how ultraviolence changed lana del rey's career forever đŹ
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 6. 06. 2024
- hello friends and welcome back to another day of me being the lanaoligist. in today's video essay on lana del rey (a series I am now doing that does a deep dive and album breakdown into each of her studio albums), we discuss what a moment ultraviolence was for a sophomore effort from an artist with big buzz and even bigger detractors.
ultimately the artistry of ultraviolence allowed LDR to enter a new phase of her career - where she became untouchable, almost, and creatively insulated from the wider industry pressures within pop music. let me know what you think of this record in the comments & keep it cute!!

ultraviolence proved that born to die was not a fluke. lana was the real deal, had something to say and was here to stay. thus, a legend was born.
Mhm the album after a success is so critical. Just like any movie sequel just cannot match up to the original right. Like billies new album or tranquility base after am. Good album but not as ubiquitous
Ultraviolence permanently changed the brain chemistry of us Tumblr girlies, for better and worse
Still changing my brain chemistryâŠ
The effy stonem edits to sad girl đ I miss being 14
@@StrangerBillie yesss! đ
When Ultraviolence came out I was both immediately shocked and obsessed! Brooklyn Baby , Ultraviolence, Sad Girl , Pretty When You Cry , Shades of Cool , and West Coast will never get old.
Her best is probably NFR. But my favourite, along with her most philosophical, is Honeymoon. Ugh. That album is the most gorgeous thing I have ever listened to
so real
omg same here! idk why honeymoon feels more cinematic than btd to me
Sameeee
Woah, Honeymoon is my least favorite album from her and I would love to know what you like about it
Yessss I was searching for a comment like this đ I love Honeymoon!
Only professor Zachary can double major in swiftology and lanaology and graduate top of his class in both.
so true
YES THE ULTRAVIOLENCE VIDEO WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR WOOO
I think that released ultraviolence after born to die was such a smart way of solidifying her stardom. Btd gave her the sad girl aesthetic which captivated attention but she was ridiculed for being shallow and lacking depth, songs like lolita, this is what makes us girls, without you. too saccharine and vapid. ultraviolence leaned really heavily into the sad girl aesthetic but completely departed from the pop-radio friendly more shallow sound of born to die and showed critics her diversity and talent
very true!
ULTRAVIOLENCE is truly one of the best albums of all time â€â€â€
Im so glad you recognize the creative detour lana took with this album. It felt WAY way more personal than Born To Die sort of like lanaâs reading a book to an audience. This video is so good!! â€â€â€
it was a departure for her ... a brave & creatively fulfilling risk!! thanks for watching
Some days I become convinced that ultraviolence never actually happened because itâs just such an excellent album that it just doesnât feel real. Like it feels like a dream.
The fit for Lana del Rey is perfect. I just got into her recently (big fan of Taylor but just got into Lana, thanks to you) and Iâm obsessed with her and this album is one of her best.
One of my favourite albums of all time. I listen to it most nights, there is just something about it which just makes me sleepy. It's so other-worldly and transcendent. I didn't know half of the history behind it, now my appreciation of it has increased tenfold!
agreed, its so immersive!
I screamed when I saw this video was out, because Ultraviolence is SUCH a masterpiece and I truly believe that we can see, to this day, the impact it has had on Lana's career and the rest of her discography. As someone who is absolutely fan/obsessed/fascinated by Lana del rey and who just can't shut up about her because of how emotionally intense her music is to me, I am so happy to see that you use your analytical skills to talk more about her. Please do this kind of video for each of her albums!
Also, your outfit fits this album perfectly :)
Thanks queen i def will
THANK YOU! đđđ This album truly is maybe one of my favourites of all time, so itâs an absolute pleasure to see it broken down and analysed this way.
â„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž
When Ultraviolence came out, it was hard for me to understand where she was going with the concept. I was such a Born to Die stan that it was difficult to get used to the new sound, but over time, I truly think itâs one of her best. I agree with you that NFR is #1, but I easily think that Ultraviolence is second. Lana was truly ahead of her time with the album, and she wasnât getting the flowers she deserved, but thankfully she is now.đ
Iâm really excited to hear your take on Honeymoon, I think itâs her most underrated and slept on album, since it is sleepy in nature. But I absolutely love it.
Ultraviolence was a huge part of my life back in the day, affecting my aesthetic and music taste big time. It really brings me back every time I put it on!
it really is that nostalgic bitch
I love your takes especially when analyzing Lanaâs music and artistry. Would you maybe considering doing a video analyzing the poems on Violets bent backwards over the grass??
yes!! once im done with her albums lol
i need this as a series. omfg i love this
it is a series!!
I 100% agree with what you said about artists not needing to be a teacher or role model for those who listen, it just limits and offends the spotenaity of the creative process and the personal experiences and views of those who make the music. People tend to put everything in black and white, right and wrong, forgetting that there are other visions of things, and end up not giving a chance to actually see what that artist is saying. And the biggest proof of that is exactly what you said about how Lana subverts power by âchoosing to be submissiveâ, and therefore evoking a seduction and âcoolnessâ that makes her even quite powerful.
thank you for this comment!! super thoughtful and I'm glad you enjoyed
ultraviolence is lanaâs statement to the music industry that she doesnât give a f*ck and more than happy to express her artistry as she desires. i still remember the feeling of being blown away by the sudden tempo shift of west coast and that electric guitar bridge in shades of cool like it was yesterday even though that was like 9 years ago đ
EDIT: I love your insightful analysis especially the way you address the contradictory nature of Lana's mind in an objective manner which highlights that you really gets her, looking forward to your Ocean Blvd album review soon!
your videos are always so high quality, and you are so well spoken. iâm not that far in, and iâm gonna have to finish it later, but the video is amazing as usual. i love ultraviolence so much. i really donât know of another album like it. old money is absolutely my favorite on the album and i cry every single time i hear it. i can never decide what my favorite lana album is, but nfr and uv are always the two contenders.
thank you so much for watching logan!
Iâve loved Lana since Born to Die, but Ultraviolence is the album that made her one of my favorite artists ever. I was a grungy tumblr teen who grew up on all types of rock music, and as soon as I heard the opening guitar on cruel world I was GAGGED. NFR is my favorite Lana album, but this album will always have a special place in my heart.
Ultraviolence changed my brain chemistry
yup
ugh i love your lana del rey videos!! your commentary is so interesting and you've made me appreciate her music even more than i thought was even possible
so glad you liked it caroline!!
Thank you for all the Lana content!! Really excited for more Lana-related videos. Love your lanaoligist amplua
thank you for watching!
Loved this video! Ultraviolence was definitely my favourite album of hers until NFR. Excited to see if youâll be doing a video on Honeymoonđ
I'm sooooo sad I can't watch it right now, I'll catch with it later, I've been waiting for this video since you announced it and I'm so excited to finally watch it. I love LDR
ive been watching a few of your reactions and i later found this video recommended to me. this is such an excellent representation of UV. please break down other albums, i love your inputs.
i remember it took me a few weeks to get into ultraviolence, i was still in high school but i was obsessed once i sat and listened to it all. this album has 0 skips for me. I can listen to this one back to front and the story/aesthetic is very concise on this album and it doesnât feel bloated. i also remember the honeymoon being the follow up and I wasnât feeling it at all after how amazing i thought ultraviolence was. im going to revisit honeymoon though because im grown now so hopefully i can appreciate it more.
Revisit honeymoon . †You won't regret it. It's an incredible album. â€
PLEASE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO!! Please do them for all albums
Yes!!! Slayy!!! Great video! Can not wait for more Lana.
Also I would love a Honeymoon video. Honeymoon imo is one of her best albums. Soooo underrated. Her best vocals. The classy cinematic aesthetics. The production. Everything is just heavenly.
(I was a honeymoon hater, I listened to it after NFR release ) and I was speechless. So many hates this album because it is slow but Once it hits you⊠It def feels like a kiss)
i would love to know if YOU like Honeymoon or not.
Please do a honeymoon analysis, it is an underrated masterpiece
so well done literally can not wait for the NFR video
I didnât like ultraviolence the first time I heard it. I thought her sound had lost its âumphâ from born to die but after a couple of listens it really grew on me and now itâs one of my faves from her
Alright hmm⊠so for like 4 years I obsessed over this album and era DANGEROUSLY. I was living as Lana in that album specially in my head even tho I had never been in a relationship or done drugs or done anything wild lol. I had started writing a lot of poetry about the type of men UV inspired. Itâs kinda funny but I think that eventually led me to automatically get attracted to pretty melancholy dark and mysterious boys. I fell in love with the most pathetic one of them and obsessed over him for a year even tho he didnât appreciate it in the right way at all and that damaged me so much. Iâm not gonna blame Lana for it obviously. Itâs just that, that album had such a huge impact on me, I actually had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way, which I assume Lana probably had to learn too.
Also, Cruel World is my all time favorite LDR track.
fyi cruel world was Lanaâs personal fav of the album too!
omg finally! I've been waiting for this video
Finally you're done with the essay đđđ
love the looks you're serving in this vid! great analysis!
thanks for watching molly!!
so good as always â€ïžâđ„â€ïžâđ„
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video.honestly
glad to see that you found that fontđ
You are such a big inspiration to me. Iâm currently studying to become a translator and I always anxiously put your videos to activate my Spanish-speaking-scatter brain in English. The way you speak is so eloquently beautiful it ASMRs my frontal brain lobe. Additionally, Lana is my favorite artist, so please never stop analyzing her body of work.
omg this is such a lovely compliment - thank you!
Thank you for the education!! Old money is my fave off this revord
Her best body of work in my opinion
ALSO the Didion reference!!! You were so right for that
IâVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS VIDEO would kill for a vid on her unreleased discography btw
My favorite review of this album when it came out was this one that called it âthe startling and disturbing sophomore album no one expectedâ like that was a BAD THING??? Lol I knew from that moment on I was hooked for life on this woman
Canât wait for the honeymoon era analysis (hopefully there will be). Itâs my my 2nd fav album from Lana and imo the most cohesive work of hers
i was trying to pick my favorite songs from ultraviolence but i literally canât. each song is special in its own way. iâm always drawn to florida kilos and is this happiness though. florida kilos is so fun and i love dancing and singing to it. is this happiness just really resonates with me because of the lyrics and it sounds so heartbreaking and beautiful. iâm not sure what her intention was with it but thatâs how i perceive it.
Loved the video, as always. My fav song is probably ultraviolence or old money. Brooklyn baby is a masterpiece though, objectively one of the bests from her entire career.
Over the last few days I've found myself binging all your videos and I'm not even a swiftie (but I'm becoming convinced), but you're just so bingeable and interesting LOL
Living for Lana Del Rey content â€
her unreleased songs are some of my favorites, but I donât really know much of the background behind them⊠would love to see a vid discussing them!!! đ
Thank you for your service! đđœ
Your Lana content is amazing
thank you marie!!
Iâm a somewhat new Lana fan, I started listening at around November 2022, and really really got into her in January this year, I was (and still) am listening to music almost always due to some personal struggles and reasons, itâs escapism to me. I still wouldnât call myself a full Lana stan, I still havenât gotten into Honeymoon or Blue Banisters. Still getting into Chemtrails and Ultraviolence. Norman Rockwell is my favorite album. But now that Iâm really experiencing the Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard album, and the 2 singles have impressed me so much (especially A&W- one of my fav Lana songs all time now). welcome me to the family
omg welcome aboard
Courtney Love video would be killer â€
Also the Joan Didion comparison is spot on, she dominates my book shelves and Lana dominates my vinyl shelves.
literally my favorite author
ive been saying it since it came out⊠nfr is lanas best body of work, it literally gives me goose bumps evertime i listen to it!! you should totally make a video on it. your analysis is so thoughtful, and i REALLY appreciate how you put yourself in the shoes of the artist instead of only observing as a listener. i feel like so many other critics look at the art directly without any understanding of the artist and the context
Been to the psych word so I'm late with your videos but DAMN just the intro alone..... King of kings love you
The outfit lmao đâ€ïžâ€ïž king of being dedicated.
ill commit to the bit
This is awesome....huge Lana fan myself since Born to Die. Especially love her unreleased world and the original album demos of Born to Die and Ultraviolence! I have tons of remixes and megamixes of her too.
BRAVO!!!!!! Thank you for this â€I became a Lana fan with Westcoast. I didnât âgetâ Born to Die at first and then I heard Westcoast and the rest is history. I just adore this womanâs work and you have such a beautiful sensibility and warmth. The way you communicate is so lovely. I learned so much from your research I wish there was more hehe. Iâm a fan of yours now đ
thank you so much for watching!! more to come
i became a fan of lana in maybe late may, early june of 2022 and i loveee learning about the roll outs and the eras she had before. im caught up on all her releases albums but im scared to dip my toes into her unreleased work đ
Zach really said SERVE with that jacket slay the day awayđ
This is a brilliant analysis. THANK YOU. I feel as if you explained both what I love about the album and what's kind of disappointing. (The messy second half.) I like the thorough way you approach the work itself and the (at times) really dumb response to it. Please keep up the good work!
Ultraviolence came out right when I hit puberty. It was my (if I might say so) national anthem. I played her music from the moment I awoke till I slept. A true album that had shown so many her absolute genius. I was consistently writing whilst living in a dormitory. The stories from those days are stained in my memory. Just like her music always will be in so many minds alike. â€
THIS EDITING! i can tell you've worked hard on this video and it was worth it, the excellence is there đ€
thank you for noticing x
You are so articulate! Love your contentâ€â€â€
It would be so cool if you could make this series also for all the Taylor Swift albums. love ur videos :)
i didn't see that you uploaded?? i had been so excited for this video!!
I love your videos so fucking much. As a Lana fan since 2011, your videos just make me fall in love with her even more.
thanks for watching robbie!!
I love this video so much I love the way you describe her because she is often misunderstood and I love her humor and creativity and the stories so much. She truly deserved to have that visionary award and I think we will see more and more amazing artists calling lana one of their bigger inspirations. I also love how you stood up for uv and the lyrics bc I have listened since 2011 & this album came out when I was 14 I will never forget putting on the album on CZcams on my wii and playing it all the time. I am a dv survivor so even then I could understand her story and the confusion and her emotions in a way. I will forever cherish this album & the way u spoke of cruel world made me smile. Loves it and Iâm so excited this this new album I love seeing her eras and her ideas each time and w A&W I truly was blown away. She will be remembered as one of the best female artists of this century forever frfr đ«¶âš
I enjoyed this video. Ultraviolence has a special place in my heart as well as Live Through This. Iâm glad you brought Courtney up as well. I also love how you mention the satire, I donât think a lot of people get this. Oh and the topic of feminism. All great points!!
I really enjoy you content †thanks for making a video for Lana
thanks for watching :))
zach's fits lately>>>>
thanks !!
I could listen to you do lana breakdowns all day. The only account that is acceptable to do so. And yes plzzz do a video on her unreleased songs
thanks queen
period love this video you tell them
Once again you killed it with your analysis! I feel so fucking validated as a fan since 2012. Incredible work!!!!
First time watching you after falling back into a Lana hole again, after years dormant.
I thoroughly enjoyed your dissection of all I've seen.
Clever, informative, charming and passionate.
I also like your little Smiths nod,
Am I right?
New sub and can't wait to go through the next album with you.
Be well
X
Zach, I adore you, but I would stay subscribed if your content was only videos of Gertrude taking naps. She's a great mascot
noted...she's def a character
I m living for the connections you are making to the Queen Joan Didion and Hole (literally in my pantheon)
Top tier content as usual... it's very stimulating to listen to you. I love this album. CAN'T wait to hear your takes on Norman F* Rockwell
cant wait to give them !!
iâm loving this lana content
can you please please please continue this discography review, like please keep doing on like we want the follow ups like honeymoon, lust for life, NFR⊠its really a good watch tbh
He got a hand mic, it's OVER for the other essayists đ
OVER!!
Omg yes another Lana video đ
6:03 future nfr video essay easter egg? đ
u know it
great review
Great video! You know exactly what you are talking about!
my fave comment
cruel world was the first lana song i heard outside of summertime sadness and video games on the radio like the first time i sought her out i search lana del rey songs on youtube and up came cruel world and that was it i was HOOKED
such a rogue second encounter, love that for you
i was wondering if you would do all of her albums?? or a ranking of them! i love the lana series!
I was so obsessed with the album but itâs one of the few albums I revisit quite often. At least 1-5 times a year. I donât even really listen to her as much anymore as a whole but this album has a special place in my heart.
Ultraviolence, Brooklyn baby, shades of cool, west coast, money power glory, fucked my way to the top, and Florida kilos are all songs I still regularly listen to.
Also I think itâs such a timeless album. Whereas bts while really good really sits in a certain time period.
iâm so excited for 48 minutes and 12 seconds
Omg so true
this series is slayyyy!
This video is amazing!
Ultraviolence is so amazing glad to see some appreciation for our co-kween
Ultraviolence was the first- and I mean THE FIRST- album where I asked myself, "Music can sound like this???" It's still my favorite album of all time. I was 14.
I have a VIVID memory of taking my parents into the living room to show them this new single called West Coast that I really liked... 9 years later it's in my top 3 LDR songs of all time. I was on vacation with my fam when the album dropped, told my dad about it, he still loves all of the songs... just *this morning* he texted me "I want money, power, glory." :) Like father like daughter.
I don't think there will ever be an album that makes me feel like I'm on a hazy beach where the music seems so far away yet so close at the same time, which you mention in your video. An unreliable narrator with complex emotions who takes you on a journey and you can't quite get to the end- maybe you never will. That's what life is all about to me.
I didn't go to church this Sunday but I came here instead and I'm glad! you are honestly the only person I want to hear talking about UV courtney love and beat poets periodddd
omg LOL
I love these videos are you gonna do one for each album?
I love hearing you gush about brooklyn baby because that's my absolutely favorite song by her and deserves all the praise in the world
The content I need
my fav lana album!
