Would you say that Bosquet or Bernard were only relevant because of their suit? Even without the suit Cielo medaled in London and got two world golds in 2013. He’s made it to the finals in the 50m free as recently as the 2017 and 2018 world championships. Cielo’s international career is one of the longest of any swimmer, and for you to say that he’s only good because of his suit is just plain stupid.

Also after the suits were banned he did make the fastest time ever recorded without suits on the 50 free (when he won the 50 free for the third time in a world championship on 2013). This time however was later beaten by Florent Manadou (1 year later I believe).

In 2008-2009, swimmers wore 50%-100% Polyurethane suits until it was banned in 2010. Cielo was wearing a 100% Polyurethane suit so it's definitely an advantage over people that are swimming before and after it was banned.

This guy in the late 1990's on the Sajauro Highschool swim team got a 19 second 50m freestyle at a match. I was on the Coronado Highschool swim team. My best time was 27 seconds. That's times with one turn off the wall in 25m pool.
Cesar was a great sprinter. Cesar set the NCAA record in the 50 yard free at 18.47 Calaeb Dressel went 17.63 He would’ve beaten Cesar by a full body length. In a 50. Caeleb Dressel beats one of the worlds best sprinters...by a full body length.
