Mauna Kea is the best site in the world for mid-IR astronomy. The mauna is very special. You can't build a telescope like the TMT on just _any_ mountain.

Unfortunately, the TMT has delayed its construction on the 13,800ft Mauna Kea alpine desert because some _Hawaiian Independence_ protesters have taken a benign, altruistic telescope hostage for political reasons. The TMT plan is thoughtful and reasonable, whereas, the Kapu Aloha protesters are not. They haven't proposed any solutions or ideas as to how the TMT can better address the cultural, environmental and ecological concerns. That shows their true intentions. No telescope is needed to see that this protest is a political farce. _"Get Off Our Islands!!!"_ is not the Aloha Spirit.
