Interrogating Lewis Hamilton's questionable Max Verstappen F1 claim

  • Lewis Hamilton versus Max Verstappen is the gift that just keeps on giving. Their… let’s call it ‘intense’... rivalry is not quite so white hot on track these days, but that doesn’t seem to stop them and their respective teams throwing shade at one another.
    Lewis is essentially saying that Max’s achievements now mean a bit less because he didn’t face the same degree of internal competition that Lewis did from team-mates.
    Unsurprisingly, this led to some entertaining back and forth between Mercedes and Red Bull.

      Sainz ahead of Button is kind of crazy. To be fair Russell has the potential to be a future world champion and I think his ceiling is higher than Button's, but I don't think I'd put him in front of Button at the moment. As for the world champion, Button was a solid driver, but make no mistake it was the car, and not so much the driver that won that 2009 championship.

      Did you watch the video?
      It's how hard Sainz is against Max at the time when they are teammates.
      It's how hard Russell is now vs current Hamilton.
      It's a 2016 - 2018 Ricciardo vs 2016-2018 Verstappen.
      Ricciardo, Sainz, and Russell are just a bit tougher to beat at the time by their teammates at the time vs when Hamilton was teammates with Button.
      At no point that they are saying those drivers are better than Button wtf.

With Rosberg becoming a world champion while he was Lewis's team mate, how does that not put him at the top of the list?? I would love to see how they actually came up with the numbers for these guys cause it looks one eyed as hell. You also need to understand the psychological warfare that Verstappen wages on his team mates as well. That’s why Lewis, 7 x WDC with multiple cars just as dominant, if not more dominant, than the current RB, has won no more than 5 races on the bounce. Even Rosberg, whilst racing against Lewis as his team-mate, won 7 consecutive races…

I think he expected to be able to retire from the top of the grid, after an unparalleled stretch of form, and cement his legacy as the best. Instead, Verstappen has come to take away the mantle as the top driver on the grid, and even though Lewis is an all time great, he’s not the current great, and likely won’t retire as the current great. Because of that, it sounds like he’s trying to cement his legacy by belittling Max, so that when he leaves everyone remembers him as Sir Lewis Hamilton, and not the guy who lost to Verstappen and took a step back. Creating your own rating seems rather arbitrary. It helps to factor in legacy, but adding a less subjective measure such as points to measure the teammates against one another would've made a more convincing point. I do, however, agree with your overall conclusion.
    Legacy is something that needs to be considered, however, it is tough to use as a measurement of quality. Obviously, the number of championships, wins, podiums and poles between Verstappens teammates and Hamiltons is going to vary significantly, as none of Verstappens teammates apart from Perez have ever had a championship winning car. On the other hand every teammate Hamilton has had apart from Russell has had a championship winning car in his career. So I can see why you wouldn't solely rely on numbers.
    What I found weird is that you didn't include Gaslys performance past his Red Bull time but you did factor in Sainz' past Toro Rosso. Sainz wasn't close to being the driver he is today. And saying him and Verstappen had a tough fight back then seems a bit of a stretch considering Verstappen scored double the points over their time together which by points percentage is even worse than Gasly.
    I don't understand why Mercedes is so keen on talking down Verstappens and Red Bulls achievements. I don't remember this kind of attitude towards Mercedes achievements when they were dominating. Sure, there was a lot of negativity towards them as the dominating team in general but I can't recollect another team going as far as saying their achievements were basically invalid.

Currently Max's consistency and performance in many races have been noteworthy and reminiscent of some of the greats in F1 history. Lol at Hamilton's opinion on Bottas vs Perez. They are on similar levels, Bottas was as little of an obstacle to Lewis as Checo is to Max. • @cocojones959
      @cocojones959 Před 8 měsíci

      I'd still rate Bottas a bit higher then Perez seeing he had a much better consistency for qualifying. Arguably that gave Hamilton an easier time with strategy making Bottas the blocker. After Rosberg MB wanted a fast qualifier that wouldn't challenge Lewis and they got exactly that. Checo might have better race craft compared to Bottas but it's hard to judge seeing the car is geared more towards Max's driving style, something Bottas didn't have (as much of) a problem with.

    Hamiltons point is that Max got the 10 wins in a row cos he isn't challenged by his teammate. So then he should have been able to get it against Bottas while the car was so dominant. His highest win streak was 5 wins in a row and he is trying to take away from that achievement of 10 in a row. Pretty odd

    • @jacob3936
      @jacob3936 Před 8 měsíci +2

      But wasn't his point also that Bottas was a more challenging teammate, so saying he should've been able to do it doesn't make much sense as a conclusion to draw from that. Tbh, the reason Max has got the winstreak boils down to: dominant car, dominant driver, unchallenging teammate, number 1 driver/team favourite, unquestionably reliable car, team strategy and luck. And no, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, these are the ingredients you NEED to get a streak like this. For Lewis, if you look at the times his streaks were broken up, a lot of the time team strategy and luck were what let him down. Doesn't take away from Max's achievement but i think its as much or more a redbull achievement than it is one for max.

      There’s no point to doing what ifs in your head if facts don’t support it. Fact is, Jenson and Rosberg have ALWAYS been able to extract the most from their car, prime period or not. Jenson is easily the smoothest driver I’ve seen and Rosberg took everything he had to defeat Hamilton.
      Ricciardo couldn’t handle the pressure of an emerging max and where did that leave him? Floundering in a McLaren against someone younger than him AGAIN.
      Ricciardo for sure would have been a WDC if not for the emergence of the generational talents like max and lando and Leclerc and now possibly Piastri.
      Keep in mind both Jenson and Rosberg won their WDCs while their era’s generational talents were on the grid still

That just shows how much Nico has to give to win the 2016 championship. In 2016, the points were very close between them, if Lewis didn’t have 1 more dnf, what could have happened.

Also, he got beat by fischella, r.schumacher, trulli and barrichelo in the same car. His stats against alonso and hamilton completely flatter him, as hamilton and alonso had so much more bad luck. He was a very good race driver, but could only perform if the car was perfectly balanced.

    One thing overlooked here is that LH has been in F1 much longer than MV and thus he has had 8 more years of team mates. It would also seem to me that both Mercedes and RB decided to "play it safe" with team mates after the Rosberg and Ricciardo periods which ended in 2016 and 2018 respectively. But, comparing apples to oranges, yes LH is right he has had tougher team mates.

    Hamilton isn't wrong, but even if Lewis was the other Red Bull driver I still think Max would have a healthy lead in the Championship. Not nearly as much as he has now, but at this time Max is easily the best driver on the grid. And I think Max might even drive better if he was being pushed by someone close to his level (which out of the current drivers would be only Hamilton and Alonso). If Max is able to keep this up for a full career there will be no doubt he was the greatest driver of all time. ...and this is coming from a Hamilton fan.

      Every top team wants drivers who are capable of winning, Max happend to be the perfect match, RB did look for other compatible drivers, but in the end max is leading the championship on his own, why would you take the risk putting Alonso next to Max and risking a lot and creating tension within the team for statistically more points...A solid P2 driver every team would be happy with that could grab some wins if the number one driver fails. But if you not have a top car, you want two drivers that fight for some points...That is the only reason why Mercedes wanted to keep Bottas, solid P2 driver.

    "They have no competition" and "we had two drivers who were fighting" is just bullshit. Rosberg and Hamilton were fighting, after that, the races were just a "Valtteri, it's James" compilation. Insane how much they are talking down the current achievements of RedBull, when it was no different or even worse during their dominance. I mean, watching Perez you clearly see that its not "just the car", Max is just really quick and delivers race after race, while Bottas was basically always the fixed number 2 and was asked to let Lewis pass.
