Today I’m going to cover the best remedy to help get rid of sugar cravings and cravings for alcohol: L-glutamine.
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. Glutamine turns into glutamate, which is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain.
L-glutamine increases gluconeogenesis, which is the production of new sugar. This means that this amino acid can quickly turn to sugar and feed your brain cells, but it won’t spike your insulin.
Both sugar and alcohol can provide a sense of relief to some people. L-glutamine may help provide fuel to the brain and reduce stress, anxiety, and pressure-this may help reduce the need for alcohol and sugar. L-glutamine has many other potential health benefits, as well.
Alcohol consumption can block glutamine and all of the beneficial effects that come with it.
Other things can also create a glutamine deficiency, such as:
    • Chronic stress
    • Overtraining
    • Trauma
    • Chronic infection
    • A lack of glutamine in the diet
    Foods rich in glutamine:
    • Beef
    • Chicken
    • Fish
    • Eggs
    • Dairy
    • Cabbage
    • Dark leafy green vegetables
You can also take L-glutamine as a supplement.
Other things that may help get rid of cravings for alcohol and sugar:
    • Regular exercise without overtraining
    • Getting enough sleep
    • Reducing stress
    • Consuming less alcohol
    • Get on the keto diet and do intermittent fasting

I'm a 48 YO veteran, cirrhosis survivor of 3 Years. I know everyone's body reacts differently so I'm gonna tell you my story in hindsight. I was the kind of person who felt normal while inebriated. I was an alcoholic in the military. I was an alcoholic after the military. I was 40 YO, when as usual I was & drunk & I noticed the top of my foot jiggling as I walked through the house. My feet were puffy. It went away, just a thing. Two years later, I had an intervention at the VA Hospital where they told me my liver enzymes were elevated, ok. Five years later I suddenly collapsed, my legs gave out & I couldn't stand for several minutes (Sarcopenia). It happened again so I started trying to exercise, wishful thinking. I couldn't stand on my tip toes. My calves would cramp along with my toes. My hams & finger would also cramp. My neighbors were complaining about my absent mindedness (Hepatic Encephalopathy) & If I scratched myself, it bled profusely (thrombocytopenia). my belly had become extremely swollen & painful (Ascites). This made me call an ambulance. I was crying because it hurt so bad, plus I was mentally insane. I got a Paracentesis at the hospital where they removed 9 liters of ascites from my abdomen. My heart was swollen (Alcoholic cardiomyopathy) I had a kidney infection & I was told that I would lose my liver but fortunately that didn't happen. After my two months stay in the hospital, I had to regularly return for more Paracentesis procedures to remove the ascites, three times a month. I was given over twenty five Medications to take home in the hopes that I could safely administer them myself, I couldn't. (Lactulose), a medication administered (50ml) 3x daily is difficult to adhere to when you are out of your mind (Hepatic Encephalopathy) so I was evicted & I had to pay $900.⁰⁰ a month to stay in a very cheap, poorly managed assisted living facility witch was actually a trap house for the mentally unstable. At least they gave me my medicine. I left that awful place 6 months ago & now I am in a wonderful apartment 400 yards from a Super Walmart. I have my Lactulose, Furosemide, Rifaximin, Pantoprazole, Propranolol & Spironolactone to keep me healthy. If it wasn't for Alcohol, I wouldn't have joined the Military. After the military, I became a government contractor that has a magnificent passport. If it wasn't for Alcohol I would have two passports, one expired & one active. Alcohol almost killed me & I'll never touch it again. I will die before my time due to liver failure but I never think about alcohol. It is a Pyrrhic Victory in its truest meaning. Not everyone is as fortunate as I am. "The only thing in this World that you can control, is yourself." PS Thank you Veterans Healthcare Administration.

Dr Berg also did another one talking about kudzu for alcohol. I looked it up in other sources and found good comments about it. I passed the info to a friend and they had success with it.
There's also an interesting study in mice and gaba receptors. Those with alcohol addiction seem to have this faulty pathway with gaba, but once the pathway is restored then the cravings can go away. They even changed the mice that were not interested in alcohol to get addicted by manipulating the pathway the other way.
I'm lucky that I don't struggle with alcohol, but it's easy to why it's not so straightforward for some people to quit when you see the science.

Quitting alcohol was arguably one of the best things i’ve ever done. It wasn’t like it was ruining my life, bc I was very functional and would get energy, and i’d couple it with smoking (weed) while always doing something (i.e.: creating things like art, cooking, sewing, etc.)
I was a whiskey, scotch, red wine drinker and had my first drink of (Jack Daniels) in 6th grade.
I’m sure being an athlete at a high level most likely allowed me to get away with it for so long, but everyone isn’t so fortunate. Being sedentary or inactive + poor eating habits-coupled with poor sleep is a recipe for disaster!
It did use to give me crazy anxiety, though. Worrying about things that I didn’t even feel like were necessarily big problems. Sometimes the alcohol would make it one.
Quitting turns the powerless into the powerful!

I accidentally bought L-Glutamine and didn't realize that I had grabbed the wrong item until I got home. Took it cuz figured it couldn't hurt. I noticed during that time, whenever I went to the grocery store ice cream and chocolate did nothing to me. I had no desires for them. Now I know why. Thanks for the info. I'll take it again in Oct because the Halloween candy displays always draw me in and I go overboard on that garbage and then beat myself up over it. This will help me get through that.

I have the genes that make alcohol give me a super hit of dopamine; not only that, but almost never any hangovers. Those 2 things led me to drink nightly for basically 18 years. The problem was all the wasted time on those nights when I wasn't drinking socially. Took me to just accept that I should never drink again and that I was not a drinker any longer and it became really easy. Don't miss it at all either. When I reflect, all of the fun was from the social activities anyway, not the booze.

Alcoholics Anonymous is NOT about "not drinking", it's about "living differently". Understanding how to get to the moon, without actually doing the work, won't get you off the launch pad!
After 29 and a half years of continuous sobriety, I am quite certain of one thing...the path taken to get and stay sober, and AA is only one of them, requires the willingness to take ACTION!
Ask yourself this question..."How many hours, days, weeks, months, and years did I "spend" drinking"??? How many "hours" did I spend drinking at home, going to bars, parties, social events, vacations, births, deaths, graduations, and shopping for alcohol???
It's laughable to be worried about spending one hour in an AA meeting compared to the effort you put into booze. The hours I have spent in changing "ME" have been the greatest INVESTMENT I could ever make...and I have a great life to show for it! I sincerely wish you well! Mark

I wish you all the best of luck when choosing to avoid alcohol.
Since drinking is part of being sociable, you may also have to rethink your relationships, as did I.
However, know that you can still have fun without indulging in a stiff drink, but don't advertise or brag about it. Just keep your cool, enjoy your alcohol-free drink, and socialize as usual, that way no one will be the wiser.
There is a downside to announcing your sobriety. There will always be that one person who sees you as a challenge to get you to take 'just one drink, for old times' sakes.' 'Nobody likes to drink alone,' they'll say! Believe me, it happened to me.
But, if push comes to shove, say you're following your doctor's advice. Indeed, you won't be lying. I don't know of any doctor that would recommend anybody to drink alcohol, even if they themselves do.
Good luck, my friends! And enjoy your alcohol-free life!

When I started keto years ago I was able to quit drinking too! But I started again and now I probably need straight up carnivore and AA.

Chris Scott from fit recovery an ex drinker is the only recovery coach that I have listened that educates about supplementation in recovery. I learned about this valuable and rarely discussed protocol of amino acid supplements from him on his podcasts, thankyou Chris, thankyou Dr Berg

I used the Sinclair method to get rid of alcohol addiction. And then I looked at the sugar and carbohydrate consumption and went more like keto and also carnivore. That decreased considerably the carbohydrate consumption. I always thought alchohol addiction was related to sugar addiction.
