Very informative video and so much of information is covered. Every time I listen to it I understand something more which I missed the previous time.
And for the people fighting in the comment section about Aryan/Dravidian, North vs South controversies, the genetic difference between all of us Indians and even south Asians as a whole doesn't have any clean divide of 2 groups. All of us are admixture of Ancestral North Indian and Ancestral South Indian population groups. Of course there is a gradient of high to low proportion of ANI when you go further south into India from the North.
Not even everyone speaking the same language and identifying as same cast today is going to have similar admixture of ANI and ASI. To put it in simple terms if you test the DNA of everyone in a caste group within a single state in India you will find a varying admixture of ANI and ASI.
So moral of the story: All of these studies and findings should excite us Indians that we are all a mixed group and very closely related to each other genetically no matter what language we speak and where we live in India now.

I'm seeing a great deal of irrational reaction to the very nuanced argument being made here. This is a discussion about a recent Scientific paper , if you aren't an expert in the space then it will be very difficult for you to gain a correct understanding of the concepts being relayed.
To come to this first humble of your limitations in this discussion being a non expert is the FIRST step of a rational human being.
Second, it is important ...knowing ones limitations to constantly check ones expectations for language used in this discussion against the usage of those words in a Scientific context ...for example, as Scientists "theory" is a much more refined and rigorous descriptor than the laymen assumption that it means "a guess". This is wrong...if you are prone to making this mistake when you hear in this video "migration" , "admixture" , "mixing" , "gradient" then you are simply not prepared to engage in any aspect of this discussion. You should step back...educate yourself...formalize your thinking to be Scientifically rigorous then come back.
As a Scientist and Engineer ...having this discipline is the principle tool to allowing absorption of complex new ideas in the ongoing research in the areas we seek expertise or even just basic understanding...laymen wishing to participate in Scientific conversations MUST respect this fact.
Finally, for those who have rejected the idea of migrations into the sub continent to form its modern form (a contention which is completely uncontroversial to any linguist, archeologist or geneticists as of 2018...in fact it is as certain a fact as the reality of a hot sun in the sky) I pose you a question.
Do you accept that modern homo sapiens sapiens emerged from Africa around 80,000 years ago and succeeded to replace homonid cousins they found along the way (Neanderthal, Denosivan and at least two unnamed cousins).
If you do (and you must as the evidence for this is also as certain as a hot sun) then you must agree that migration into the subcontinent happened from outside at least at this point in time. From there one can gain an epiphany of understanding the nuance of the argument being made in this video and what that means....this is not a restatement of anything new...it is yet another reduction in the fog of ignorance that had existed in our understanding of the complexity of the migrations. The question of if they happened is obvious for all reasons.
Note even here the careful language used to describe this particular research in the video at the end:
"Looking at our own history...which have taken place in Eurasia...and the unity of the human civilization is also important. That we all came from Africa, then we had these two major expansions that took place in Eurasian and this what has shaped what we know the modern society to be ..or a major part of it. "
^^^ That's the qualified statement of Scientist who knows the research very well. Heed his example.

I don't see why people are getting annoyed for no reason. Isn't it exciting to know that people from North Africa, Europe, Middle East, Central Asia and Indian Subcontinent are connected by a common ancestry.
I think we should be glad of the fact that we're related, connected, and that we share common origins. There is no shame in accepting the truth, when in fact the truth is so interesting. (I say truth because although this a theory, it is backed by strong DNA trails, archaeological findings and linguistic reconstructions)
Still we argue each other for no good reason whatsoever. It's high time people realise that we should end the needless clamour and embrace the different cultures we have, as we're basically the same people who got separated on our journeys. The Sanskrit saying, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (The world is my family) summarises this scientific theory and also my point.

    2) Some Yamnaya people had, far before that European movement to the East, had gone extremely far to the East, reaching Altaï Mountains where they created the Afanassievo Culture... Addendum: Dear Probir, while I completely agree with the scientific outlook and the approach that needs to be taken in studying ancient history, I would like to point out that though most of mythology is filled with imaginary details, it does help in setting up a few ideas about the mindset of the people who created those myths. I am an atheist and far more likely to be dismissive about myths and legends, but I do believe that some of the history of a region can be surmised or gleaned from folklore and from legends and the languages used then. I am not saying that it is a perfect method or that it is even logical every time, but from our modern outlook we could possibly extrapolate some of the myths - maybe distillation would be a better way to describe it.
I am no Pargiter, nor do I even approve of the way his history was obtained. However, I do see that some of it could indeed be plausible. Say, the Nagas, who I believe fervently were probably the original inhabitants of this land. The Naga aradhana cult spreads from distant South India to the very Northern-NorthEastern borders. All the puranas and the folklore mention the conflicts between Kshatriyas and the nagas who are often described as vile, craftily opportunistic and violent people.
My idea is that this might actually be the contempt of the invaders for the losing side, the indigenous people. So, mythology might not exactly be completely useless. Sifting fact from fiction is a perilous task, but if we could extract something from the chaff, would it not be useful?
(I know that you were talking of a far more ancient period but it still would make sense to look at some of the linguistic comparisons, from ancient mythology of not just this region but elsewhere too).

Which makes most scientists argue that the Steppes is a secondary homeland where the large majority of Indo European languages spred from into Europe and South and Central Asia. However the Anatolian branch split from the core before reaching the Steppes, probably somewhere in the Southeastern Caucasus.

    Genetics:
Bloodlines have connected the dots ( Science as in Genetics )
There is "general agreement" that north and south Indians share a common maternal ancestry which indicates that those who invaded Indus Valley were only Men and later interbred with local population. A series of studies show that the Indian subcontinent harbors two major ancestral components namely the Ancestral North Indians (ANI) which is "genetically close to Middle Easterners, Central Asians, and Europeans", and the Ancestral South Indians (ASI) which is clearly distinct from ANI. These two groups mixed in India between 4,200 and 1,900 years ago (2200 BCE-100 CE), where after a shift to endogamy took place, possibly by the enforcement of "social values and norms" by the "Hindu Gupta rulers".
The first steps ever by genetic science into the Harappan space, both studies are based on DNA samples taken from those same burials at Rakhigarhi.
Importantly, the R1a genetic marker, typical of the Western Central Asian Steppes, is missing in the Rakhigarhi sample.
“The Rakhigarhi samples have a significant amount of ‘Iranian farmer’ ancestry. You won’t find this DNA in the north Indian population today, but only in south Indians,” said Niraj Rai, head of the Ancient DNA lab at Lucknow’s Birbal Sahni Institute for Palaeosciences. He also said ““We aren’t getting any Central Asian gene flow in Rakhigarhi. Comparing Rakhigarhi with data from modern Indian populations, we have concluded that they have more of an affinity with the Ancestral South Indian tribal population compared to the north Indian population.”
Some people argue that there was no Aryan Invasion. If there was no invasion why is there only a relationship in "male" DNA (y-chromosome) between Indians and the other indoeuropean people? Only 17% of Indians carry the indoeuropean male dna signature. But in the west there are populations where the share is almost 100% and no trace of the ancient indian male DNA (DNA that would correspond to the ancestors of the Dravidian part of the Indian population) can be found anywhere to the West of the Indian subcontinent. Why is the indoeuropean DNA only found in the upper castes?
The Aryan invasion theory is uniformly and categorically accepted at every single university of international repute and there is no serious scholar in the field of Indo-European Studies who thinks otherwise.
    Who built Indus Valley Civilization?
Many scholars believe that Neolithic Iranians (Iranian Agriculturalists)/Elamites got mixed with South Asian Hunter Gatherers and formed I.V.C.
Every Historian who specialized in Indian History knows that before the Aryans entered India , The Elamites had entered India.
Some claim that it was Dravidian culture.
Meluḫḫa is the Sumerian name of a prominent trading partner of Sumer during the Middle Bronze Age. Most scholars associate it with the Indus Valley Civilization.
Many scholars today who confidently identify Meluhha with the Indus Valley Civilization (modern South Asia) on the basis of the extensive evidence of trading contacts between Sumer and this region. Sesame oil was probably imported from the Indus River region into Sumer: the Sumerian word for this oil is illu (Akkadian: ellu). One theory is that the word is of proto-Dravidian origin: in Dravidian languages of South India, el or ellu stands for sesame. An alternative, proposed by Michael Witzel, is that it derived from a "para-Munda" language spoken in the Indus Valley Civilization.
There is extensive presence of Harappan seals and cubical weight measures in Mesopotamian urban sites. Specific items of high volume trade are timber and specialty wood such as ebony, for which large ships were used. Luxury items also appear, such as lapis lazuli mined at a Harappan colony at Shortugai (modern Badakhshan in northern Afghanistan), which was transported to Lothal, a port city in Gujarat in western India, and shipped from there to Oman, Bahrain and Sumer.
The Dravidians began in south-eastern Iran when Elamites migrating from the west (Khuzistan area) mixed with Eritrean Africans who had settled in the Ormozgan area. These African settlers had crossed Southern Arabia to get to south-eastern Iran and were absorbed by the Elamite migrants, becoming a new people called the Dravidians. The Dravidians migrated to the Indus River valley in 7000 BC, where they mixed further with Nihalis and Adivasis, and later the Mundas. They spread out to occupy the entire Indian sub-continent, but were later confined to the southern part when the Indo-Aryans arrived in India around 1300 BC.
Where did the Elamites come from? In 18,000 BC, the Kebarans (Proto-Boreans) arrived in Mesopotamia from the Horn of Africa. In 15,000 BC they split into the Nostratics, the Dene-Daics, the Afro-Asiatics, and the Amerinds. Around 12,000 BC, the Nostratics split into the Elamites, the Kartvelians, and the Eurasiatics (ancestors of the Indo-Europeans, and many others). The Dravidians branched off from the Elamites around 7000 BC.
The Elamitic language does resembles Dravidian. Mr.David McAlpin (Researcher) has made a demonstration based on 57 Elamite words (mostly verb stems) paired with corresponding Dravidian terms. The correspondences are, on the whole, straightforward and interlocking. A beginning is made in reconstructing the phonology of Proto-Elamo-Dravidian.
Below are some of the examples.
    Elamites Dravidian Meaning
    Un Unnu Eat/Drink
    Vur Uru Place
    Atta Attan Father
    Slive Shiluve Holy Cross
    Amma Amma Mother
    Kol Kollu Kill

Aryan in Sanskrit means Noble person and is used to address in respect.
Shiva the original god of the world and creator of Tamil as well, derived another language called Sanskrit out of it.
The basic alphabet and classification and differentiation is vowels and consonants is proof to that.
The letters ळ & ळ्ह (ള & ഴ) is found in vedic Sanskrit and only Tamil and Malayalam use them!
Shiva, the Aadi-Yogi taught Ayurveda and Yoga. He taught the Vedas & Upanishads, the Ramayana and puranas.
The eyes of the Vedas - Jyotishaastra was taught by his son Karthikeya or Muruga or Subrahmanya (of Brahma)!. His other son Ganapati wrote the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Epics Mahabharata etc. His consort Parvati was daughter of Himalayas and therefore he migrated northwards and settled in Kailasa mountains.
Thus the vedic religion of Purusha, Brahma and Sakti, was propagated north!
The fisherwoman's son Vyaasa advised Ganapati to write the scriptures.
Later he taught it to his disciples and asked them to propagate essence of dharma throughout the different parts of the world. Vysambaaya went North India and taught the Vedas to the North Indians who took it further west as well to Europe via middle East crossing Hindukush & Afghanistan & Iran and even to Africa by the sea. The Naga worship is very common in the Western Indian peninsula of Kerala. In Kerala, the aristocratic Kshatriya/warrior class families had a specially debated area near their homes dedicated to the Naga God & goddess namely NagaRaja & NagaRani. That place is thick with forest trees and plants and nobody is to cut any of them.
Arjuna married a Naga princess named Uloopi.
Bhima as a boy was protected by the Nagas who benefited and took care of his health rejuvenating and making him capable with the power of 1000 elephants.

This left the Aboriginals in S Australia in place. The people that went to Africa over 100,000 years ago got cut off from any remixing and either mutated or mixed with other hominids and remained isolated until about 5,000 years ago in the horn of Africa.

There is substantial evidence that the Indus Civilisation was pre- Aryan.
The Indus Civilisation was mainly urban, while the early Vedic society was rural and pastoral. There were no cities in the Vedic period.
The Indus seals depict many animals but not the horse. The horse and the chariot with spoked wheels were the defining features of the Aryan-speaking societies. The bronze chariot found at Daimabad in Western Deccan, the Southernmost Indus settlement, has solid wheels and is drawn by a pair of humped bulls, not horses.
The tiger is often featured on Indus seals and sealings, but the animal is not mentioned in the Rigveda.”

Many people may not understand the whole concept but in summary reasearch showed:
    1. ALMOST every Indian is ASI+ANI gene combination (exceptions are recent migrants)
    2. Above mentioned two genes orgin have mainly three sources (exceptions will be a fourth contributions of chinese/east asian gene which likely will be found in later studies as more evidence collect) : Ancient hunters gatherers, iranian agriculturalist and Stepes pasteuralists
    3. ASI=Ancient hunters gatherers + iranian agriculturalist
    4. ANI= Ancient hunters gatherers+ iranian agriculturalist + Stepes pasteuralists
    5. Brahmin caste has more proportions of Stepes pasteuralists than other caste
    5. Stepes pasteuralists migration is 'associated' with origin and spread on Indo-european language in India as well as Europe based on genetic research data.
WHAT study didnot show, neither claim
    1. Hindusim as such an Identity of being India may predate above said migration. Brahmin and other castes structure may have developed in a later part of Indian history/culture
    2. Migration may have borught different people as described above but may not have gave 'origin' to Indian/Hindusim religion

    • @rajmalhotra7709
      @rajmalhotra7709 Před 5 lety +15

@ferzy09 wrong! Language is not equivalent to culture or religion. Steppes may have influenced the language and to some extent 'written' scripture', but NOT the culture or religion (say Hinduism). Hinduism or vedic life style was already developed and being practiced PRIOR to steppes migration. Proof: Rakhigiri skeleton sample lacks the steppes ancestry, however the archaeological evidence suggest it being same as harappa civilization. Therefore Hindu religion and in that sense Indian culture/civilization is way older than steppes migration (1500-2500 years ago) and much likely has developed EVEN BEFORE Iranian agriculturalist migration (8000-10000 years ago). Christianity as well as Islam is nothing but imitation of Hindu scriptures. All indian have SAME ROOT Genetic make up that is ASI gene, Its the ANI proportion that changes when we go from south to North.

      @rajmalhotra7709 Před 5 lety +7

@Moses Tanui let me get it straight, according to your statement, Steppe people 'brought vedic religion'. Absolutely nonsense like 'Aryan invasion theory'. Aryan invasion theory was so wrong from its inception by colonialism, phrase keep on changing from 'Aryan invasion > aryan migration to no aryan mingling theory'. If talking about science, cite facts and figures not what you 'believe or taught to believe'
There is no 'equivalence to vedic religion' anywhere else where 'steppe pasteuralist' migrated. Read: Rest of western eurasia'. Your statement presume that 'religion just start out of thin air as soon as a race move into a much ancient heavily populated civilized society'. If steppes were 'inventor of 'Hinduism' or Vedic religion then they must have founded some other similar religion elsewhere in the world which YOU KNOW NOWHERE EXISTS.
Rakhigiri already has 'architecture in place' much similar to what had been found in other indus valley civilization AND Rakghigiri is ANCIENT than harappa and Mohanjodaro. So not finding 'any steppe DNA in Rakhigiri skeleton means ancient INDIANS (which were ASI & AASI gene pool in different mixture) already had a way of living in civilized society that westerner named it as 'Hinduism (i.e. Religion of people beyond Sindhu river). No Indian (read Hindu) neither will claims or whould claim that they follow a 'religion' rather they will belief a noble way of living life (Aryan word means Noble)
So who invented Hinduism or Vedic religion?
Answer is very simple: NOBODY. AASI gene (Native Africans, mother or father of all Homo sapiens race) flow happened in India much before 75000 years ago as it was happening elsewhere in the rest of the world as out of africa theory postulates. Difference lies than unlike rest of the world where african people (hunters and gatherers) kept on moving rather than settling, in India, they SETTLED (Read about Andman Nicobar Island Tribe. Why they settled only in India for such a long time, there is no clear explanation. Over the course of > 75000 years, there was already a 'way of living developed among these nomads Hunter and gatherers' which was significantly different than Hunter and gatherer society elesewhere (Read about ancient cave arts found in M.P. and southern states of India). 'Shiva worship was already developed by these native Indians PRIOR to Then Iranian agriculturalist migration around 10000 years ago. I can keep going on and on here but let me stop here with final comment:
INDIANS HAS THEIR IDENTITY AS RACE/RELIGION/ETHNICITY/WAY OF LIVING IN HARMONY (THEY WELCOME AND MIXED WITH NEW GENE POOL BUT KEPT THEIR UNIQUENESS OF BEING INDIAN/HINDU/HUMAN Throughout this migration waves) and this has >50000 YEARS old ANCESTRY. INDIAN GENE HAS BEEN AND WILL KEEP ON MIXING WITH NEW COMING GENE POOL (The way it was done while forming ASI, ANI and a new yet to be classified gene pool where Indian gene pool mixed with east asian/Chinese gene pool).
Hope it clears some doubts and propaganda.

So this seems to be saying that original Indians are the forefather of the Andaman and Australian tribes. South Indians came from Iran and North Indians came from the Central Asian Steppe. Both can't be called original Indians!! Early Indus valley could be culturally more Iranian and later could be more Steppe. Today's Indian culture is a mix of whatever was left at the end of the Indus valley. But today's Iranians don't look like South Indians and steppe people look more Mongoloids than whites. North Indians could't be decedents of the Mongoloids. It would be interesting to know more about what happened after Indus Valley to these lands. I don't think this study has answered anything and there are more holes in the new theories they are proposing.

South Asians are basically Caucasoid while some have Mongoloid admixture. There are three ancestry components in modern Indians: native hunter gatherers, Iranian farmers and Steppe pastoralists. The Iranian farmers component together with the Steppe pastoralists make up the predominant majority of the ancestry of modern South Asians. The native hunter gatherers component makes up only a minority today. Also the main paternal lineages such as R1a, R2, H, L and J are all of West-Eurasian origin. The “Indian cline” is part of the West-Eurasian cluster. Also anthropologic studies show that Indians are Caucasoid. The native hunter gatherers, known as Veddoid are distinct from East Asian or Andamanese. The Veddoids are closest to other Caucasoid populations. Conjecture? A very Eurocentric view but I am not surprised as this is often a part of a colonial mentality. Who were ancient Iranians and were there not people in India when they arrived. I agree that there have been many migrations into India. You talk about African hunters and gatherers but in my opinion you minimize this influence. If Africa was a domonant continent today aI believe what you yourself called conjecture your historical analysis would be quite different. What makes you think that migrations from Africa stopped? Also ai am not sure of the timing of rice cultivation but I imagine it is quite ancient similar to corn cultivation by the Native Americans? I wonder if you notice the pattern of attaching the beginig of agriculture to grains familiar in the West. In West Africa and Papua New Guinea yam cultivation existed as early as wheat cultivation in the Euphrates. Perhaps the European due their lack of familiarity with this food crop, still referred to this as hunting and gathering but it still is and always was farming. The dates of Teff cultivation in Ethiopia and sorghum cultivation in other parts of Africa may have also been as ancient.. Were the Khoi Khoi of South Africa the worlds oldest pastoral groups as they are a part of the Khoian group one of the worlds oldest people? There is a tendency to run away from African decent even when it is written all over you. It is not just hunters and gatherers but Ethiopians, Egyptians and Nubians. Many Tamils have acknowledged these are their origins. When you your linguistic studies how often are your languages compared with modern African languages? Languages like Telegu, Malayalam and Tamil have strong similarities with Mande and other Niger Congo African languages yet some want to insist Dravidian languages are Indo-European. Your video is informative and perhaps factual but I believe you only present one side of the story. Perhaps it is time we start researching the other side.It will be of benefit to us all. Farming has multiple origins. Different plants were domesticated in different parts of the word independently of each other. Wheat is currently the most popular crop in the world and it was domesticated in the middle east (just because wild wheat was already being eaten by middle eastern hunter gatherers just before the agricultural revolution). Teocinte, wild maize were also being used by american hunter gatherers before they started to domesticate that. Also it is demonstrated that when a HG group invents farming it quickly expands over their HG neigbors and mix with them. As you said, some subsaharan africans from cameroon also invented farming. They quickly increased in numbers and expanded through the continent. This is how the bantu language family expanded in africa. They pushed san hunter gatherers into kalahari desert.

Latest DNA study of 4500yrs old Rakhigarhi sample show that IVC DNA are mostly similar to modern Indians. So Indians may have steppe blood but only in different ratio, be it Indo Aryan or Dravidian speaking community.
The same study also show that IVC and Iranian at the time are different. Please don't trust Vasant Shinde, his interview totally contradict the paper and reject Aryan migration theory, even though he has his name in the research paper.

Ironically the Iranian_Neolithic ancestry survived in North Indian more than South while the language of the Iranian_Neolithic people survived more in the South than North. The Iranian_Neolithic ancestry and even Steppe ancestry is found uniformly in all of India the major difference is the frequency of South Eurasian H&G DNA which is being gradiently stronger in the South compared to the North. I feel short shrift was given to eastern India - provenance of shouldered hand axes can be traced from Khmer areas in SE Asia through NE India, Jharkhand- Orissa tribal and megalithic cultures to further south. The rice cultures should be studied better maybe. Maybe we should look East and consult SE Asian paleontologists and geneticists for such materials.

You are correct. Rice is native to Southeast Asia. Trades between Khmer Kingdoms and South Asian Kingdoms can confirm this. Because it is imported from Khmer Kingdoms.
