This was my house. Words cannot express how grateful I am to Shawn and Harvey for fixing this driveway nightmare. Finally, I had someone who cared about doing it right! If you live in the Triad area of NC and you have a drainage problem....CALL SHAWN!
Thank you Patti! I'm glad we got things solved for you!
I have major drainage issues as well but this crew is too far
Nobody around Chicago,NWI does this kind of work drainage French drains and regrading ect. :(
@@GCFD why did you put rebar? It’s a relatively small expense and it adds so much more life to the driveway.
Sue the 1st contractor and get his license canceled.
@@leolldankology I called 15+ attorneys and no one would take the case because there was not enough money involved for them to litigate. I could win in small claims court, BUT, in NC the contractor could just appeal it to District Court where I would then need an attorney, so I think you can see the problem there. Also, unfortunately you don't need a license in NC to do concrete so that was also not an option.
The world needs more kind honest people like you.
Thank you!
Yeah I agree , I believe Shawn would rather pass on a job than do it subpar
Yep, hardest thing I've found with being a homeowner is finding trustworthy contractors/tradespeople.
@@timearp8185 20 years of being a homeowner, the only thing I've ever hired out was having trees cut down. And 2 hours in, I ended up firing those guys because they damaged the other surrounding trees.
lmao i just saw the first part of the video lol they know they didnt have to take out that much lmao that little we are the best in the city of richmond the best if u think am lying if your need anything poured contact us Garland Haskins Leon Harris H-H Concrete
What a great investment with the concrete buggy. You were so excited when it finally showed up. Definitely saving on labor and pain. Great job Shawn
It's been great. The other thing is Harvey rents it from me all the time now. I give him a trailer and his guys can come get it whenever and not have to worry about anything. It's a huge labor savings on his crew since it is so easy to get it now.
Wow! What a nightmare. She is fortunate to have found someone like you that was willing to step up and fix it.
Thank you! She agrees!
Harvey and his crew are amazing real professionals and continue keeping it real and being honest.
👍 I agree! They have solved some tough drainage issues for me and my customers.
If this was my home, or even if I was the neighbor, I’d buy these guys beers and set up a bbq for them.
Honesty and solid workmanship sometimes deserves a reward along with the pay check.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing these videos! I am looking to be a future homeowner and I cannot express the value your videos have added to my knowledge about topics that I had zero knowledge in!
Keep up the excellent workmanship and work ethics!!
What a great story from start to finish. Glad you guys were able to help her out!
👍 I am too!
Great job Shawn, glad you were able to fix it for her. Have a great day.
Thank you Brent!
I used to watch a lot of Apple Drains video until I found your channel. I’m convinced after watching both channels that PVC is the way to go. Great job and keep up the incredible videos!
Thank you Rod! I'm glad you're enjoying the channel!
I really appreciate your dedication to good results. Thanks Shawn

Shawn, you do amazing work and your crew is the best! Thank you for documenting this on video and sharing.
Thank you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Props to you for redoing it right. Damn that's a lot of work.
👍 Now it's done forever.
I don't own a property with a yard or anything that I'd need to worry about drainage personally, but damn does watching your videos make me want to have a drainage problem so I can get it fixed.
Haha be glad you don't have these problems!
Sean, ever since I happened to catch one of your video, I was hooked. I totally agreed with you in not bad mouthing others and move forward once you have a decent resolution. Enjoyed every single video and keep it up. Watching in UK.

Awesome job, I'm so glad you got to help her. Years ago we hired a guy to replace our roof shingles, he tore off old roof and tarped it, the next day it rained and flooded our home, every single room flooded, water literally was poring out of all ceiling light fixtures, found out the guy put up tarps that where full of holes, he disappeared a week later and we had to track him down
four days later after the house somewhat started to dry we all got horrible sore throats
Don’t know we’re you Iive but have did try watching the weather report before having your roof removed
3 vids in a day!! You’re on the grind 👍

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I literally feel sick to my stomach for this homeowner... Some of these contractors or so far over their head by accepting these jobs. And the fact that he over poured just to rid himself of the extra concrete... so, so sad. Great fix up though. Good job to you and your crew!
Love your videos hope u make them longer! I’m a roofing contractor in Texas and work with a lot of gutter subs and landscapers that claim to fix water issues. But u are beyond knowledgeable about how u approach each job you would be the king in Texas!
Thank you! I enjoy the problem solving aspect. I travel to TX to ride my mountain bike and especially like Palo Duro Canyon south of Amarillo 👍
@@GCFD I’m in east Texas on Cedar Creek Lake tons of rain yearly! Your work would change peoples lives down here
Matt: would you do a video on correct gutter installation and also what a gutter installer should not do? I’ve had flooding and the French drain installer said the gutters were the problem. All I know is my garage still floods.
Glad it rained so we could get some more videos. Keep it up!

I LIKE HOW YOU DO YOUR VIDS..YOU TALK A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON THEN YOU PUT IT FAST FORWARD AND YOU DO AWESOME WORK KEEP UP THE VIDS.. THANKS
Thank you Rich!
I'm impressed, you always do things the right way! I was so concerned you'd just put in a channel drain at the start of the video. Tearing out new concrete and re-pouring it was really the correct fix.
For sure! I could have charged for a channel drain which is what everyone was pushing for. But that wouldn't have offered 100% protection.
I just found your CZcams and wanted to let you know how nice it is to hear someone on CZcams with a college level vocabulary besides your excellent work.
Thank you Jeffrey! MS in BIology! 2007.
It can be hard to know who to trust these days. I’m glad you could make it right for her!
She thought because he was working in the neighborhood he must be good. She also thought that a driveway couldn't really be messed up.
Great story Shawn, a professional job, with a great result.
Good for you for fixing it the right way even though it meant removing the concrete! Great job
Thank you! It was a tough decision ripping out that concrete but the only way to fix it correctly.
Wow! That concrete guy did a terrible job, he basically ruined the poor lady’s house 😪. It looks like he didn’t even smooth the concrete let alone making sure it wasn’t sloping towards the house! I feel so bad for the lady.. 😢
The original guy sure made a huge mess! Luckily it's over now and things are fixed correctly now.
@@GCFD Yeah, luckily the lady got some money back
No mesh or rebar or anything either
@@wesley00042 I noticed that as well. Seems they put cuts in the concrete to relieve pressure instead
@@wesley00042 The new concrete has no rebar in it... So cheap to add about 10x strength to your concrete.....
It's painful to see new shiny concrete being crushed because someone failed at the basics... 😢
It was sooo painful. It was also painful to have to tell the homeowner we had to rip it out. That was the only option for a 100% solution that would not leave her house downslope of the concrete.
Great job Gary 👏
Awesome work and great video! Watched two videos last night and wake up to one :) Made my day 👍🇺🇸

That concrete guy needs to be slapped. No care, no due diligence, just pour the concrete, get the check, and leave. Anything else is not his problem. Real class act that guy. Glad she contacted you.
Yes I agree. He only agreed to give her a check if she took down the negative reviews, so LOOK OUT!
@@GCFD guess she didnt agree about the news article being taken down .
No kidding. That guy should know better than slope the drive to the house. He clearly didn't give a shit.
It sounds like the homeowner asked for the cheapest job possible, so no excavation, no grading. I dont think the concrete guy owns all the blame for this.
@@wendymorrison5803 Nope....I had a signed contract with the original contractor stating that the driveway would be 4" thick, original asphalt driveway removed and area graded to slope away from the house. Also had a 1 year workmanship warranty from the original contractor. And also BTW, the original contractor was not the cheapest quote I received.
I’m just curious... since the original slab was so thick and didn’t have any rebar... couldn’t it have been ground down to the correct pitch, even including the swale down the center? We’ve done this in our manufacturing plant when we need to change where runoff water flows. For those who don’t understand what I’m saying, it’s similar to how they “resurface” asphalt highways by grinding off the top layer.
Great comment! Here we had to come down further than we could have ground it. We took 3 dump truck loads of dirt out of there (not including the concrete that came out).
Grinding concrete is a very slow, difficult process with lots of airborne dust even with a vacuum dust collector. Surface would have been wavy and not professional looking. Removal was only solution due to elevations.
from the Netherlands thanks for the video Shawn
Thank you! 👍
Jobs like this will break your heart with so much waste that could have been avoided. Your concrete guys are so cool. I enjoy watching experts screed and float new concrete. I've never seen a bull float with an arm that long before. You guys were lucky to get rain after it set so you didn't have to keep wetting it. I hope the news gave you guys some free advertising for doing what should have been done initially. You certainly deserve it! "You never want to bad mouth anyone else's work. You just want to move forward." What a great example you set for others.
This is so disturbing. After recently getting an estimate for my driveway, I can’t imagine the original, demo, grading and replacement costs. 🤮. Shawn and the Full Bubble Gang to the rescue.
👍 This homeowner was feeling so defeated when she first called me out. She was having zero luck with the contractor who poured and the flooding was continuing. We were able to get right out there and jump on the solution quickly which took a huge load of stress off of her. Bringing the news into the situation was brilliant and provided the pressure on the original guy, plus she left a ton of negative reviews and pictures on social media.
@@GCFD Bringing the news media in was a stroke of genius. From what I've read elsewhere, many companies have run into problems staying in business when their name is even linked to something which seems shady or racist or "whatever". As it is, construction has enough issues with bad work performed so many people don't trust anyone to do the work correctly. Reminds me of a local cabinet maker. He wanted to retire, but nobody wanted to buy the company since his standards were of a Master Craftsman, which to many means "expensive". Too many people these days want the Ikea special furniture (mostly particle board) instead of well made cabinets which will last a lifetime. Eventually the cabinet maker just closed his business. He was getting into his late 70's and he was tired.
Thanks for showing how a correct construction job should be done.
Where did the 'Full Bubble Gang name come from aside from S. constantly referring to it?
Cam, it’s a good lesson for us all. Ask tradesmen about the fall and where will the water go. Water can cause a lot of damage as seen in this example. Great work Shawn. 👍
Nice save! Glad to hear the homeowner got some of her money back from the incompetent contractor. He should have known better. It's only right he be paid for the part of the driveway that was kept but he should have been fully responsible for also paying to fix the flood damage that was a direct result of his incompetence. How many people he has done this to, who unlike this homeowner couldn't afford to have someone else come and fix his poor workmanship?
Great comment! It's scary to think he is still out there pouring concrete and being so dishonest.
Keep the uploads coming! I love this channel
More on the way Jimmy! Thank you for watching!
Good and honest work. Congrats.
👍
wouldnt u want ur edges of ur slab to b much thicker almost like a mono pour anyway bravo to u and all the people helpin out neighbors congrates to u
We pour the edges thicker when a structure is going on the slab but not for a driveway. Great question!
Yay another video!
It was a late night. 👍
Awesome job man it's good to see there are people with a heart...fine job man...
👍
I love those little Bobcats, and I love making things right even more! 😍 This was great to see.
Curious if a simple 2" lip of concrete all the way down the edge of the old slab could have prevented the water from washing into house
In theory it would work, but leaving the house lower means the tiniest pinhole would still leak. When you take a problem like that and try to fix it (anything you do) means you now own the entire thing, so I wasn't willing to leave the house vulnerable to flooding.
This is my 2 sense of Eastern European engineering that would solve this issue. If you took the perimeter of the concrete next to the house and a concrete saw and you cut out a 2" drainage cavity along the concrete of the house and tapered it either to the back of the house or to the front or ran it into a pipe you would not have to throw anything out. Then you could cover that cavity with a nice plastic or metal mesh. This would be much cheaper for the homeowner and a quick job and it would solve the issue that easy wait. Have to think outside of the Box sometimes
👍 Nice Idea. The problem with that is if your drainage cavity every became overwhelmed the house would instantly flood again. Lowering the driveway below the house slab and sloping it away was the only complete solution here.
Do you not use expansion joints? And why not use the joint to add a Chanel to rout gutter water to the far side of her driveway? But the dry line is a win.
Your thinking outside of the box is every time the channel gets clogged with debris her house floods?
Honestly what you did their is what needed to be done we appreciate your hard work bat as a General Contractor for 25 years we always used Metal flashing under the siding and below the concretes grade this will prevent all water damage the only way to go. It isn’t hard to replace the bottom piece of siding and replace it that’s an awesome some. But thanks for paying it forward.
Thank you Rick! The homeowner is getting all new siding later this summer so she knows to place some flashing above her house slab. Thanks for watching! - Shawn
Nice work. You and your crew are very professional!
Thank you!
Man whoever poured that pad the first time should be ashamed of themselves, good on you bro

@@GCFD - You're wrong about not "bad mouthing some elses work". If the facts prove that a contractor is doing shoddy work, telling the truth about that contractor is not bad-mouthing, it is warning future customers. Ad hominem attacks that are not substantiated by facts are wrong.
The important hing that needed to be mentioned is that people need to get two or three estimates as well as have the contractor explain what the job will accomplish. A contractor who simply says "I'm going to lay a driveway and it'll look good" is like a doctor that says "I'll give you these pills and you'll feel better" - neither one is solving a problem.
Out of curiosity, why wasn't it an option to just add the new concrete in the area the old guy removed so it slopes from the house to the driveway?
That was an option. The problem with that is the slab was still sloping into the house and still higher than the house slab. This means flooding could still occur if the two ever separated or the new concrete got overwhelmed. Since it was a house, we went with the 100% solution.
How u changed elevations would of saved money
Good work Shawn and Team-.
👍 Thank you!
Great fix! Hard work, awesome result!

I've worked in the building industry in Australia all my life, and what this lady had happen happens often.
In Australia concrete is the only trade you don't need an apprenticeship for.
What happens is guys that have done a bit of floating or wheeled a barrow, they think: "hey this is easy as", they get a Builders License and are let loose on the GP! Very few of them ever take into account where the water is going to go when they set up and box. To fall concrete into a building is evidence he gave absolutely no thought to drainage!
By the way, in Australia, people who have building work done, that is sub standard can call the Department of Building and Consumer Affairs in any state, and the guy is held accountable for his work! Of course this is OK if the guy is licensed. Using unlicensed tradesmen is discouraged because legally, your screwed!
I notice he also did a botch job of cutting the lowest plank on the cladding. It looks like a crocodile ravaged it!
Thanks for sharing! I wondered it anyone would notice that cut job on the siding. Luckily she is getting new siding later this year.
@@GCFD yes, it was the first thing I noticed. Glad the home owner will sort it out. Plenty of scrupulous tradespeople in Australia in the concrete industry but there are plenty good honest ones too. Concrete around a home can be fantastic as long as it slopes away from the home as Shawn says.
I've seen this in a couple of videos of yours where you pour new concrete without rebar or wire mesh reinforcing. Here in Canada we put reinforcing in every pour we do....is it not required by your local code? The driveway would be much stronger and wouldn't crack with the steel in the pour.
We have extremely stable subsoils around here and nobody uses rebar. We do find rebar every once in a while in something that we are tearing out.
@@GCFD Thanks for answering this. I've been wondering for awhile why you put in the best drainage pipe, then skimped on concrete reinforcement.
@@neeosstuff7540 ppl
You really need wire mesh and a lot of joints up north in the colder weather because the grounds freeze. It's not needed in tropical climates like here. If I were doing it though, I would use at least the wire mesh. It's not that much more money and it really holds up nicely. But again that's really just a personal opinion and it doesn't require it.
@@TheCapitalVice Never seen concrete without rebar 1 foot on center and I live in the south on the Ocean!! I can not believe you are pouring without rebar or even fiberglass strand!!! Ya learn something every day!!! I am guessing this is for flatwork only and rebar is used on foundations every time?
You're a good man Shawn!! Great and awesome video! 👏👍👋

I would be devastated, some contractors shouldn't even be in business, this is why I check reviews before hiring any company. You guys are awesome for your knowledge, skills, experience and craftsmanship.

glad to see you fixed this feel so bad for the lady that just messed up she got more problems then most this because i am sure that sheet rock got wet also from that water coming in.
Now she can move forward with her home.
I’m curious if you waterproofed the foundation of the house after tearing out the concrete. And, I noticed that the drainpipe from he gutter was just leading out on to the drive way. Won’t that possibly lead to problems later on, especially during heavy rainstorms?
Yes the homeowner did some waterproofing along the slab. And no, the gutter water on the concrete won't be a problem since we properly sloped the concrete. There wasn't enough fall to send the water into a pipe.
Only waterproofing no flashing right
What surprises me with the new concrete is that it looks like there has not been put a wire-mesh/metal-grid inside - is that not usual in your area?
Won't the concrete without it crack easily once a heavier delivery truck or something drives onto it?
We have extremely stable subsoils here so we rarely ever see rebar or mesh used in driveways, patios, and walkways.
@@GCFD Thank you for explaining!
@@GCFD now I understand as to why no rebar was used. Thanks

The only good thing about this was that the exiting concrete didn't have enough time to fully cure (perfectly normal--it takes weeks) so it was relatively easy to break up. What a rotten situation.
👍
It takes years to fully cure
@@electricaf365
Hoover Dam is still curing. There was so much concrete they had to run refrigerated water through the concrete to avoid overheating - Due to the chemical reaction heat concrete gives off as it cures.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_Dam#Concrete
@@darwinawardcommittee I’ve heard that.
@@darwinawardcommittee When I lived in Germany, I used to see a lot of concrete bridges and overpasses which had been built but no road was going to them. I asked someone about it and they informed me the road was planned to be installed but they wanted the concrete work to cure first and the soil to settle so it wouldn't continue to cause issues when the road was built. Many of the German roads last for much, much longer than the roads we have here in the US. Both ways work, but one is aimed at the long term whereas the other is for the short term. To me, the US has an issue with the politician only wanting things to last as long as they are in office --just my perspective.

wow good video ,one thing that is huge is tamping down the base /gravel before the pour helps keep the driveway from cracking .
The homeowner said the original guy didn't have a plate compactor so she was happy we did.
This is exactly why I tell customers my concrete work is so much more expensive than others, I take the time to do some slope analysis and grade and slope the concrete to avoid drainage and flooding problems, occasionally you have to do bad slope when meeting existing slabs but it's always best to keep the water away from the house and foundation.
Nice! Show your customers this video if they ask you to drop your price.
You can do all the right things, get three quotes, check references, see past work and still get screwed. A proper company would remedy they're own mistake. But glad you were there to correct the issue properly. Also happy to hear the local news was there. Hopefully she gets some compensation from the original contractor. I always try and use local established contractors for jobs and beware of the underbidders, you get what you pay for.........Happy to hear she got some money back from original contractor
