, when a particle's exact position is uncertain (aka it's not being directly observed) it exists as a wave function that is the sum total of all possible quantum states. So take an electron that's in an empty box that can't be looked inside. While its unobservable that electron does not exist as a defined particle but rather as a collection of probabilities that form the wave function, describing all fundamental properties of the electron: its energy, position, velocity, momentum etc.

But he didn't, because the heroes had their own solution and needed to become defenders in their own right.

You know, him calling Ben 'Young Ben', means he's always 'aware' of the main timeline. It means much like how we know what we watch is the main story, their reality itself works that way, and entities like Paradox know it. Ultimate Ben, Ben 10k, they are all parallel worlds Paradox can easily visit, but they aren't the 'Main' reality. It might be somewhat like the cosmology of DC and the MCU where some universes have a bigger impact on the multiverse than others do.

The branches are universe timelines that take drastic turns, where the leaves are stand alone *what ifs* that do not affect the time stream of a timeline to full split it off into another timeline possibly.

    1. Red is the Main colour for Albedo, the character who created the Ultimates in the first place and not to mention that the Ultimate Aliens were brought back in Omniverse with Albedo, so his primary colour would be a good fit for a breakdown of a show centred around his creations.
    2. And in “The Ultimate Sacrifice” Not only is Albedo mentioned but the sentient Ultimates’ eyes glow red in stead of green and not to mention the giant pit of red fire in the same episode.
All and all it seems that Red is the defining colour of the term “Ultimate” in the Ben 10 universe.

I really love how they do time travel and teleportation in this episode. Each one is a jarring camera cut even if they’re just jumping a few minutes ahead in time. Every time it happens you know something’s off but it takes a second for your mind to click and realize they’re in a new location which I think is really fun and creative. It almost feels dream-like with how nonsensical it is and how Paradox just goes along with it. I also love how the main trio is surprised each time it happens and you get to see their expressions of confusion which I think really adds to the entertainment when both you and the main cast have the same reaction.
I’m really sad that they don’t do this in future episodes and opt to just use a blue portal shining effect instead. Like yeah, it probably saves time on trying to come up with creative camera cuts to show how jarring Paradox’s time travel is for other characters and subsequently the audience, but I think that’s a shame since this episode’s storyboards really hone in on how to pull the audience into this strange situation with clever use of film techniques.

Except this is 3D this monster moves and yet always exists on where he has been because he always exists in the past and present simultaneously. Amazing character design.

The thing you're referring to was half right. It's a principle of quantum mechanics known as Quantum Superposition, which states that any two quantum states that are added together will form a new, valid quantum state (and subsequently, any quantum state can also be split into 2 separate valid states). Therefore, if a physical system can be in numerous configurations, the most generalized state will be the combination of all of the possible configurations.
Most famously represented by the Shreodinger's Cat paradox but represented best by the Double Slit experiment, it shows that observing a system of particles in a quantum state will change the result simply by the act of observing it.

"Things only exist/become real when they are observed" is a common quantum physics misconception. Relational interpretation says that observation can "decide" the result of the double-slit experiment (in which an electron passes through both slits on a plate at the same time) but, in physics terms, "observation" differs from the colloquial use. If an object is 'observed', it means that they are interacting with a medium that makes them perceivable, e.g. light. Being observed by a sentient being has nothing to do with the experiment.

After typing this comment out, I realize it may have been a more interesting and novel idea in my head than in actuality, but I spent too much time writing this to not say it
I feel like for every fictional time traveling character, there's a direct correlation between how easy it is for them and how casual they act about it. This can typically be measured by how much they worry about accidentally breaking or altering the timeline.
-On the bottom end of the scale is characters in series where time travel happens in like one episode - for them, potentially changing the timeline is usually a major threat to avoid, and can usually make up the plot of an episode
-On the lower end you get characters who have been sent through time for some specific mission - it's harder to pin these down, though, because usually they won't be worried about changing the timeline when they go back intending to change the timeline. Still, for a lot these stories, going back in time to change things is usually treated seriously, and is often a difficult task
-Towards the middle of the scale you get characters like Doc Brown or the Flash, who have fairly direct access to means of time travel, but are still inside the timeline, and so are at risk themselves if they damage or alter it, so there is still some worry, but they also have the means to correct it if need be
-On the higher end you get to most "time police" styled organizations and characters like The Doctor - where time travel is fairly simple, and often these characters aren't as worried about damaging the timeline themselves because they're usually working to fix it
-This area also has a lot of villain characters who have easy access to time travel, who aren't worried about damaging the timeline because they simply don't care if they do.
-At the top you reach characters like Paradox, for whom time travel is trivial. These characters are often above or outside the timeline, and can interfere where and whenever they want. There's usually at least one scene of them perfectly and effortlessly dodging a series of attacks to show just how powerful they are.
-There's also probably some extra tier for gods/celestial beings that actually control time itself
*This scale does not apply well to characters who time travel only to the future, and as such do not risk changing the past

Personally I'm not a big fan of time travel in series or movies because every writer makes their own rules on it and they usually don't make sense. In avengers endgame they even jokingly say everything they saw in classic movies was nonsense. It's essentially just magic with scientific words thrown in. That being said, I still enjoy paradox as a character and most of the episodes he stars in and I don't necessarily hate time travel so it's always a treat to see him helping Ben and the team

Quick question, when paradox met himself on the moon. How do we know that the paradox is from the same universe/timeline? It's possible that at him entering the event horizon, every paradox just collapsed into itself.

So I forgot that the time vortex was destroyed in this episode, does that mean it keeps getting rebuilt whenever it shows up again later in AF and UA?

"It's factory new from 30 years ago! Paradox, I take back everything I was about to say about you!"
Definitely my favorite line from this episode.

You’re also somewhat missing the idea that paradox and Ben are similar to the doctor and River song. They don’t meet linearly time-wise, paradox is already very familiar with Ben when Ben has never met him before. Plus, it also has the interest of Paradox learning the source of his name, when River’s real name Melody was taken from Amy’s childhood friend Mels, who got her name from Amy at birth

It does make me wonder how Paradox and The Doctor would interact.

Depends on which version of the Doctor. I can imagine he'd get along well with the first and fourth Doctors.

Not sure if an intentional reference but Paradox's origin reminds me of the Master staring into the Untempered Schism. You have a person coming in coming in contact with a hole in time and being driven insane with intense knowledge and becoming hyper intelligent. The difference is Paradox eventually got past it by the time he smartened up.

“ you’re trying to unlock a cactus” that’s probably my new favourite line.
