  • @XealotCoils
    @XealotCoils Před 8 měsíci +100

    I mean even in 9th they were fairly meh. Better as a diversion or a distraction than anything else really. If they had like a MW charge or maybe Lance, or hell give them back their extra 2 attacks on the charge and you'll actually find a place for them. But when they're so big and still rocking around a barely tougher marine body, without any special weapons to speak of, you're gonna find them fairly useless.
    The fact that you gotta invest two units that double their points to make them anywhere near alright is a tragedy.

      can't give them lance. would make chaplain on bike redundant. Sans chaplain honour the chapter strat for lance and a bonus +1 ap during assault doctrine. Is captain on bike in Legends now? He can use the strat for free and gives the guns assault.

    They got absolutely murdered from 9th to 10th.
    Less movement, half the shots and far less attacks while also going UP in points costs, retaining only the auto advance as their ability, losing the extra attacks on charge.
    They were already considered a middling unit in 9th.
    So what’re they good for? Decent durability per points and mobility. Very versatile/adaptable unit that at the least is always useful for screening and quickly going somewhere else.

    the main problem with bikes is that jump intercessors exist now and basically do the same thing better for less points. outriders need a melta weapon option or something similar to really make them worth taking. they tried to do that by letting you attach an ATV but then the ATV also loses its special ability which makes it suck.

    Like a number of the primaris units with bolters and/or chainswords, these guys seem to lack the weapon options that they'd really need to shine. I agree, they should just refresh the old Biker unit with Primaris models, keep the old unit card with weapon options.
      I think they should actually go a step farther and after returning OG Bikers to us on the new model chassis, turn Outriders into something like "Reavers on Bikes". Give them a Battle Shock on Charge with a penalty if the unit has lost models this turn (from ranged softening them up) and then activate Anti-Infantry 3+ if the target unit is battleshocked, very much the traditional melee cavalry hammer against infantry formations. Throw a Bike Chaplain in there for Dev Wounds on the Bolters to make the Battleshock more likely, use the Fallback and Charge stratagem to be able to do it again on your turn if they didn't break.

    I run 2 or 3 squads of outriders with succes in a 2k list last months before the codex released. How I use them is with the Grenades stratagem. Instead of bolters throw grenades. Advance+shoot is basically a surprise grenade throw with range of 26 inch. Give a few MW at the right weak point and the enemy elite unit is dead or weakened or distracted. If they dont do enough damage they are tough enough to survive and be annoying or fall back and charge next battle. And also great objective snatchers early in the game. And ride to corners for secondaries. I had one great moment. I had a single outrider left, it did this trick to a skitarii unit on top of a tower. Whole squad killed in 1 grenade throw.

    So... they're essentially the sci-fi version of scout cavalry. Use them to attack an enemy's weak flank and sweep their backfield objective holders who are often light infantry. Base size + high movement + coherency
    These can string out to put OC on multiple objectives and screen huge areas of the board from deep strikes/strategic reserves, will always find cover on even a light terrain table. Stopping your opponent from scoring behind enemy lines/deploy teleport Homer, etc has value - or forcing them to shooting the bikes which with T5 and 4wds are an inefficient target for many guns

    Biggest problem I’ve found isn’t even the lack of power (although trust me, it’s an issue). It’s the fact that you have to somehow find a way to get those relatively big bases to the enemy. A 6-man squad with a Chaplain takes up more space than certain tanks, but unlike those tanks you have to get close in order to do anything. The end result is just super awkward in terms of movement.

They can still do actions, and it's way easier for them to get within 12" and boost their firepower to a better bracket. A multi-melta ATV in particular will quite like that. Outriders only have bolterd and chainswords
    Whilst you have to model it for regular bikes, you can take alot more stuff on them such as thunder hammers and power fists for the Sergeant. Meanwhile the two accompanying marines can take chainswords or a slew of special weapons. One of those being a melta gun so the attack bike you can attach to the unit isn't a necessity (personally i always let attack bikes be in their own squad).
    The lack of additional war gear and their monopose models for me is why I personally never take them and despise the OG bikes and to a lesser extent the scout bikes being locked to legends and removed

    If the codex didn't have inceptors, then they'd be useful for getting to areas of the board that are screened out for secondaries. But...inceptors exist.

    Ironically, the only real use for them in terms of actual damage dealing is if you take them in a firestorm assault force. Full unit with MM ATV and a Chaplain. 16 bolt rifle shots and a multi-melta, all with devestating wounds isn't too shabby. I'd use them to steal away one of my opponent's back-field objectives to try and deny them those crucial first turn VPs. They're not horrible in melee, but I wouldn't focus on it...Maybe give the chappy the War-tempered artifice enhancement for +3 strength to his crozius, but that's take or leave IMO because your opponent is going to do everything they can to remove that unit from their DZ. In summary, They're a denial unit, not a direct combat unit...Don't try to play them as something they're not cause it won't go your way. That goes for any unit in the game really, but more so in this case.

    Hold up I'm cooking. A techmarine on bike with the honour vehement, omnissian power axe, 2 servo arms, and a plasma cutter has 12 attacks in melee outside assault doctrine. It can lead a squad of outriders for some protection, have lone operative if the squad wipes, support heavy vehicles like vindicators with the healing and +1 to hit, and being such a prime target, gives you a reason to take invader ATVs outside the squad. If the opponent shoots the tank, the techmarine heals it. Shoot the outriders, all the invaders return fire. Shoot the invaders...the other ones return fire and oh no...not the invader. Also if the tank dies the axe goes to 7 attacks base and in assault doctrine would be at 9 attacks, strength 8, ap -2, damage 2 along with 4 strength 10 plasma cutter attacks, and 4 strength 10 servo arm attacks. Why does he have to be stuck in legends?

  • @Retrosicotte

    They really just need options to carry some plasma guns or meltaguns, so people can use their old Biker models with them, since the old squad has been turfed from the rules.

    In DA, I have been testing the Stormlance, and my results have been pretty much against running a unit of Outriders. A unit of six Plasma Inceptors to use the Sustained Hits 1 strat on a 3” Deep Strike against back line units to steal objectives, or get an otherwise difficult secondary is far superior. The flexibility of inceptors against outriders is the biggest factor. Being able to drop in against Canoptek Reanimators or Desolation Squads or any of the prominent units that hide on the home objective, and being able to wipe the entire unit from Deep Strike, and usually being able to drop directly onto their home objective is pretty much better than anything that the outriders have to offer.

    GW has just got Outriders fundamentally wrong… Firstborn work as they are like ‘dragoons’ with special weapons options, the option between Chainsword and extra Bolt pistol, and Sergeant weapon option flexibility, they can be changed to fill a battlefield role… Outriders with just Chainswords are just a ‘one trick pony’, a mobility unit doomed to be tar-pitted in combat - which due to GW making vanilla with NO options or ‘get out’ weapons, Outriders are just BAD in melee. Their sadly now one role… 😢 Like a number of other Primaris units, poor design and doomed to fail…! Give them special weapons and sergeant options, then we’ll talk GW!

    • @Vecilias
      @Vecilias Před 8 měsíci +3

      100% this. My biggest gripe about firstborn bikes getting legended was that they ultimately filled a very different and more fleshed out role compared to primaris outriders.
      I could give a 3 man firstborn bike squad 2 melta guns led by a powerfist and they can atleast get in melta range, could also add an attack bike with a multi melta for that extra punch.

  • @chriscluver1940

    What I don't understand is why the Outrider data card has the charactaristics & weapons for the ATV, but the ATV doesn't have reverse. It tricks you into thinking that the Outriders can have more weapon options than they do.

    I find that they are fun for a kamikaze charge around corners. They end up tanking a lot of light infantry pretty well due to the extra wounds.
    Id look at these guys as a way to ruin units like Biovores and such's shooting phase. Just tying up thinfs that suck in melee for a slap fight that takes 2 rounds to get them off of you

  • @GradeAMolvanian
    @GradeAMolvanian Před 8 měsíci

    Honestly? GW should drop the 'twin linked' thing. Bring back Shred for rerolling wounds, but make most 'twin linked' weapons just double the rate of fire. Do that, maybe add a charge bonus (+2 attacks, +1 to wound, or +2 str), MAYBE give the guns assault and that's all you need. You have a fast unit that can drive small units off of objectives. That's all they need to be.
    I'd make the Invader ATV use 'heavy' versions of the weapons. Heavy bolt rifles from the heavy intercessors, the Heavy Onslaught Gatling Cannon, and I would have said 'Twin heavy melta rifles' rather than a Multimelter back when the heavy rifles had different stats... then again I'd say the standard Multimelta should be 1 shot with Shred instead of two shots, so a two shot non-rerolling version would be a small upgrade. Maybe a small point hike if required (I haven't run the numbers yet). Really I'd try to keep the unit focused on the 'harass light enemy units with both shooting and melee, while moving fast' niche.

    Pricier than intercessors with worse version of both their primary weapons. They have slightly better toughness and higher movement stats. All they are good for is just ablative wounds, minor scoring and a distraction. They die easily and once you lose a bike, their combat effectiveness drops dramatically.

    • @almostpainted
      @almostpainted Před 8 měsíci

      hopefully... Captain on bike would fix so many issues! starting with free stratagem, making them actually interesting in storm lance: 1CP for -1 to wound and hit, improves durability in opponents turn, 2CP (free with captain) allows for 9" advance, and then 1CP for lance and rerolls of charges. So they actually end up using 1CP per turn for being both durable and actually threatening somewhat. Assuming captain would have decent melee this squad could deal with enemy infantry, and with OC2 even steal some objective

    I wish they were good cos they're cool but oof. I played my Templars against my friend's Dark Angels running mostly Raven Wing last week and tabled him in 2.5 turns rounds. The only unit that did reasonably well was the Ravenwing Black Knights being anti-vehicle on the charge and popping my impulsor. I feel like they need some anti-xxxx keywords to justify their existance and mobility.

  • @Chubbutjubs

    Outriders are the epitome of inflexible & restrictive Primaris units:
    - No Sergeant melee upgrades
    - No special weapons
    - Monopose kit (and absurdly priced - always buy from 2nd hand market)
    - Previously locked to squad size of 3 in 9th... Now more flexible, but...
    - ...Have completely replaced Bikers in 10th, which had the advantages on the first 3 bullet points above
    Why would a chapter in the lore systematically replace their bikers with these? It boggles the mind.
    Good thing they're nice sculpts and fun to paint!

    Too bad the ATV is so bad looking. Also would really like to use the Outriders with Space Wolves. They look cool alongaide the Fenrisian Wolves.
