Yamaha R6 rattle on cold start RESOLVED!!!

- Are you experiencing a loud rattle after cold start? Replaced cam chain tensioner? Replaced oil filter? Tried a different oil viscosity? I have tried all of these and they did not solve my problem. In this video, I go over what I did to replace the the timing chain and cam sprockets on my 2007 Yamaha R6.

@@bmxboi72 the valve play was good but unfortunately the exhaust valve of cylinder one are burned......at this point is out of my league so I just take it to the shop 😒
You needed to change the chain? Or just The tensioner, got The same problem
The valve spring pressure can be forcing the cam round hence the tensioner side is tight.
I’m confused on how you set the tensioner with the pliers. Don’t you need to spin the crank to loosen the tensioners clamp so it springs out?

I agree, but for me, the valve clearances was one a my troubleshooting steps. They were already adjusted to spec
this sound was on eny whether ? my gsx-s1000 makes nearly same noise on cold engine , only in cold whether , for few seconds , then noise gone .

Its not for everybody, but if you have the diligence and patience, you can certainly do it. I read the parts pertaining to this repair in the service manual many times before I started. You just have to familiarize yourself to gain confidence.

Do I also have to replace gasket when doing this or can I just replace tensioner and chain? And what other parts do I need to get when doing this labor?
Cool video, I was having issues with my R6 and I changed the Cam chain tensioner but was still having issues, I believe it’s the chain, now it won’t even click so I think the chain is off the gear, anyhow I think I’m going to replace the chain assembly like you did

But if the chain was Stretch why the noise goes away after a few seconds after the startup?
I have the same things ...only I change the tensioner after no sound ....the problem is tensioner

No, you can change to the tensioner without doing the full scope of this video.

mine does this only on cold starts and is an 07 with like 25k miles...i wanna try this but im scared to fuck up 😂 so far outside of this it runs smooth
You should be able to get away with a manual tensioner temporarily until you can replace the chain

Hey bud, when you went to install the exhaust cam, did you have to draw down the cam caps in order for the "E" timing mark to align with the cylinder head? I'm stuck at that part. My intake cam "I" mark lines up fine, but the "E" on the exhaust cam is a little high, like maybe if I draw it down with the cam caps, it'll compress the valve springs and allow the cam to seat into place. Thanks for any advice you may have!
This was a tough one for me too. I tried the method you are referring to but every time I tightened down the caps, the cam sprocket would skip a tooth. So I'd recommend setting the marks, then use something to wedge the chain guide on the intake side so the chain is tight(In the video I used a hex t-handle). Then go ahead and fasten down the caps. This helped keep the timing marks in place.
Sportbike Everything thanks for the reply! So since posting that comment, I’ve had success by utilizing a zip-tie through one of the holes on the exhaust cam sprocket. I literally zip-tied the chain to the sprocket and it prevented the tooth jump. Worked great!

Did you replace the cam sprockets? Was there wear on them? You didn’t show a close up of the wear on the sprocket? Why did you change them?
Sorry for the late response, didnt see this one. Yes I did change the cam sprockets even though there was no noticeable wear. Its best practice to change both chain and sprockets, especially since they are internal engine components.
Surely just resetting, or renewing the CCT if it's failed would have sorted it! It seems you went way overboard to fix a rattle. Unless this is an extremely high mileage bike, cam chains rarely need changing. At least you know it's all good now though.

Also chains don't stretch, they wear giving the impression they have stretched, and as they are constantly fed oil, even bikes with 100k miles have been known to have cam chain still in serviceable limits.

How many miles were you at when you noticed the noise?
If I can best recall, I think it was around 30k

For me it was cold start only. It could be your tensioner if rattling while accelerating
Does this rattling was just for a second after cold start, or it was rattling occasionally during warmup?
It would only rattle for the first 2-3 seconds and go away. The rattle never came back until I went to start it again from cold start.
@@TheMeek1000 Interesting,my R1 rattles occasionally from 3min after cold start and till It warms up. Could be also timing chain.
I would definitely think so. As long as your tensioner still has its integrity that might certainly be the problem.
@@TheMeek1000 I dont know how much you know about engines, but I would appreciate if you will check my video I made today in my channel how my engine rattles during warmup. I engaged clutch and brakes, and can clearly hear difference as rpms going down. Cant understand if the same sound as your engine had.
how much would it cost if a shop did this?
Parts will be around +/- $200, given that the shop only replaces whats needed and not the entire assembly. Then the labor charge which will vary, is where they can really dig into your pockets

my bike sound like this in cool engine.but a few second the sound gone...hmmm
Valves/shims and yea the tct/cct (timing chain tensioner/cam chain tensioner) which makes the fast ticking sounds and rattle.
Should be about 800 - 1.2k at most if you pay the shops to do it. Also in the first few seconds or minute(s) its mostlikely cos when you start it the oil hasnt circulated fully to that part of the engine.

these hydraulic tensioners are stupid. weve been using spring rachet tensioners for over 100 years and they had to fuck it up.
