    I wonder who the 58 people are that gave this a thumbs down. This is a nearly perfect how-to video. It's clear, concise, and SHORT (i.e., well-edited). No long, unnecessary explanation of "how a snowblower works" or anything. Just describe the problem, show the fix. This could be a template for all CZcams how-to videos.

      It's only a bad idea if you don't know anything about shear pins/bolts.
      Did I forget to mention that I used a bolt of the same diameter as the
      original shear pin's? Did I also not mention that I, then, heated said
      bolt up to it's Curie Temperature then quenched in snow (ice water)
      achieving a very brittle bolt indeed. If so I apologize. It's not nice
      to say what you did btw RJ.

    • @Gantzz321
      @Gantzz321 Před 6 lety

      Jeremy Schoonover I don't bother messing around with making the bolts brittle, been using low grade bolts of soft metal that just snap off so easy its scary. Been using them for 30 years on the same blower and have never had an issue. Still have both original gear box's also. so Darwin that RJ,.Stop buying into the manufactures hype of "you must buy our product" , be a man grow a pair.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety

      +mactionY2K5 You probaly hit something solid that caused the pin to shear. That is what it is supposed to do. As opposed to destroying the machine. I doubt you will be covered, but who knows.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety

      Does that set of blades turn freely on the axle? With just one set of blades stopped turning, that sounds like a pin/bolt. If it was a belt, usually the blades won't turn at all.

  • @jonathanwhitney494

    I have a question that may or may not be related. I have a yard machines 22 " snowblower like the one in the video. My auger turns but not very fast. The thrower wheel goes pretty fast, but when it hits snow slows down and won't throw snow past the machine. It sounds like a plastic grinding noise when it starts to rotate again. Any idea on what the issue could be? Any help would be awesome.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 9 lety

      There is a belt inside the machine. When you pull the lever to activate the augers, it pushes a pulley against the belt to tighten it. I am guessing it is not tightening the belt enough. Try manually pulling the cable to see if the augers turn better. Adjust the cable to take some slack out.

  • @LivDoesItDiy

  • @Dear.Genius
    @Dear.Genius Před 4 lety

    You have to align the augers properly before you replace the shear pin. Also, any grade 2 bolt will also work and are cheaper that shear pins and ALWAYS keep a couple extra around.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, you have to align the auger. And NO, I do NOT recommend using a bolt in place of a shear pin/bin. Not a wise choice.

    • @brianbaker359

    I bought some cheap wrenches and I keep them and some extra bolts right on the machine. I broke a bolt once, I figure that's the best way to guarantee I don't break another one. ;)

    • @brianbaker359
      @brianbaker359 Před 3 lety

      As long as they are proper Shear Bolts as shown in the video. Unfortunately some owners just install a normal bolt which can be a fatal recipe for gearbox damage if augers get jammed.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage Před 3 lety

      @@brianbaker359 True, I didn't specify that, did I. Yes, I actually brought a bolt in for comparison so I'd get the correct one. IIRC, I think I actually had to take two trips because I didn't bring and example or model number first time and there are a few different sizes for Ariens blowers.
      I have a friend who just pays a handyman to fix his stuff. Well, he had a blower which he used on gravel but didn't adjust the shoes for it so he always picked up rocks and occasionally they would jam an auger. Well, his "handyman" would just throw regular bolts in and after a while he ended up having to by new gears for the auger gearbox.

      Try and rotate auger so you can get the hole over top of the location where pin sheared off then take a smaller diameter bolt or nail and drive out the sheared off pin. Replace with a proper shear pin not a regular bolt.

    • @kc7846
      @kc7846 Před 3 lety

      Apparently this pin had been broken for awhile and I wasn't having any luck driving it out. So I stopped to see my "guy" about fixing it thinking that the whole thing would have to be taken apart. He told me he could drive it out in a few minutes with no problem. So I took the machine to him and he grabbed a punch and a big ol' ball peen and proceeded to whack away at it with no luck. "never had this happen" he said. So I left it with him and he drilled it out, which I was hesitant to try and possibly ruin the shaft. I just got it back today and all is well, This is the most trouble I've had with the machine in 37 years of NE Pa, winters. Not bad. Thanks.

    Hey. I have an issue with my snow blower. The auger/blades wont STOP spinning. Any ideas as to why this is?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 9 lety

      Different issue and depends on your blower. Could be that something is stuck and not releasing, or a spring part broke or fell off and the part is not releasing. On mine, when I push the lever, it pushes a pulley against a belt causing it to tighten and the augers to turn. When I release the lever, the pulley pulls back and the belt is now loose. Yours might be different,

      shyflirt1 mine is the same. I tinkered with it a little and figured out that the "braking" mechinism that drops onto the bottom pulley is worn out. Once i replace that i should be good. Thanks!

    RJ question for you sir. Shear bolt on right side is missing. But for the life of me I can not find the hole the bolt goes through in the shaft. I turn the auger , and it's all shaft . No hole.
    There is not enough play for it to be a simple problem of sliding the auger section back and forth along the shaft to find the hole. It's solid shaft all the way around.
    Have you ever seen anything like it? ?!?!

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety +1

      +Daniel T You might need to move the auger to the left or the right to get the hole to line up?

    • @danielt2151
      @danielt2151 Před 8 lety +1

      +RJ The Bike Guy Thanks for the reply RJ. I tried that and there isn't enough play to move the auger more than a fraction of an inch. And there is not even a partial hole showing either to the left or right.
      It got dark so I stopped trying for the day.
      I KNOW it's got to be there. I now wonder if the chute is bent in and that's what is preventing me from moving it far enough to find the hole.
      Tomorrow I'll give it another shot
      And I've been cruising through your bike videos. Great stuff. Thanks.

      Maybe the remains of the old bolt/pin are in the hole?

      +RJ The Bike Guy Wow , that was a quick reply! Thought of that, thinking I could drift it out, but it's solid steel. I cleaned it off really well thinking I could see the bolt still in the shaft. But that wasn't it. I'll figure it out tomorrow, during daylight hours. Appreciate it.

      +RJ The Bike Guy What a STUPID I Am ! :) You were right sir. Bolt was sheared off flush with the shaft. There was so much rust, and it was so dark, that I couldn't see where the shaft stopped and the bolt started. The WD40 I cleaned it off with yesterday afternoon ate enough of the rust away overnight that I could see the bolt this morning. Quick punch with a brass drift and out it came. $11 dollars, a few quick turns with the ratchet, few quick squirts with a grease gun, and it's all fixed.
      Now I have to have a talk with my Dad's friend who "tuned" his blower up to the tune of $90 because there is no way he greased the shaft.
      Thanks you very much for you help and replies.
