YESSS! I know there's a lot of people out there who are disappointed that Elsie didn't end up winning this, but honestly Subwoolfer winning has made me more excited for Eurovision than any of the other songs we've got so far. I love a good ballad, but songs like this that are supposed to be lighthearted, fun, dance bops/bangers are just as valid in my book and just as necessary in the lineup of like 40 songs. AND, like you said, it's a good quality song too. We get to have FUN at Eurovision! I'm so keen.
I think juries will know it has the televote and give them lower points so they don't win overall. But because it's a good quality song, they'll still chuck them some points to acknowledge that.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 2 lety +4

Yea the other thing is that it’s SO much harder to get these types of songs right and they don’t happen often. Elsie is awesome, but we have at least 3-4 decent ballads every year. Whereas epic humour bops happen once every 1-2 years.

Some people see the masks and assume it just to be a no talent novelty act. But the two main suspects of being underneath the masks both are accomplished singers. Gaute Ormåsen, a Norwegian singer who rose to fame coming second in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol - only beaten by Kurt Nielsen, who later the same year won World Idol ahead of Kelly Clarkson (the UK Pop Idol winner, Will Young, came fifth) - is suspected of being the taller of the two wolves in Subwoolfer. Equally strong suspicions the shorter one is UK born, but Norwegian based, Ben Adams of A1 boyband fame. Other speculations/guessings launched in Norwegian media is the Ylvis brothers of What does the fox say fame. All four of them have denied being involved, but that has not lowered fan convictions - especially in regard to the Gaute Ormåsen and Ben Adams combo. Other names suggested includes Norwegian singers from Vidar Villa to Alexander Wallman and Eirik Søfteland. Plenty of samples with all of them on YT for anyone who wants to compare voices and take part in the "investigation" It is a lot saner and less harmful passtime than Qanon, that's for sure.

I do love MGP the last few years, it just works and we get quality. Subwoolfer wasn't my absolute favourite on studio versions, but the fact they can pull it off so well live just makes it even more fun.

I've been viewing "Give that wolf a banana" as a song that exists in the same kind of realm as "Toy" - which is why I also think the juries might not fully tank it (though I suppose Netta had more of a message than Subwoolfer does, so it's not fully a 1:1 comparison)

yea like it will be interesting to see if juries are willing to adapt to modern trends or not. Like this song is very clearly going to go big on tik tok and to think that Tik Tok isnt a huge part of the music scene now is out of touch. It really depends on what objective the juries are told in how to pick their favourite by the show organisers

I was also very relieved that Subwoolfer won ... and I would agree that Elsie Bay probably should have come in second. Having followed MGP here in Norway over the past years, I have noticed that Norwegians tend to be somewhat 'tribal' or 'regional' in their voting and that this can decisively affect the outcome in the final. Sometimes the best song doesn't win. Northkid's song was pretty good ....but second? My explanation is that Northkid's lead singer, Bilal Saab, has an amazing voice and he very deservedly won Norway's Stjernekamp, a singer perfomer competition, a couple years ago (I actually voted for him through to that final) so he has won a strong following here in Norway. In addition he is especially loved in northern Norway where he comes from. You may have noticed that when the northern Norway vote came in, a huge majority went to Northkid which really swung the vote at that point. The same tendency could be seen last year when TIX ('Fallen Angel'), who had previously established a strong following here in Norway, won. (I actually preferred Keiino's 'Monument'.) I would also add that Farida's 'Dangerous' really grew on me and her performance was rather good in the final. Luckily, 'Give That Wolf A Banana' was just too good to be countered by the 'tribal' vote this year. 🙂

thats not just a norweigian thing - it happens everywhere. It was in Spain this year and France last year with the Tahitians. It's a real bane on national finals cos its not picking a song because its good, but just because the person singing it is from your area. its so irrational, and thats why juries are VITAL in eurovision, because they are meant to look past this nonsense.
Northkid's song was good, but i think if there was a jury there Elsie would 99% have been in the gold final instead of them

It seemed to be "Keith" talking during the show and that would be Ben, in case it is him. The person speaking was speaking Norwegian fluently, even with an eastern Norwegian dialect from somewhere south of Oslo. I think someone coyuld have done the talking for Ben to mislead people, so they'd think it isn't him. I would assume he would speak Norwegian with an accent.

You wonder about North Kid? There's two factors I think. One, the main vocalist won a recent song competition. Two, the people living in the north of Norway got some kind of an inferiority complex, and will vote based on where the person is from. The votes from each region was read in the order of how many voted, and the north should be way before the other ones based on population size, but there was a lot more votes than you'd expect because North Kid was from the north. No joke. It's not the first time, they do it all the time, and at least to me it becomes a bit cringey at times.

yes i really dont like that type of partisan voting. people should vote on a song because they like it, not because they come from the same area as the person, thats just irrational. This is one of the small dangers with MGP and not having a jury to counteract this type of voting.

  • @hegesophieborgersen5868

I have one idea, Gaute Ormåsen is known to be a bad dancer, and these two guys dances so well. Maybe Gaute is the DJ Astronaut? Because it is Gautes voice we hear, but it is impossible to see who of these three that actually sing. So it could be DJ Astronaut that actually sing and Keith that do the movements? They are totally screwing with us.... 😂😂

  • @ingaelisetorpnielsen5053

The immediate basis of the lyrics is the fairytale «Little red riding hood», and a fun twist on that. Other meanings may be hidden underneath as well, but I think a vaccine debate is a bit far fetched ;)

lets be honest the reason northkid made the top 2 final duel is because northern norwegians love voting for themselves, they do it every year. and they only had one northern act to choose from, whereas the classy female ballads were 5 out of the 10 entries, splitting the vote. its a shame too because this kind of boyband song is NOT something the north would ever vote for if it wasnt their own partisanship.

They have to revamp the staging. It's a bit boring and lacking energy, and only using the center of the stage

I do like wacky and comedic entries but I´m not a fan of this to be honest.
The stage show with their masks, dancing and those words on the screen is interesting, but the audio of the song alone absolutely does nothing for me.
The thing is that I really need to somewhat like and enjoy something in its audio form alone before the stage show can fully get me on board.
Which is why I don´t even know how to rank this.

Honestly just don't get it or see the appeal to it at all. It just seems childish and almost insulting to the other artists who are taking it seriously. We can't see their faces, so how do we know if they're signing live? Really hope this comes last in its semi and juries mark it down

Music should evoke emotions in people. This song brings pure joy in me. There is a difference between a joke and humor .. this is a fun spin on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. It is certainly not childish, the production behind this song is absolutely fantastic! I have this song on repeat in the car, I dance and sing to my heart's content and I am a well grown lady of 46 years !!! after two miserable years of shutdown and pandemic, this is exactly what we need !!!
